Context

TL;DR This is a pledge to defederate from lemmy.world if they end up defederating from any of the instances in the Fediverse Anarchist Flotilla (FAF), which consists of https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/, https://anarchist.nexus/, and https://quokk.au/. Just want to see if the admins are aware of this situation, and see what others think.

We're aware of it, but at this point, we're not planning on it.

The lens through which I view decisions like this is the health of the trans and gender diverse community on the threadiverse. Each time, basically, the process is answering the question "Would banning this user or defederating this instances strengthen the gender diverse community on the threadiverse or weaken it?" In the case of instances full of transphobes that take no action on transphobia, that's an easy question.

But in the case of lemmy.world? There are a LOT of gender diverse users on lemmy.world, and the admins are responsive whenever I reach out to them about transphobes on their instance. Defederating them would notably splinter and diminish the community, and I'm not sure the gains are worth that.

If there is a strong community desire that it happen, then we're open to it, but otherwise, I feel it would just leave us with islands of isolated trans folk that can't interact with each other, more than we already have...

Edit - I will add, we have a good relationship with the FAF admins, and we share a matrix space independent of lemmy.world and the other mega instances to aid with moderating against bigotry.

Thanks for the detailed response. I'm glad that the health of the queer community is the first priority around here. :3

I'm also glad to hear that you're friendly with the FAF admins. I'd personally love to see blahaj.zone join the FAF, but I wouldn't want that to happen at the cost of alienating queer users who aren't anarchists.

Here's hoping that this whole thing blows over, and that lemmy.world becomes less tolerant of Zionism.

I’m hopping between instances to try and find a suitable space to live and everywhere I go, I see talk about .world up at the top.

Regardless of personal takes on the situation that sparked this, I do think something’s got to give to decentralize Lemmy from .world. Scrolling through all popular communities is really not too dissimilar from just scrolling the communities in the .world instance alone.

I think that defederation from .world is in order, but from what I can tell, I’m not sure if this instance should be the first domino to fall. I think it would be a good move in the long run to encourage various instances to take part in hosting diverse and vibrant communities and share the load, but I think it would be a bit lonely and confusing at first.

To address the concern about “will this be to the detriment of queer folk?” to be honest I think the solution lies not just in whether we federate with .world or not, but instead with increasing the visibility and accessibility of the fediverse as a whole. Right now, there is not a lot of easy to find or digest documentation about how this whole world works. If we equip the queer community with the resources to embrace and be embraced by this technology, THAT is how we support it.

I'm all for divesting in .world. They have way too much power and weight to throw around.

But we risk creating echo chambers if we lock all the doors that lead to differing opinions.

Blåhaj defederating an instance that hasn't really threatened the queer community takes away user agency, in my opinion. Use the block function liberally and you can quickly filter out the biggest trolls/spammers and their comms.

I'd be happy for the Haj to join the Flotilla, but I trust the admins to steer us to safe shallows even if we don't.

I support defederating from the Zionist lemmy.world. Certainly in solidarity with the FAF, if/when that day comes, but also generally.

I dont think my opinions on the matter are so important as to push for it against the will of this server though. As Ada said, the goals of LBZ are different from those of the FAF. I trust and support Ada's decision making, as she's only ever given me reason to do so.

I mean, it won't really change much for myself, I blocked the instance over a year ago. I'd certainly appreciate it if we defederated, I don't believe the instance generates any content of value and is too similar to the worst parts of Reddit, but I think it's fine if the decision is ultimately left to user preference.

Doesn't federating with dbzer0 already come with a lot of problems? Or am I thinking of a different instance?

[-] cobalt32 6 points 4 days ago

You might be thinking of a different instance. I'm not aware of any problems with dbzer0, and their admins have a good relationship with our admins.

Isn't blahaj already defederated from lemmy.world over the ease of account creation and failures in moderation?

No, lemmy.world is federated and works fine. I recall hearing something like that a while ago, but it was a temporary measure during an update to the server software. Its up and working, and been federated for a long time.
