These opinion pieces are nice, but ultimately an exercise in futility. The people who need to read it are not reading lgbtqnation, or any LGBTQ+ focused blog/publication. This same article gets written and posted on some trans forward blog, why? So we can read it and go “Yeah, that’s right!”
Nothing against the author, but this is tired, to the point of being annoying.
I share the frustration but I think it's still better to keep saying it rather than just being silent.
This is why people like us need to strike up conversations with right wingers. Don't get into the weeds. Keep it philosophical. Talk about why you are actually reasonable and aren't just what fox news and news max say you are. Tell them that Trump is supporting mass surveillance, allowing propaganda and corporate brainwashing. How Trump is causing massive inflation because he is obsessed with overheating the economy to try to look good. How he attacks not only the human rights of illegal immigrants or undocumented immigrants, but trans people, gay people, and people who don't agree with him politically and votes for his opposition. Explain to them that America was great because it was free, because we innovated, because we had good ethics and freedom, and tell them that Trump is anti American, he is more like a Russian, or a middle eastern ruler, where people make $100 a month in wages because the corruption and inefficiency is always so high, since leaders can destroy the nations over and over before they are removed from power by force. Tell them that any other democratic leader in history would step down if they were hated as much as Trump by his own people, but trump is so selfish that he'd rather watch the country burn than to step down.
That sure does sound nice, in a vacuum.
Who ever received the rights and protections they deserved, by asking nicely?
I demand that I be treated equally to everyone else. Fuck trying to win people over. We are so far beyond that.
Let’s keep the philosophy in the hypotheticals that it lives in.
There is a time and place for that. It's better to be nice and speak to people. We need to show them that we are normal people and not what their propaganda says about us. Many of those people are stuck in echo chambers. If they are too much of a dick then don't ruin your day over it, but we need community outreach. It's about the only thing that will get them to stop voting for those people.
Why the fuck should we do that? We’ve tried compassion. We’ve tried to dispel the disinformation. We’ve tried to show that we bleed the same. They. Don’t. Fucking. Care.
The high-road has worked so well, hasn’t it?
Honestly much of the reason so many people went to the republicans is because many people in the democratic sphere often have terrible attitudes and charisma. I get that you can't always keep yourself from getting angry. I struggle with this too. It's just not helpful. Better to keep your mouth shut and be as reasonable as possible. Don't belittle them or treat them like they are dumb. If you get mad just walk away. Save it for another day. You don't have to say everything you think.
We only need small margins to win. It's not like we have to change everyone's minds. If half of Democrats would try to reach out to one person then that might be enough to flip some people or just show them that they can be brave and go against the groupthink and culty bullshit. We should absolutely protect our spaces from them however. Don't let them in our spaces just don't be a dick about it. Calmly explain that you don't allow hate there and most of the people in that space have zero desire to hear that stuff.
I genuinely wish I knew even one republican who could be flipped in time, but tbh anyone who voted for trump this go around is incredibly unlikely to change
No, many of the people who voted for him, maybe half can be flipped. Might as well put in the bit of effort now because if we don't the rest of our life is only going to get much worse. Not just us but everyone. We have many advantages. One is the Republicans have to spend a ton of money to get anyone on their side. They are bleeding money like crazy trying to run propaganda. All it takes is you talking to someone and for a few dollars of your time, you can destroy tens of thousands of dollars of Republican and corporate propaganda.
bruh ive tried, but for a lot of the ones i know, trump is their god. im just too exhausted at this point to try and deprogram anyone who voted against basic human rights to make their pockets a little fuller
That's okay, maybe keep it in mind for others though. Sometimes a simple hello is all people need to know you aren't a bad person and not what their corporate propaganda portrays you as. Good luck.
You get your rights by convincing the ambiguous majority to demand them or at the very least be uncomfortable with bigotry against us. We are few and lack any means of taking power or protecting ourselves from governments without allies.
I don’t know, the idea of initiating conversations with conservatives about whether they think I deserve rights or not (when they probably don’t think I do), does not sound like a good time, nor do I expect it to be particularly fruitful.
I don’t know how we get out of this, but I don’t think putting myself in hostile situations and arguing is going to be effective, you know? I think conservatives will only turn on Trump when they are personally negatively impacted by his actions. Appealing to their empathy and logic isn’t going to work, because they didn’t logic themselves into supporting him and they think empathy is woke bullshit.
Well don't put yourself in danger or anything, but even if someone doesn't like you. It's not a big deal. You don't have to feel bad because some dumb dude got annoyed with you. I kind of think of that as a badge of honor. If you are pissing off people who want to censor art, and dehymanize innocent people. You Re probably doing something right. Pissing them off shouldn't be the goal tho. It's better to walk away before you get mad. Idk, maybe worth a shot sometimes.
Many of these people are also just massively afraid of being different. Showing them that it's okay to be different can do wonders. If they see that you can go against the cult then they can as well maybe. Most people won't admit they changed. Often they have to sleep on it. Don't get discouraged just because it seems like everyone is doubling down.
Also stay safe fellow transie.
I think "allies" also share a responsibility in speaking up. Trans people should not be alone out there.
If it is difficult to speak to right wingers about this, recruiting and coaching others for discussion on their behalf might be an easier route and potentially more fruitful.
Most of them do but it's not the best topic to run on politically since only a slight majority of Americans support trans rights. I think it's like 65/35 or 60/40 depending on the issue. It's better if they campaign on workers rights, regulating corporations so we can own our own devices and at least partially nationalize the telecom networks for the people so these companies can't force us into extremely bad platforms and stuff. Net neutrality, right to repair, rolling back the extensive patents which make things like prescription drugs expensive, forced open access to infrastructure, workers rights and protections. Making corporations pay the same tax rate as workers. Depoliticizing the supreme court. These are all very popular issues they could run on and of course protections for trans people and other minorities would be much appreciated. Things they don't need to run on are trans rights primarily, immigration, even if they want to compromise and stuff which is fine, they shouldn't run on expanding spending on healthcare because inflation is high and thats one of the primary reasons it is so high, which is making everyone poorer to funnel trillions of dollars into the pharmaceutical industry.
They should go social Democrat, move toward European style democracy. Get rid of the two party system. Regulate the rich so they can't destroy our entire society for greed and power. Take back control of the elections and state for the people, not allow tens of thousands of superpacs and nonprofits to advertise to get their corrupt politicians elected.
