I'd bet your host PC's firewall is blocking the connections from other devices on your network. Otherwise, you're sure you're pointing them at the host IP:port correctly?

Are you running it in docker?

This may be the most accurate usage of this character ever.

Google disabled call recording for everyone a few years back because it's illegal in some places. Even in states where it is legal, most of the call recorder apps dont work without root privileges anymore.

Three phase circuits when perfectly balanced actually have no current on the N wire, which is kindof the exception to my "N wires are current carrying conductors" above, but very few scenarios in real life actually have perfectly balanced three phase loads. That's kindof the opposite of what you were saying, but memory can be weird like that sometimes.

It's also relatively common to use a white wire as your third hot for three phase circuits that dont have or need a N at all. The white wire isnt actually N in that case, but a layman with cursory knowledge of electrical work would look at the white wire with voltage to ground and say the N is hot. By the code you're supposed to mark the white wire with colored tape in this scenario to indicate that it's hot and not N.

Different circumstances are different. Neturals are current carrying conductors. Neutrals are also grounded (as in bonded to ground at the main panel). In the case of someone wiring a recepticle or making joints in a junction box without turning off the circuit, one side of the neutral will almost certainly become disconnected from its return path in that process. When doing electrical work you absolutely do not consider the N wire safe for this reason.

Sure, if you touch the N lug in a hot panel or the N side of a receptacle while everything's properly wired you won't get shocked, but nobody has any reason to touch the N conductor if you aren't working working on the circuit/box/panel. I'll admit my use of "generally" above isnt exactly appropriate when you consider that a home doesnt "generally" have someone working on the wiring. Similarly my "incorrect" at the comment above me is less than 100% accurate, but I maintain that in the case of actual electrical work being done (the only time this conversation matters) you can never consider N to be safe.

All circuits are hot. All guns are loaded. All knives are sharp.

The Cuban government has announced that Assata Shakur died in Havana on Thursday at the age of 78. Shakur was a legendary figure within the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army.

Shakur was convicted in the May 2, 1973, killing of a New Jersey state trooper during a shootout that left one of her fellow activists dead. She was shot twice by police during the incident. In 1979, she managed to escape from jail and later fled to Cuba, where she received political asylum. She long proclaimed her innocence.

In her autobiography, Shakur wrote: “It is our duty to fight for our freedom. It is our duty to win. We must love each other and support each other. We have nothing to lose but our chains.”

Keshaun Pearson wrote this excellent piece about Musk's fuckery in Memphis. There isnt much new here to people that have kept up with the issue, but he does a good job of putting things in the wider context of class and racial stuggle inside and outside of Memphis. He's directly involved in the community response, and it's refreshing to see an article that doesnt dance around the wider implications for climate and social justice.

My partner and I have a trip planned in about 1.5 weeks, bur cat is unfortunately sickly right now. I'm tasked with setting up a couple of webcams in her favorite spots so we can check on her while we're away.

Currently we have 1 basic webcam, two functioning Linux desktops, a couple old hard drives i don't need, a domain name I have grand plans for but have never used, and enough experience with docker and self hosting to be dangerous.

If you were to set up a quick and dirty pet cam with a minimal budget and about a week to buy everything and get it all set up, how would you go about it? I really want a solution requires as little fiddling and config as possible.

I know I'll need at least one more webcam, and I've been researching NVR software all night only to arrive back at idk-what-I'm-doing after hours of reading. I could potentially stretch my budget up to something like a Qnap TS-216G (which is as close to a good solution as I've found) since I've been wanting to buy a NAS anyways. The QVR software suite seems like a nice solution for easy setup, but I really dont need any advanced AI features. Even basic stuff like motion detection and video storage I could do without, although they would be nice to have.

I've never made any services available from outside of my LAN either. From what I've read in the past, Tailscale may be the simplest solution for that, but idk if it's suitable for this type of application.

Edit: I guess I never should have brought up that our cat is sick. Most of y'all seem to think that I'm neglecting my animal or something because I didnt go into detail about all of the care plans that we have in place for her. Her illness is long term and managed by medications. She doesnt have flare-ups or any acute symptoms that are likely to cause an emergency. We have friends that she likes that will be visiting daily to feed and water her, spend time with her, and give her medicine. This camera solution is really just a little something extra to make my partner and I feel better about being away from her.

I strongly disagree with this decision and the reasoning behind it. Blahaj is, in my opinion, the best place for this community specifically because of the strong moderation and policies of Ada and other admins here.

Lemmy.world is also the worst instance I can think of outside of the big three tankie instances. It contributes further to the centralization of Lemmy as a whole (since 196 has been one of the most active communities on the entire platform). In my opinion, the .world crowd's liberal and pro-colonialist/capitalist tendencies are a terrible fit for this community.

I'd have rather seen Blahaj defederate from .world than 196 move there, even if it meant less content and engagement. At least the cultural values of the community wouldn't have been compromised.

Thats my friend! He's really like that all the time and is genuinely compassionate and wholesome in every aspect of his life.

He volunteers on a local community radio show each week called The Pedestrian Show where he advocates for better biking infrastructure in the city. He's like actually involved in city council meetings and breaks down the proposed development plans on the radio in simple terms so people can understand what's happening in the city without reading 50 pages of legalese.

Also, he's really good at ping pong haha.

AARON BUSHNELL 1999-2024

"I will be no longer complicit in genocide. I am about to engage in an extreme act of protest, but compared to what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonizers, it is not extreme at all. This is what our ruling class has decided will be normal. Free Palestine. Free Palestine. Free Palestine."

I always get emotional when I think of Aaron Bushnell. He reminds me of so many of my radical brothers and sisters unable to live with the injustices so many accept as normal.

PS. I tried out the new alt text feature on Jerboa. Let me know if it has any issues!

Voting is Not Harm Reduction An Indigenous Perspective February 2020 – www.indigenousaction.org

Zine format printable PDF download: Voting is Not Harm Reduction Zine-FINAL-PRINT (9.8MB)

"When proclamations are made that “voting is harm reduction,” it’s never clear how less harm is actually calculated. Do we compare how many millions of undocumented Indigenous Peoples have been deported? Do we add up what political party conducted more drone strikes? Or who had the highest military budget? Do we factor in pipelines, mines, dams, sacred sites desecration? Do we balance incarceration rates? Do we compare sexual violence statistics? Is it in the massive budgets of politicians who spend hundreds of millions of dollars competing for votes?

Though there are some political distinctions between the two prominent parties in the so-called U.S., they all pledge their allegiance to the same flag. Red or blue, they’re both still stripes on a rag waving over stolen lands that comprise a country built by stolen lives.

We don’t dismiss the reality that, on the scale of U.S. settler colonial violence, even the slightest degree of harm can mean life or death for those most vulnerable. What we assert here is that the entire notion of “voting as harm reduction” obscures and perpetuates settler-colonial violence, there is nothing “less harmful” about it, and there are more effective ways to intervene in its violences."
