The second Mario Movie lost me when it played Thunderstruck while Donkey Kong and Mario were fighting.

I loves me some Akka Dakka, but there’s such a deep musical well to draw from with all the Mario games that it made it feel even more like an unscrupulous cash grab.

[-] zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com 24 points 2 months ago

I've never seen anyone say "Akka Dakka" before and clearly I was missing out. Also, agreed on all points.

[-] Ebber@lemmings.world 14 points 2 months ago

An Aussie guy told me once that's what they call it, at least some of them

[-] pryre@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

It's true, that's how it's said down here! Usually by fans more so than just generally.

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

I learned it from DankPods

[-] Chozo@fedia.io 13 points 2 months ago

I'm pretty sure that Jack Black contractually requires that all projects he works on have to include at least one AC/DC song.

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

Fuck Jaybles

Rage Kage 5 EVAR

[-] ParlimentOfDoom@piefed.zip 4 points 2 months ago

And at least one jack black song.

[-] prole 3 points 2 months ago

Yeah I didn't make it very far into that movie. Everything about it felt wrong. Crazy that it was so well received, even by video game fans.

I always said the Mario movie I got as an adult was the one I wanted as a kid, and the one I got as a kid was the one I wanted as an adult

[-] TwodogsFighting@lemdro.id 28 points 2 months ago

One of these films has 'Walk the dinosaur', The other does not.

[-] mr_account@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

One of these films has the 2 towers get destroyed, and the other did not

[-] bleistift2@sopuli.xyz 22 points 2 months ago

I think the new one is funnily written. Sorry for being a pleb.

[-] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 18 points 2 months ago

To be fair the majority of modern movies are just cameos and references. So while it might have sucked (don't know haven't seen it and don't intend to) it's probably on par with the modern craptacular that is cinema.

That said I have always loved the OG Mario movie because its just Fun. Outside of that one movie I never cared for anything related to Nintendo, thats how great I think that one stupid movie is.

[-] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago

Because all the good shit has already been written!

More that capitalism doesn't have a single original thought unless it's a new way to enshittify something.

Sure, plenty of new things that are great are being made, but the good stuff is nigh always without marketability or projected income in mind.

[-] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

It sure seems that way but I would argue that A24 films is doing a pretty good job of making original entertaining media.

[-] fritobugger2017@lemmy.world 14 points 2 months ago

The OG was fantastic! Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, and Dennis Hopper! The Goombas! The elevator scene!

[-] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 5 points 2 months ago

Everyone was drunk or on something during the filming!

John leguizamo has openly shared how awful the film shooting was and wanted it over.

[-] fritobugger2017@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

I've heard similar tales. 1993 was essentially still the 80s in a lot of places. Free flow of cocaine and booze.

[-] Hupf@feddit.org 3 points 2 months ago

Goomba! :O :D

[-] Speiser0@feddit.org 11 points 2 months ago

The old one had references as well. And it was nice that it was different. It made it fun to think about what all the things were meant to represent. And also, it was a bit like the games were just an abstraction of reality, with things made easy to understand and kid-friendly.

[-] CCMan1701A@startrek.website 10 points 2 months ago

The new one works great for a wider audience. The OG is pretty funny and I definitely enjoy a lot of the dialogue.

[-] peteypete420@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 months ago

Well, one was based off the video game, one loosely referenced.

Niether was a great movie, but kid me enjoyed the John Legluigi performance alot. Guess it depends on what ya like.

[-] LurkingLuddite@piefed.social 5 points 2 months ago

I loved is as a kid and still thoroughly appreciate it as an adult. Not sure the new one will stand the test of time. Though maybe one day when people are simply amazed that computers were ubiquitous and powerful enough to do such things, it will gain its own unique novelty...

[-] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 7 points 2 months ago

I did not watch either. I might watch the old one though.

[-] FatVegan@leminal.space 13 points 2 months ago

I liked it as a kid. I still like it as an adult. It's a complete mess though. They changed dialogues on the fly, people were often drunk as fuck while filming, it's hardly even a mario movie. Maybe that's what makes it great, idk.

[-] Rozauhtuno 2 points 2 months ago

people were often drunk as fuck while filming

The Do the Mario dance lives in my head rent-free.

[-] mghackerlady@leminal.space 3 points 2 months ago

That's from a different thing iirc (the super mario bros super show)

[-] banazir@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

It warms my heart to see the cyberpunk film get some love. It's an entertaining film. I even have the book version of that one!

Check the Morton Jankel Cut.

[-] lime@feddit.nu 2 points 2 months ago

oof, that's rough. i take it this is found footage of removed cuts that have been spliced back in? the jumps in quality are real jarring.

[-] banazir@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 months ago

Yeah, it's a patchwork of sources.

[-] mghackerlady@leminal.space 4 points 2 months ago

The old one is undoubtedly a better movie, but the new one is undoubtedly a much better mario movie

[-] lime@feddit.nu 2 points 2 months ago

see also, the hbomberguy read of the first sonic game

[-] InvalidName2@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 months ago

Haven't watched the "new" one. Having said that, it's an unfair comparison even if it seems like an obvious comparison to pretty much everybody 5 and older who is aware of "Mario Brothers".

[-] AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Hold up, let 'em cook

[-] skrlet13@feddit.cl 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Edit: I talked about the new Mario Galaxy XD

Its story is mediocre and Yoshi was like a Illumination Minion, but liked the references and the family interactions. Mario and Luigi are fun and supportive brothers to each other.
