Is it bad that, despite being a fan of lifting and having done a good bit in my life, I also agree with this in a literal sense?

Because putting pressure on boys to fit a single segment of masculinity isn't healthy. Yeah, you gotta get kids on an exercise path so they build the habit and stay healthy physically, but there really are people that push lifting as what a man is supposed to do. It ain't cool.

I get the point of the post, and it's brilliant. Just noting that I'm of the mind that they accidentally hit on something real in the process of pointing out the absurdity of the "nice" transphobes.

Haiiii hii hii just want to pop in with a couple fun facts,

There’s no serious risk of damaging your joints from lifting, actually it’s the opposite. Resistance training will reduce the likelihood of injury throughout all stages of life.

There also isn’t really any hint of truth to the old myth “muscle growth is the result of damaging the muscles so they grow back bigger”. It stems from very early misinterpretations of experimental data and became something people just repeat forever with no factual basis.

Catabolism (breakdown of muscle) occurs all the time, and is usually balanced by anabolism (building muscle). It would be more accurate to say that “sufficiently challenging bouts of resistance training stimulate greater rates of anabolism for a period of time which result in a net gain of muscle mass”

Many common factors can tip the scale towards catabolism which is very bad for your health and quality of life (sarcopenia, menopause, HRT in some cases) and training is the best most consistent lever we can pull to mitigate those negatives. Women especially reap massive benefits from training, doubly so after midlife

I guess this post is about as factual as the arguments it's making fun of ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The post is good! I like the post! Thank you for posting :3

I just like to shill for resistance training, it transforms people’s lives. Posts like these are a great opportunity for me to do so, where it’s mentioned offhandedly and maybe with a misconception I can talk about

I’ve had several people on fedi reach out to say these comments have helped them out in some way, so it’s just something I like to keep up with :3

The entire concept of muscle tearing has very little scientific evidence, it's still a thing we don't actually know.

Well, as long as you're doing it responsibly and working your way up.

(I did 200lb on the chest press machine a couple days ago, and my left wrist has informed me that this was a very bad idea. Luckily, it seems to be recovering, though.)

[-] Carnelian@lemmy.world 4 points 12 hours ago

Yeah :3 Just based on teaching people to do various chest exercises, wrist pain is usually caused by holding the implement too far up the hand, creating a moment arm that bends your wrist open. Around 150-200lbs is usually when people stop being able to tolerate such a grip

https://stronglifts.com/bench-press/#Bench_Press_Setup

If you search this page for “bench grip” it will take you to an image of three hands, the rightmost of which has a red line and a green line. Best image I’ve ever found for communicating the spot. If you get it down you should feel no discomfort at all in your wrists

This is absolutely foolish. Resistance training is good for everyone, not just dumb jock cisheads.

If you're going to grow old, you'll thank yourself every day of your life if you train up mobility. You'll be an 80 year old still walking around under your own power instead of one feebly fumbling for your life alert when the challenge of two consecutive steps defeats you.

[-] LeFrog@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 9 hours ago

Not sure if I am getting wooshed with your comment but here are my 2 cents:

  1. Its mostly genetics. Of course living healthy and exercising helps a lot. But whether you are fit in your 80s is mostly genetic lottery and luck. And being able to exercise your whole life is part of having luck, too.
  2. The screenshot is about lifting too much weight. Which is quite the opposite of "train up mobility".

That being said, the text is hillarious and great.

[-] LurkingLuddite@piefed.social 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Nope, it is not about genetics. That is a total misconception. Strength training makes a HUGE difference, even if you're going to end up with arthritis.

The text is funny, just horribly misguided in its sentiment. "Feel the burn" is not about injuring yourself. At all. In any way.

I for one am perfectly ok with everyone being called chicks. I can't help but imagine everyone as a fuzzy yellow baby bird, and that brings me joy. I completely get the post.. but cute birds for everyone!

[-] OwOarchist@pawb.social 12 points 12 hours ago

I'm cis, but I'm not that cis. I definitely wouldn't be offended to be called a chick.

This is giving my comment a year ago saying "I am not trans tho"

[-] kivihiili 17 points 13 hours ago

okay but if you come across a stray puppygirl how do you pick her up then??

[-] TotallynotJessica 16 points 13 hours ago

First you need to earn their trust by letting her approach you. Then you can give her treats to endure yourself to her. You'll know you succeeded once she feels comfortable with you petting her head.

[-] AzuraTheSpellkissed 5 points 11 hours ago

But what kind of treats should I carry around? 😰 If I'd ever get this chance, I feel like I'd mess it up 😥

[-] birdwing 8 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

A book of the Good Witch Azura should help. Hoot!

There's also lgballt, but I haven't posted there in a while. Everybody can, though.

[-] TotallynotJessica 3 points 8 hours ago

It's hard to keep comms alive 😞

[-] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 11 points 15 hours ago

I'm imagining that jacked monk but hes in satanic temple robes (is that a thing?)

[-] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 hours ago

I can never keep track of which Satanists do what lol. Church of Satan, Satanic church, temple of, etc. But yeah, there's one or another of them that do the robe thing. Looks pretty sharp too
