Maybe it shouldn’t be a thing? Trans Lemmy is so small that I think if anyone is subscribed to one, they’re prolly subscribed to the other, which means seeing the same post back to back?

Should /c/mtf be non-selfie, because the entire point of /c/trans_joy is showcasing happy trans people?

Or am I up my own butt about this?

I would say that not everyone in transjoy is necessarily subscribed to mtf. I reckon ftm peeps exist as well.

The way ive always thought about it is transjoy is more of a place for everyone trans ftm/mtf, plus its seen by more people and more frequently ends up on All. Whereas mtf i thought of as more of a place specifically dedicated to mtf trans people, more of a safe haven for us, and you can post pictures and ask advice there without necessarily inviting the larger trans community into it. For someone just starting to find themselves, this could be the difference between posting and not posting.

Also also, its worth thinking about what the value of a rule would be vs its drawbacks and what were taking away. I feel personally that an extra view of the same post is not worth trading off for the gatekeeping rule culture that would lead to.

Also also also, this place isnt big, and theres not alot of content. Would we remove posts that violate this rule? Because i would see that as a major drawback. I want more content not less of it. I want people to feel comfortable and not feel like theres a bunch of rules to follow to properly interact with us.

Maybe if we were as big as reddit, but i dont want that either. I love the intimacy of this place. It feels like im actually talking to someone. But if this place ever got that big then i could see this rule being a thing. But i do think to make such a ruling right now would harm the community, not help it

Ps theres apps thatll combine crossposts for you

Edit: removed ableism

Honestly, that's prolly the fairest take.

(Sadly, I can't picture you or anyone or even me, but that's okay.)

[-] brookedSmile 2 points 5 days ago

Im soooooo sorry!! That was an extremely ableist analogy to someone i know has an issue with that. Genuinely feel bad and i deeply apologize ❤️❤️

[-] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

No no, it’s fine. I’ve just had a couple of strokes and that section of my brain doesn’t work anymore. Other people can do the face recognizing. I’m gonna be a turtle.

What doesnt kill you makes you fiercer!

For real tho, glad youre still around kicking! Enjoy the nice weather! Stay beautiful ❤️

[-] MoonrootWitch@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 days ago

Hi, one of the culprits here, hehe 😅.

First of all, I want to apologize to you and to anyone who found the double posts kind of annoying. That said, I mostly did it for the reasons brookedSmile mentioned (sorry, I don’t know how to tag people here).

I also got a bit excited about how my transition has been going lately, and I wanted to share my pics in every space I came across. Anyway, I’ll avoid double posting from now on and will just post in one of the two communities instead, while I see what everyone else thinks about it.

I do enjoy posting in both communities because I’ve noticed that some users only interact in one of them, although I might just be mixing up which posts I saw where, so maybe that point isn’t even valid 😅.

Maybe a better approach would be changing things up between communities, different titles, different pics, that kind of thing. Honestly, I do enjoy taking pictures of myself, so I wouldn’t mind doing that at all.

Anyway, I really appreciate people bringing this up instead of silently getting annoyed about it. I genuinely didn’t mean to spam anyone 😔.

I think there might be a crosspost function to move a post from one community to another, rather than creating two completely different posts.

There’s problems inherent with a lot of post titling stuff on Lemmy, for example, I don’t title a lot of my photography, just listing where I took it, which means a lot of my posts have the title “Portland, OR.” and Lemmy thinking they’re related/the same.

I think something structurally needs to happen with post categorization and submission at the platform/server level.

Is it weird that I know your wardrobe by seeing your username? (Not your face though, I can’t do faces at all.)

[-] MoonrootWitch@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 days ago

Yes, there is a crosspost function, I think I might have even used it before, but I kind of dislike how it looks hehe.

Also, now I’m a bit confused. Wouldn’t crossposting still cause the same issue? I mean, people who browse both communities would probably still see the post twice, right? (I’m not really sure how the general feed handles that.)

I’m also kind of a Lemmy newbie, so could you explain a bit more what you mean by Lemmy thinking posts are related/the same? I’m curious what implications that has.

And honestly, I’ll take “recognizing my wardrobe from my username” as a compliment 😄.

P.S. Sorry if any of this comes across as rude or overly direct. I’ve been told before that I can sound a bit blunt sometimes even when I genuinely don’t mean to, so I tried to word this carefully 😅.

P.P.S. (I think that’s how a second PS works?) Just to make sure I understood correctly, the main issue is the double posting itself and not the fact that I’m posting outfit pics here, right? Because I think I look kinda cute today and was hoping to share the ootd here specifically haha.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about when I say that Lemmy thinks posts with similar titles are related.

Crossposting is kind of weird. It's supposed to provide a single comment thread for all the communities a post has been put into, but it doesn't. I think it's just broken.

Also, you're fine. You're weird, but who among us isn't? Thanks for being around.

[-] MoonrootWitch@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 days ago

Ahhh, I get it now. Hmm, that does seem like a bit of an issue, especially for people who naturally end up using similar titles across multiple posts for unrelated reasons.

Yeah, crossposting sounds like a neat idea in theory, but it also sounds like the implementation still has a few rough edges.

Yay for being weird 😄 And thank you too, you’re very nice :3

Btw, I really like how you customized your desktop environment. I’ve been meaning to put more effort into customization myself, but I kind of had to stick with Pop!_OS for a while because only Debian/Ubuntu-based distros seemed to have the right OpenSSL version (or maybe some related package, I honestly don’t remember exactly what the issue was, it was traumatic enough that I erased most memories related to those horrible days of trying literally everything to connect to the network 😭) that worked with my university’s ancient Wi-Fi certificates. I kept getting errors (something related to handshake/authentication, I think) no matter what solution I tried online 😭

Since I was going to campus almost every day to work on my thesis, I ended up relying on Pop!_OS out of necessity. I also kind of wanted to try Cosmic, so it worked out fine for a while.

But once I can distrohopp more freely again, I definitely want to go back to making overly customized and slightly unhinged setups.

I tried to make my computer feel as fictitious as possible. When a protagonist sits down at a computer in a video game, she’s definitely not looking at Windows, and instead just some sort of artistic representation of a familiar but different-looking computer.

That’s what I went for. 🐢🐢🐢

I agree, but also I'd rather see a general solution rather than us making specific rules in our communitues. I see doubled crossposts frequently and it is annoying, I'd rather ask for the client or server software to merge them in some way so the problem can be addressed globally.

This community has always allowed image content. I've never really considered changing that. I'm curious what folks have to say about it.

When I first made this community I made it because I frequently browsed r/mtf and could not find a community on Lemmy that really fit with that.

I feel really that this community has diverged in some important ways from that subreddit though, and one of those has been allowing images to be posted here. I didnt want this to be a text post only community because I felt that it was good for transfem and questioning folks to have a place to share anything they wanted to. Most of the rules revolve around this principle of protecting a safe space for transfem/questioning people. Some kinds of images are banned. But I hadn't considered banning selfies in particular.

[-] Daxter101 12 points 1 week ago

You're not wrong to think it's kind of annoying, I also think that, but I think it's a general Fediverse limitation in Lemmy, and it shouldn't be solved by limiting individual communities and using rules.

This problem of multiple fitting communities and multiple uploads appears in many places in Lemmy, and solutions on the tech side have been discussed. One solution I read and liked, was being able to repost posts in other communities, and the reposts to function as posts within the community, but appear under a single heading in user feeds that are subscribed to both.

No one has gotten around to making something like it yet, but I feel that 'rules per community' to prevent that experience, with the reasoning that "eh, most people are subscribed to both", when some people might only want to be in one, is against the spirit of this environment

[-] celeste@feddit.org 8 points 1 week ago

Doesn't really bother me🤷🏼‍♀️

[-] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 5 points 1 week ago

Just switch to piefed and the two posts will be combined in your feed. Simple.

[-] irotsoma@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 week ago

Is there a setting for that? I use piefed, but I still often get multiple on the feed. I thought it was only crossposts that get collapsed, not separate posts of the same image to multiple communities. But I might just be missing a setting.

Should people just be crossposting instead of uploading twice if it's the same post?

[-] irotsoma@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 6 days ago

In my opinion, yes. There are exceptions of course since the different groups may require highlighting different aspects, but in general, yes.

[-] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 1 points 1 week ago

I don't know, I was scrolling on Voyager and the two posts were next to each other, so I figured that was Voyager's best interpretation of Piefed combining them

[-] GalacticSushi 5 points 1 week ago

I don't really mind. It's an extra fraction of a second of scrolling, doesn't seem like a big enough deal to start making new rules.
