NodeBB 4.1.0 (community.nodebb.org)

We just released version 4.1.0 of NodeBB. Here are the latest features you can now take advantage of!

As an aside, for the first time in a long while, both @baris and I are working on the same codebase again. Up until version 4 was released, I'd been working on the activitypub branch and periodically merging in the latest changes from develop. It's nice to be home! :house_with_garden:

Improved federation of Group actors :left_speech_bubble:

We've improved the activity synchronization for followed group actors. Local updates/likes/etc. are now federated outward by the category in addition to those from remote users. Thanks to @rimu@piefed.social and @freamon who worked with me on debugging this one.

Mentions and Emoji now federating out in source.content

Emoji and mentions have been sent out to followers since v4, but that wasn't reflected in the raw markdown content that we also send along. That has been remediated now, and this change improves nodebb-to-nodebb federation.

Video object type now parseable :tv:

NodeBB is now able to ingest Peertube Video objects, and render then in a topic just like other pieces of content.

[A]lso after Charlie Kirk’s death, the Heritage Foundation twisted data to claim that “50% of all major (non-gang-related) school shootings since 2015 have involved or likely involved transgender ideology.” That was in an effort to get the FBI to create a new domestic terror threat category for “Transgender Ideology-Inspired Extremism.”

How much longer until they decide to just round up the transgender people with the ~~Gestapo~~ ICE? It's getting scary for transgender people.

The commander of the arm of the U.S. military responsible for Donald Trump's illegal military occupations of American cities said he is willing to conduct attacks on so-called designated terrorist organizations within the U.S.

This startling admission comes after months of extrajudicial killings of alleged members or affiliates of DTOs in the waters near Venezuela, which experts and lawmakers say are outright murders.

Gen. Gregory Guillot’s sopenness about the potential for unprecedented military action within U.S. borders comes as the White House, Pentagon, and Justice Department continue to refuse to rule out summary executions of Americans on Trump's secret enemies list, after weeks of requests for clarifications from The Intercept.

I shared a version of this guide earlier this year, but felt a website was needed to unpack the different options fully. So after an unreasonable number of hours, I put together the necessary data and website.

I hope this is digestible enough for the average person to help those looking to take that first step, or for people who are equally passionate and want to get their friends or family involved.

Details:

Every time I post these guides, there is always feedback on things that can improve, or I got wrong. Please do share, as it is the best way for these to evolve!

The Network of Intellectuals and Artists in Defense of Humanity issued a statement on Tuesday, December 16, rejecting what it calls a “blatant threat of a total oil blockade against Venezuela.”

A new declaration by Donald Trump, ordering “a total and complete blockade against all oil tankers entering or leaving Venezuela,” demonstrates that the world is facing a criminal and unscrupulous state logic on the part of the Donald Trump administration, the statement reads.

RELATED:

Venezuela Condemns Trump’s Threat of Military and Naval Blockade

Far from being dismissed as mere delusion, it is clear that imperialism, in its thirst for resources, seeks to wield power without limits or regard for international law, diplomacy, or the sovereignty of other nations. This is an arbitrary imposition that no longer even attempts to disguise its actions as piracy, the document adds.

With blatant disregard for humanity and the norms of international coexistence, these actions unambiguously reveal the intention to plunder Venezuelan oil, even going so far as to refer to it in the declaration as “THEIR” oil and offering the absurd and false excuse of “recovering” it. This discourse, the text states, not only exposes imperial voracity but also reveals the danger of a leadership that attempts to justify dispossession with implausible arguments.

The Network of Intellectuals, Artists, and Social Movements in Defense of Humanity maintains its firm stance in denouncing these actions before the international community. These actions will ultimately unleash an armed conflict in the region, and, as with every warmongering incursion by imperialism, will leave behind a scenario that will prove uncontrollable, with disastrous consequences for the entire planet.

An urgent call from the free peoples of the world is needed to demand, without delay, the neutralization of this common enemy of peace and justice. Our efforts today must result in an end to the impunity with which the United States has operated for the past 150 years, the intellectuals declared.

Likewise, the statement added, we send a message of solidarity to President Nicolás Maduro and the Venezuelan people. Rest assured of our unwavering support and our recognition of the courage and determination with which you defend all of humanity from the most savage empire in history.

Elon Musk is expected to back the GOP in next year's midterms with a financial package that could give the Republican Party a "huge boost."

Insiders speaking to Axios claim the Tesla CEO could offer his support to Donald Trump and the Republican Party at the 2026 election, despite previously saying he would create a third party. Musk had enjoyed a close relationship with the Trump administration at the start of this year, though it soon soured. The president and Musk were spotted dining together alongside Cristiano Ronaldo recently, and it appears their relationship has been mended, Axios reported.

It appears the dinner did wonders for how Musk feels about the GOP and Trump, with insiders suggesting the money donated to the party's election efforts could be a massive aid.

Mozilla is in a tricky position. It contains both a nonprofit organization dedicated to making the internet a better place for everyone, and a for-profit arm dedicated to, you know, making money. In the best of times, these things feed each other: The company makes great products that advance its goals for the web, and the nonprofit gets to both advocate for a better web and show people what it looks like. But these are not the best of times. Mozilla has spent the last couple of years implementing layoffs and restructuring, attempting to explain how it can fight for privacy and openness when Google pays most of its bills, while trying to find its place in an increasingly frothy AI landscape.

Fun times to be the new Mozilla CEO, right? But when I put all that to Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, the company’s just-announced chief executive, he swears he sees opportunity in all the upheaval. “I think what’s actually needed now is a technology company that people can trust,” Enzor-DeMeo says. “What I’ve seen with AI is an erosion of trust.”

Mozilla is not going to train its own giant LLM anytime soon. But there’s still an AI Mode coming to Firefox next year, which Enzor-DeMeo says will offer users their choice of model and product, all in a browser they can understand and from a company they can trust. “We’re not incentivized to push one model or the other,” he says. “So we’re going to try to go to market with multiple models.”

For context, I (23M) live in the United States. In Ohio. A bit concerned about privacy because of the whole Nazi problem and the fact that I live in an abusive household.

I've been working on myself a lot recently and realized that I can't do this alone anymore (or rely on Internet strangers to talk about my issues). I feel like I finally have the strength to ask for help in the real world. I've just never done this before. What's it like? Is it warm and fuzzy, or cold and analytical? (Does it feel like someone is providing care and comfort, or is it more like an emotionally detached scientist meticulously studying you and scribbling down notes while mumbling "Hmm, I see, I see" while you yap at them?) Do you start to see results right away, or are things slow at first? How much stuff is recorded in a database that other systems can look up?

I'm liking the recent posts about switching to Linux. Some of my home machines run Linux, and I ran it on my main laptop for years (currently on Win10, preparing to return to Linux again).

That's all fine and dandy but at work I am forced to use Windows, Office, Teams, and all that. Not just because of corpo policies but also because of the apps we need to use.

Even if it weren't for those applications, or those policies, or if Wine was a serious option, I would still need to work with hundreds of other people in a Windows world, live-sharing Excel and so on.

I'm guessing that most people here just accept it. We use what we want at home, and use what the bossman wants at work. Or we're lucky to work in a shop that allows Linux. Right?

It’s official: House Speaker Mike Johnson says he won’t call a vote to extend enhanced subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, effectively guaranteeing they will expire at the end of this month.

That means higher insurance premiums will go into effect for millions of Americans who get coverage through Obamacare next year.

The speaker made the announcement Tuesday after a closed-door Republican caucus meeting, saying that leadership failed to reach a deal with centrist members to bring up an ACA amendment on a health care bill set for a vote on Wednesday.

Participants were measurably happier and less anxious.

But disappointingly, not by a huge margin:

Perhaps this is due to the fact a significant number of users switched to less harmful online platforms and didn't stop using their phones.

Or perhaps there is actually something more sinister. My real concern with this study is the involvement of Meta.

We actually have evidence that Meta halted internal research about social media:

https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/boards-policy-regulation/meta-buried-causal-evidence-social-media-harm-us-court-filings-allege-2025-11-23/

Would you study tobacco and have tobacco companies involved?

Would you study obesity and have Coca-Cola involved?

I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but could Meta actually bully/bribe Stanford in order to change the figures?

Meeting about the new office building. Construction starting two years from now. What is my opinion on an open office? Can't say i give a fuck what's happening in two years, can't envision that being relevant to me at all.

Community Guidelines

Blåhaj Lemmy is a space where everyone should feel able to participate safely, and to that end, our community is built on the guiding philosophies of empathy, inclusion and acceptance.

Empathy

We want our community members to be guided by compassion and empathy for others.

Examples of behaviour that are contrary to this philosophy are personal attacks, insults, doxing etc. If your comment is designed to hurt someone, this isn't the space for it.

Inclusion and Acceptance

Embracing inclusion and acceptance means listening when people tell you who they are and what their needs are. It means not telling people that you know their experiences better than they do. It means not gatekeeping experiences of identities of others. It means no bigotry such as racism, sexism, anti LGBT commentary, ableism etc. It means doing your best to ensure that you don't over-talk the voices of folk who don't share your privileges.

Supporting Blåhaj Lemmy

After much hesitation, we have a Ko Fi to enable people to help with supporting some of the running costs associated with our instances.

Providing a safe space for our community is the goal, so please only consider donating if you are in a position to do so without any financial stress.
