Not that surprising. I heard a pastor once say science cannot explain rainbows, and that same pastor also once said volcanoes are scientific proof that Hell is real because it proves hellfire coming out of the center of the earth (a lot of evangelical Christians believe Hell is actually physically located in the center of the earth). He also would routinely argue that the Bible says God will kill people who don't give money to the church. Pastors can be genuinely unhinged.

[-] CatDogL0ver@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago

The pastor isn't all wrong. Some people, such as me, found breasts terrifying

[-] im_me_but_better 3 points 2 hours ago

Interestingly enough, it may be women themselves due to societal expectations.

It is legal in Canada. One day me, my partner and a friend (very feminist friend) were at the park in a nice spring sunny day. I removed my T-shirt and laid on the grass. She said something like "I think is should to". I said " go ahead, why don't you?" and she said something about feeling uncomfortable because no one else was doing it.

(It wasn't shyness with us. I had already seen her naked)

[-] prex@aussie.zone 3 points 2 hours ago

I miss Kenm.

[-] BreadOven@lemmy.world 5 points 7 hours ago

Totally legal in Canada (at least most of it I think). No one ever does it though. Or at least rarely.

[-] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 8 hours ago

Funniest thing I've read this morning. The horses were really unexpected.

Because republicans exist

[-] KingPorkChop@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 day ago

The nipples spook the horses and the horses spook the bears who have arrived to attack women because of their menstrual cycle.

It's one of natures wonderful circles.

Now I've become really curious in which English-speaking countries going topless is illegal.

[-] sem 10 points 23 hours ago

USA for one although it varies by state.

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 47 points 1 day ago

Wait, women wear tops so they don't scare horses?

Great news, Ladies! There's no horses around anymore! You can set those boobies FREE!

[-] 5wim@slrpnk.net 112 points 1 day ago

One of nature's most venerable predators, the horse

After seeing this comment, my autistic discomfort with direct eye-contact now feels justified.

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 day ago

Not to ruin your day, but avoiding eye contact doesn't make predators not want to eat you. Also, humans are evolved with forward facing eyes, so we look at stuff to see them. I don't think this fact has anything to do with people who are uncomfortable with eye contact.

[-] Simulation6@sopuli.xyz 3 points 15 hours ago

Tigers are less likely to attack you if there is eye contact. It is why, many times, people in tiger country wear hats with eyes on the back. Only one I can think of.

[-] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 13 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

Huh? I'm referring to the idea that being face-to-face (ie, making straight eye contact) with a predator would naturally make someone feel tense. Ergo, it could make sense for eye contact to cause discomfort. Who said anything about making predators not wanting to eat someone?

[-] TheDoozer@lemmy.world 9 points 23 hours ago

"Being stared at by a predator makes me uncomfortable."

"But it's your own species. You're a predator."

"That also makes me uncomfortable."

[-] GreyEyedGhost@lemmy.ca 5 points 20 hours ago

Most predators take direct eye contact as an act of aggression. When dogs are submissive, they lower their heads, or expose their neck or belly. Prey don't like eye contact with predators because predators tend to look at what they are going to attack. Some cultures take direct eye contact as a sign of disrespect, others take avoiding eye contact as a sign of guilt or ill intent. As always, people are weird.

It's a better reason than the truth so I'll take it.

[-] davidagain@lemmy.world 41 points 1 day ago

Well, it wasn't in r/NoStupidAnswers, I suppose.

[-] Gladaed@feddit.org 47 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Weird. Are there men with large areolas? Also why does nipple radius vary between the sexes. Is there an advantage for woman or is it just randomly different.

[-] djsoren19 2 points 8 hours ago

Yeah I personally have areolas large enough that others have commented on them, including an ex that referred to them as "big pepperonis." idk enough about the genetics to answer your second question.

[-] hildegarde 57 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

estrogen causes breast development, when the breasts develop and grow, it usually grows the areolas as part of the process.

Most men never get high enough estrogen levels to drive breast development, so they live their entire lives with tiny undeveloped prepubescent breasts, with small areolas.

There are variations between people, but the difference in development during puberty is much greater.

Also some men get higher levels of estrogen temporarily during puberty, or other times due to an endocrine disorder, which causes the start of breast development which can cauae larger areolas than they would otherwise have.

[-] buffing_lecturer@leminal.space 36 points 1 day ago

they live their entire lives with tiny undeveloped prepubescent breasts

I want to point this out to a cis man and see what happens

[-] Bluewing@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago

Meh, as a cis man, I don't care about my undeveloped prepubescent breasts. I don't think men are particularly concerned about them because we have no use for them. It's just another weird guy thing I suppose.

[-] buffing_lecturer@leminal.space 27 points 1 day ago

I am a cis man too, and I agree. I just thought that particular way of phrasing might confuse some particularly fragile man egos.

"My breasts are not underdeveloped. I have some of the best man tits out of all my friends. I am a BIG STRONG MANLY man, I am NOT tiny OR underdeveloped."

[-] lemmyknow@lemmy.today 12 points 1 day ago

Mr. buffing_lecturer, your ideas for confusing some particularly fragile man egos are so innovative and you definitely do not have tiny underdeveloped prepubescent breasts. Please accept this gold on behalf of a kind stranger.

I've seen photos of men with large areolas. It's disturbing.

[-] festnt@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 day ago

now i'm curious, thanks

also, are you a horse? and if not, are you sure?

[-] WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world 26 points 1 day ago

Probably breast feeding or something? I'm not gonna die and have my wife find that in my search history. And for the public record her areolas are just fine.

[-] Trainguyrom@reddthat.com 2 points 7 hours ago

So babies are actually wired to look for the areolas for feeding, it's part of why during pregnancy the areolas grow and darken, it makes them really easy for the baby to spot with their still developing eyes so they know where to aim for before crashing their face in to feed (it's really funny when they miss btw)

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 29 points 1 day ago

for the public record her areolas are just fine.

That's a relief! We were all getting worried for a second there!

[-] Cataphract@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 day ago

Can we really just trust some anonymous single-source online? For the sake of integrity in journalism we might need to do better.

[-] WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Fine I'll show you

O

Edit - here's the other one

O

[-] festnt@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago

[-] festnt@sh.itjust.works 4 points 13 hours ago

ooh nice so she has nipples. good to know

[-] WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world 4 points 10 hours ago

Yeah but now there's nudes of my wife floating around on the Internet. I should've searched the breast feeding thing.

[-] festnt@sh.itjust.works 3 points 9 hours ago

yeah that is true. it would've been less revealing

[-] Cevilia 11 points 1 day ago

Most trans men come with them stock. Some keep them, some don't.

  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.

  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
