I used to have a job adjacent to the gaming industry, I went in a number of gaming stores to try to find partners for the products we were selling.

I could talk at length how sad and strange gaming stores are, but I just wanted to share one incident where I was in Phoenix in August and entered a small shop in a business plaza that looked relatively clean and new on the outside.

On opening the door I was hit with the worst BO wave that has ever crashed over me, and having been in gaming stores before, this says a lot. There were some young guys sitting at tables surrounded by backpacks, which I can only assume were full of fermented roadkill, and playing various games, looking up curiously as I tried my best to smile and nod a greeting. My eyes watered and I left immediately because I felt like I was going to vomit.

I checked up on the store 6 months later and it had closed doors pretty fast. I can't imagine why they wouldn't get business.

The memes and jokes are not an exaggeration. Gamer boys are TERRIBLE at self-care and hygiene. I don't know why it's so hard to reinforce the concept to people that just because you can't smell yourself, it doesn't mean you don't smell, you NEED to shower, change clothes, all of them, including and especially socks and underwear, and you need to clean your fucking rooms, your rooms are stink nests and that smell seeps into EVERYTHING.

You know how angry incels will vomit spiels online how frustrated they are that they get the advice to "just shower?" I love this common exchange because I know for a fact that probably more than half of these boys screaming online how nobody wants to touch their weewee are also completely disgusting and do nothing to maintain and manage themselves.

My theory was that it was so many teenagers traveling a long way to a big tournament who couldn't afford to just get a hotel room the night before. So they'd sleep at their friends house or whatever, and then just show up in whatever condition.

But having the problem at the local game shop kind of defeats that theory.

[-] SnortsGarlicPowder@lemmy.zip 15 points 2 weeks ago

The thing is you can smell yourself. I can smell when I stink. How can you not notice that rancid smell following you is you?

[-] Genius@lemmy.zip 12 points 2 weeks ago

That's because there's some times when you don't stink, so you've had time to learn the difference. Some people always stink, and they forget what clean smells like

[-] kossa@feddit.org 6 points 2 weeks ago

When my parents bought their house, there were hoarders renting out the lower flat. when they opened the door, it smelled awful. Kids being kids, I just flat out asked one of their kids "Why does your flat stink so much?". They told me, it does not stink ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. So you can get insensitive about stuff like that.

On another note: my wife can taste stuff I cannot taste. I can see better than other folks while my hearing is really bad. So senses work differently for different humans. So while I can smell myself as well, that does not need to hold true for others.

Went to PAX, the rest of the convention floor smelled fine. The smell at the tabletop game floor hit hard.

Raggardusch (Swedish, trans. Greaser shower): a shower taken in deodorant spray

[-] bulwark@lemmy.world 33 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

That's a pretty great description for the Axe body spray target demographic. A raged douch, if you will.

[-] sepiroth154@feddit.nl 21 points 2 weeks ago

In the Netherlands we call it a French shower, I don't know why. (But i can guess)

[-] Aganim@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

I've never heard that one before, in my circle we call it a military shower.

This is fresh in my mind because I just took my kids to a game store to buy a gift for someone who wanted Pokemon cards. Big mistake.

Unfortunately I picked the day they had a MTG tournament. We barely got inside when the wall of stench hit us. One of them noticed a guys hairy ass crack hanging out as well. They were very verbal about both and I don't blame them.

Decided to just go somewhere else because it was unbearable. The whole ride they couldn't stop talking about how it smelled like unwashed ass, BO, and sour milk.

[-] Dave2 34 points 2 weeks ago

24? who gets smelly after a day?

[-] CannonFodder@lemmy.world 55 points 2 weeks ago

Almost everyone. Especially those who don't think they do. Ah hem.

[-] halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world 47 points 2 weeks ago

Yous be surprised.

And this is clearly on a door to a card shop. Magic tournaments are infamous for individuals that have terrible hygiene.

[-] cRazi_man@europe.pub 38 points 2 weeks ago

FYI - you do not need to shower daily.

Although you can never admit this publically, as it has become the social expectation. But feel free to move to an alternate day shower routine if you haven't had a sweaty day. I guarantee no one will notice. Your skin will be less dried out. You'll save a not-insignificant-amount in water and energy and time.

Body odour comes from not showering for very many days, and more so from wearing unwashed smelly clothes.

[-] AbsolutelyClawless@piefed.social 19 points 2 weeks ago

You don't need to shower daily. You absolutely do need to wash yourself in some other way, like with a washcloth. Unless you have no BO at all, more likely than not that bacteria colony under the armpits will make you smell bad regardless of if you had a "sweaty day" or not. Plus, wearing clean clothes helps a lot.

Anecdotally, I went to a gaming convention once and that taught me to never do it again. The smell was so bad. Living the stereotype. And on a recent concert I had someone stink so bad in front of me, it ruined the experience.

Also, as a side note. The article giving an example about why someone doesn't shower being not liking having wet hair. I've heard this once. Do people not know they can just... tie their hair in a bun if it's longer or just avoid wetting it if it's short?

Oh great, more health advice from unqualified randos online.

Not everyone's bodies have the same needs and people should be cautious about blindly following whatever advice someone confidently suggests. If you want to shower less, please talk to a doctor/dermatologist first.

My sensitive skin has a maybe 36 hour limit without washing before it gets distractingly itchy. There's no way this advice could work for everyone.

Just be careful out there, people.

[-] kilgore_trout@feddit.it 9 points 2 weeks ago

There was no need to get confrontational.
If you are itchy, shower, no one forbade you. Just, it's not needed by the vast majority of people. It is but a social norm.
It is also detrimental to shower everyday with soaps.

Pretty sure you should be paying attention to the spirit of the rule, not the letter.

[-] StarvingMartist@sh.itjust.works 21 points 2 weeks ago

Everyone, trust

[-] TachyonTele@piefed.social 20 points 2 weeks ago

You do, Dave. Everyone does.

[-] Dave2 12 points 2 weeks ago

How'd you get smelly mate? Either your home's in need of a cleaning or your skin clogs easily (like the other guy said). Most folks I know usually take a shower once every 2 days or if they workout, so really shocked by how everyone's responding here.

Uh... I have the ABCC11 gene so I don't have body odour and don't wear deodorant. Can I come in?

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago

you have the ABCC11 gene so you can't smell your body odour. go shower

[-] MapleEngineer@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

No, ABCC11 means you have no body odour and dry ear wax. It's very common in Korea but far less common among Caucasians.

[-] k0e3@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 weeks ago

You don't produce the smell from your own glands, but sweating can still make you smell.

I don't know about her genes, but I once had a coworker who you could tell didn't use deodorant, but in a clean, freshly-showered way. I absolutely adored her smell when we got into a situation where she was reaching up very near me. It wasn't like the nothing or soap smell you get after a shower, but a human smell. It made me feel very content.

The card "Cleanse" was banned for being "culturally insensitive"...

IIRC, it was Yu-Gi-Oh! players that were infamous for weaponizing their smell to distract their opponents.

My local store just smells like cardboard, ink, and paint, even during the MtG tournaments.

[-] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 20 points 2 weeks ago

Usually these signs exist for that one depressed dude who no one wants to say anything directly to but desperately needs someone to tell them it's a problem.

I love the feeling of being showered, wearing deodorant, cologne, and putting on freshly washed clothes. Along with having fresh breath after brushing my teeth.

It's just so much more pleasant for everyone. Smell good, look good, feel good. It does wonders for your confidence.

[-] Serinus@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

And if you're sweating in the shower, take a colder shower.

[-] mauubunzie_Kittyroll69420 22 points 2 weeks ago

a magic the gathering store…that requires basic hygiene before coming in? that shit gonna be empty

[-] robocall@lemmy.world 16 points 2 weeks ago

The bathroom in my LGS literally has free deodorant openly available for use, and the owner reminds everyone whenever the store is really packed for an event. Unfortunately some people still do not get the hint.

[-] Dohnuthut@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago

Attend a LEGO convention every year and they always post a reminder as it gets closer to bathe and wear deodorant.

[-] fossilesque@mander.xyz 9 points 2 weeks ago

I really want to go down to one of the local spots and play, but I'm kind of terrified of what I'll find there.
