It's 2026 and Android MTP is about as stable as the US economy was in 2008 and Apple MTP is literally just a turd wearing a trench coat with the apple logo slapped on.

God forbid I want to transfer a file over a USB cable at USB cable speeds like a normal adult.

Immich is a bit of a heavyweight solution, but it’s what I ended up using.

[-] angband@lemmy.world 5 points 17 hours ago

How do I get my photos off my phone, automatically and without feeding the cloud.

It's basically Google Photos but you host it yourself.

[-] cheers_queers@lemmy.zip 20 points 1 day ago

as a millenial, i avoid the cloud whenever possible

[-] Rhaedas@fedia.io 13 points 1 day ago

As a Gen-X, you're damn right. Remember, the cloud just means someone else's computer. On some occasions that's okay, like a secure backup that's encrypted. The rest, only put what you 1) don't mind everyone seeing, and 2) don't care if you lose.

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 day ago

On both counts:

[-] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 1 points 19 hours ago

I don't get the whole "flood" angle but I liked the comic.

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 18 hours ago

Just my go-to expression for "really fucking old" 😁

Cloud: a hard drive in a rack in some country somewhere.

[-] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 2 points 18 hours ago

Hard drive - foreign rack (18)

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago

NAS: Cloud, but better (amongst other things)

[-] ICastFist@programming.dev 1 points 20 hours ago

So, a hard drive in a rack in a better country?

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 19 hours ago

That and much more!

Now, if only I could convince Jellyfin of the fact that its preferred ports are available, being properly forwarded and not reserved for anything else..

The cloud is a tool to charge you money to do simple tasks you could already do like move photos from a phone to a computer.

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

I thought it was a riddle that I didn't understand. But I also thought "photos" said "potatos" until I zoomed in.

So. Riddle. How do you move your potatos from your phone to your PC?

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 day ago

Very carefully.

[-] CrazyLikeGollum@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Well, you see the first step is to boil the potatoes. It softens the starches and makes the next step easier.

The second step is to mash roughly one half of the potatoes and set them aside.

For the third step, you will cut the remaining potatoes into roughly one inch (2.5cm) cubes. After that you will, and this is critical, stick them in a stew.

Let the stew simmer until the onions dissolve and the carrots soften.

Now you can serve the stew over the mashed potatoes and then smuggle them out of the phone in your stomache.

[-] WesternInfidels@feddit.online 2 points 1 day ago

Do not try and move the potatoes. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth:

There are no potatoes.

[-] CapuccinoCoretto@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago

Cries in Latvian.

[-] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Trick question, in this economy my phone and my PC are my potatoes

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I'm imagining it like a scene from Aqua Teen Hunger Force. You're meatwad. Playing with potatos, and imaging they're expensive electronics. But it's just potatoes with magic marker drawn on them to look like a cell phone, and a PC.

[-] Rhaedas@fedia.io 0 points 1 day ago

~~Plans~~ Potatoes within ~~plans~~ potatoes.

[-] olafurp@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago
[-] Lumisal@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

That is way too unreliable to recommend.

At least based on my anecdote of trying it throughout the years across 4 phones and 5 machines, only having success on 1 phone and a laptop specifically.

[-] notthebees@reddthat.com 1 points 11 hours ago

It's worked on my computer and phone. Mind you I'm on iOS and windows. It works outside of the windows specific limitations.

[-] BlindPenguin@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I'm positively surprised by it ever since i started using openSuse. They seem to do something different, since i didn't have any connection problems with it.

[-] Natanox@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 day ago

They most likely set up the firewall correctly.

[-] pelya@lemmy.world 1 points 21 hours ago

killall kdeconnectd ; kdeconnect-cli -l

Fixes connection problems instantly. Yeah, I've put that into my crontab.

[-] olafurp@lemmy.world 1 points 23 hours ago

I only tried it on 2 phones, work both times both ways.

[-] prole 1 points 19 hours ago

Seems good, I just wish they'd let you fucking remove it if you don't want to use it. Of all of the apps to stop the end user from removing, the one that's made specifically to communicate with outside devices...

I don't like that.

[-] dafta 1 points 18 hours ago

What? Where do you see it preinstalled that you can't remove it? It's an open source app, I don't see why a vendor would install it and keep you from removing it.

[-] prole 1 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

It's part of KDE Plasma and you cannot remove it completely. In my experience. You can kind of disable it in some ways. And block it in your firewall or whatever, but it's part of the DE from what I understand.

Maybe it's just the distros I've chosen.

Edit: well I've been on immutable for a handful of years now so maybe it's on me. But I do remember it being annoying to remove on EndeavourOS as well but that was several years ago so maybe it's better now

[-] dafta 1 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

I suppose that's an issue in how your distro packages it and makes it a required dependency. It's absolutely not a required dependency of KDE Plasma and it's optional. On Arch for instance it's not even marked as optional and I can just do pacman -Rns kdeconnect and remove it freely.

[-] prole 1 points 17 hours ago

I swear that didn't work like ~5 years ago on EndeavourOS, but there's a solid chance I'm just misremembering.

[-] Rooster326@programming.dev 1 points 19 hours ago

Hey that's not a riddle

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 23 hours ago

Possibly 🀷🏻

You never know what our feline overlords get up to, especially in a comic set in a place that used to (more officially) revere them as divine πŸ˜‰

[-] Ertain@feddit.online 4 points 1 day ago

Li Chen's comics are the best.

[-] cally@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago

I use a USB cable or pairdrop.net

[-] frog@feddit.uk 2 points 1 day ago

Freakin' Bronzoomers. They don't know anything about tech.

[-] BenLeMan@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Just wait until you find out that the photo in question is of their screen.

Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. πŸ˜‡ Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. πŸ“½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. πŸ“‹ Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      βœ… Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. πŸ“¬ Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 πŸ–) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 πŸ–) will be removed.
  7. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      SΓ, por favor [Spanish/EspaΓ±ol]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss
  3. GPrime85

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)
