thanks for this! for me, the Tame Impala song Let It Happen, as covered by Meg Mac for Like A Version. this song reminded me that I have always been able to change if I just let go.
I'm old. When I wasn't old, Shania Twain had a period where she was on the radio a lot. Every time "Man, I feel like a woman" came on, people would wonder when I had become a Shania Twain fan
omg yes! I used to love that one too (also old).
You just have the prerogative to have a little fun with it
I guess let me choose the obvious, which is the song Reflection from Mulan. Not a "trans" song per se, but one that was definitely written conscious of gender roles and the way the movie plays with the gender presentation of its titular protagonist.
Classic :)
I only just realized that Lea Salonga sang this! Wish I was even half as good...
I find King Gizzard's most recent album, Flight b741, extremely relatable. Almost terrifyingly so. Not sure if everyone would relate to it the same way I do, but nearly every song speaks to my experience as someone finally coming out after about a decade of being in the closet.
Realizing that being cis was just a mirage. Finding the place where you truly belong. Experiencing life for the first time as yourself. Wondering how you got this far and how you're still going. Attempting to present yourself to the world and feeling happy yet also having a nagging feeling that everyone just sees you as a pig in mud. Realizing the flight ahead is a long and painful one which may lead to an early death, but you can't imagine going back and as scary as it is, you're not gonna bail out...
I just... Fucking hell. I know it's probably not supposed to be read that way, but it's way too relatable when framed like that.
Two songs by Aurora both give me so much comfort and validation, and resonate with me deeply as a trans person (and autistic person) deeply. Both have very different tones but I find them equally poignant.
And
I'm not trans myself, but Oberon by Lump always felt like it was a non-trans trans song. Apparently the lyrics are just from various jotted ideas in Laura Marling's notebook.
Don't call me by my old name
Cruel as you are to bring up old pain
I tried to play the boys' game
Yes, I'm all for change till it takes my name
It's also an incredibly beautiful song.
Just recently played thru Sonic Unleashed, honestly the entire game has trans vibes in it, but the main theme of the game, Endless Possibilities, really resonates with the trans experience imo
Wolfmother - Victorious is my number one song that fits this niche. It was my pump up song during early transition, I would belt it out in the shower every single time. Wolfmother were the first band I saw at a rock concert, they opened for AC/DC when I was 14, so they hold a special place in my heart. Tell me these lyrics don't give off trans vibes:
It seems the competition is riding on her tail
It seems that they were hoping she, hoping she would fail
The town has come to raise our guns to the sun
She will prove herself worthy
She will be the oneShe will be victorious
And won't get the battle loss
Always-a mysterious
'Cause she will be victoriousIt seems that they are plotting out, plotting out destruction
With the things that they have made around their own construction
And can't you see that we are all the masters of our destiny?
And she won't be called the victim of your faded memoryShe will be victorious
And won't get the battle loss
Always-a mysterious
'Cause she will be victoriousDon't you ever get tired and feel like giving up?
Don't you ever feel like, like you've had enough?
Don't you ever get tired of wondering what's wrong or right?
Don't you ever get tired and feel like giving up?It seems that I just thought they could take their sweet time
Sippin' cocktails in the sun, enjoying the sunshine
She can't wait to unleash, unleash all her rage
With an electric guitar and blow them off the stageShe will be victorious
And won't get the battle loss
Always-a mysterious
'Cause she will be victorious'Cause she will be victorious
