it's not even the energy drink, instant mashed potatoes are disgusting in and of themselves

Blåhaj has disabled downvotes 😔

[-] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 31 points 1 day ago

Sounds awful, kinda shit and overly controlling. Freedom to express disinterest and dislike is an important function of a healthy discourse.

People can still express these things via comments and posts? Forums and others formats do perfectly well without down and upvotes. I've now been using blåhaj for quite a long time and I can't say I miss downvotes much.

Comments and posts don't push poor posts down

As others have mentioned this is why we got rid of downvotes! Our instance is a trans safe space and we often get downvote brigaded by phobes.

[-] Saapas@piefed.zip 4 points 1 day ago

I guess the instance relies on more active moderation to clear low quality posts?

We do very actively remove bigoted content, but beyond that we're not really large enough to have many low quality posts locally. Some communities here very much embrace shitposting such as this one, so no moderation required there.

[-] verdare@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 day ago

Eh, the level of effort/friction in making a constructive comment vs downvoting isn’t really comparable. Removing the latter option shifts a larger burden onto the moderation team. That said, downvotes can be abused too, so I’m honestly not sure which is better.

[-] LadyAutumn 26 points 1 day ago

Members of marginalized communities commonly experience downvote brigading from bigoted groups. It can function as a silencing tactic as well, as most clients auto hide highly downvoted comments.

It's a tradeoff, but I kind of like it. For me, it's made me realize how much I pre-judge comments based on their vote ratios instead of on their content, which is more than I'd realized. I think it's a mechanic that contributes to the group-thinkiness of a platform. Upvotes do too, but I think downvotes specifically are kind of a contextless "shame button" that don't contribute as much as a critical comment, but do tend to bias new arrivals to a downvoted comment against it before they're able to judge for themselves.

I think it's there because other servers would downvote brigade blahaj? I'm not sure of the history there but I would think Ada did it for a reason.

[-] atopi@piefed.blahaj.zone 14 points 1 day ago

Discourse can function without a button that shows your dislike for someones response
There are other ways to show your disagreement

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I like this one in particular

[-] pewgar_seemsimandroid 4 points 1 day ago

blahaj having it disabled for so long made me used to it and so now even when i can downvote, i downvote less.

[-] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

What if we upvote our way to an overflow?

This is a pretty good case to re enable

[-] KoboldCoterie@pawb.social 7 points 1 day ago

Have they actually disabled downvotes, or just hidden the GUI for it, out of curiosity? If you use a front-end like https://alexandrite.app/ (and enable them in options), do they work?

We have disabled them which means we can't downvote and they don't federate to our servers. They more or less don't exist. Others servers can downvote and they will federate to other servers that have downvotes enabled.

[-] Phoeniqz@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 day ago

doesn't that mean that everyone but you knows when you're being downvoted? Because that doesn't really make sense to me...

[-] melmi 13 points 1 day ago

My understanding is that not federating downvotes means that for blahaj communities, the canonical vote count has no downvotes, and instances can downvote if they like but their downvotes don't get federated.

So if someone makes a post on this community and 20 people upvote it, then 10 Lemmy worlders downvote it, Lemmy.world would see a score of 10 but sopuli.xyz would see a score of 20 still.

It means people on servers with downvotes enabled see the downvotes. Other users on blåhaj don't.

[-] melmi 8 points 1 day ago

You're not on blahaj, so you'd be able to downvote anyway. But I did notice when I used Boost that it doesn't disable the downvote UI, so you can basically pretend to downvotd even though it doesn't work.

[-] cepelinas@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 day ago

Then how is there an 83% like percentage?

We have disabled them which means we can't downvote and they don't federate to our servers. They more or less don't exist. Others servers can downvote and they will federate to other servers that have downvotes enabled.

[-] gustofwind@lemmy.world 25 points 1 day ago

I like to replace energy drinks with water because I'm 75% water and I crave myself

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Are you merlin brawndo?

[-] Evil_Incarnate@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 day ago

You're not the only one...

[-] swelter_spark@reddthat.com 8 points 1 day ago

I do this, but with almond milk to add extra nutrients.

[-] colin@lemmy.uninsane.org 10 points 1 day ago

idk about mashed potatoes, but i do just add matcha to half the things i bake now. matcha banana bread? yes. matcha pancakes? hell yeah. does it taste better? actually yes, but more importantly my pancakes are caffeinated now, as i argue they should have been from the start.

[-] criss_cross@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

This isn’t real.

Right?????

[-] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

For a serious answer, I don't think the drink could get it to be that green. So if they did use the drink, they also had to have used food coloring, and at that point, why even do that and why not just use food coloring, it's easier and the mashed potatoes with look right still. Maybe? Hopefully?

[-] danekrae@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
