i dont understand anything...

[-] stenAanden@feddit.dk 77 points 1 week ago

It tries to communicate that libertarians aren’t fascists. Which is incorrect.

[-] JackbyDev@programming.dev 32 points 1 week ago

I'm really confused that the libertarian seems to be differing from the Democrats in the meme when Mamdani won the primary and is endorsed by the Democrats. I'm not doubting there are people who typically vote blue who wouldn't like him (and some might not even vote because of it, or prefer Cuomo), but they certainly don't fit the stereotypes of the characters on the left in this meme.

This is just "It's too late democrats, I've depicted you as the foolish soyjak and the libertarians as the noble chad."

[-] Maxxie@piefed.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 week ago

libertarianism is about how the government should f off (appealing if you're already rich)

fascism is about how all power should be vested in a single person who leads everyone towards the will of the nation (appealing if you're stupid and a bit of a romantic)

admittedly today's "libertarians" are often in name only

[-] UnixSlvt42@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 week ago

Today I learned that voting for a democratic socialist is fascist.

[-] frezik 43 points 1 week ago

But how is that in any way compatible with libertarianism?

I presume not "libertarian" in the old sense of anarchism. Even that doesn't particularly like electoral politics at all.

[-] UnixSlvt42@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 week ago

I don't have to agree with everything Mamdani says to realize that the establishment Democrat party is incapable of standing up to this administration. Hence the whole political pluralism thing.

[-] stenAanden@feddit.dk 37 points 1 week ago

Libertarians are overwhelmingly siding with republicans. Doesn’t that mean anything?

[-] UnixSlvt42@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 week ago

Uh no. Does the USSR mean anything when talking to an anarchist?

Trans rights are human rights Free Palestine. Abolish ICE.

That any clearer for you?

[-] sem 8 points 1 week ago

I'm really confused how someone who values human rights would vote libertarian.

[-] JandroDelSol@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago

libertarians literally don't want social support to be a thing, how are they even close to a demsoc

[-] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 5 points 1 week ago

Americans don't know what words mean that's why

[-] djsoren19 16 points 1 week ago

No, but it's also not American Libertarian

[-] UnixSlvt42@piefed.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 week ago

Correct. I'm an actual libertarian. Not a classical liberal.

[-] djsoren19 25 points 1 week ago

then you probably shouldn't use the American Libertarian flag for your meme

[-] UnixSlvt42@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago
[-] JackbyDev@programming.dev 20 points 1 week ago

You use (and say you like) the symbols of a specific political party but then defend yourself saying that you mean the ideology as a whole (and a huge "no true Scotsman") while criticizing a different specific political party. Maybe don't use those symbols if you wanna make your point better.

[-] JackbyDev@programming.dev 14 points 1 week ago

You sound like people that fly confederate flags but say "It's heritage, not hate."

[-] UnixSlvt42@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 week ago
[-] JackbyDev@programming.dev 6 points 1 week ago

You think it's cool you sound like a racist?

[-] UnixSlvt42@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 week ago

You can't tell the difference between ideologies like Geolibertarianism and anarcho-capitalism. Why would I care what I sound like to a politically illiterate person like you? Anyone who disagrees with you probably sounds like a racist.

[-] JackbyDev@programming.dev 8 points 1 week ago

Can you? You're the one using the flag because "you like it."

[-] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

That flag predates American libertarians and even America itself

[-] djsoren19 4 points 1 week ago

The Swastika predates Nazi Germany as a symbol for many years, but if you post a flag with a Swastika on it, people are going to assume you mean a Nazi. Once a symbol gets adopted and popularized with a group, it gets associated with that group, regardless of prior meaning.

[-] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

Nobody but the truly ignorant are going to think you're a Nazi for flying this, and it's borderline racist to suggest otherwise

[-] the_q@lemmy.zip 48 points 1 week ago

You're not alone. This is one inane meme.

[-] UnixSlvt42@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 week ago

Well this here is Earth. That over there is a beetle. Those up there are clouds. Oooh and babies come from a stork. I have no idea what a stork is but I've been assured that's where babies come from.

[-] luciole@beehaw.org 39 points 1 week ago

Please don't assume everyone is American.

[-] Smorty 12 points 1 week ago

water u talkin about?... i was geniunely askin whats up with this post - there r some symbols i feel one already needs to kno to understand it.... u kno? or maybe some stereotypes im unbeknownst of ~~

[-] magic_smoke 47 points 1 week ago

Yeah that's because most of them are.

If you're in favor of Mamdani you're probably not nearly as right-leaning as the vast majority of americans who would label themselves as libertarian.

[-] Truscape 31 points 1 week ago

Political pluralism unfortunately doesn't really count for shit in a winner-takes-all election system that doesn't allow proportional representation, but I digress.

[-] UnixSlvt42@piefed.blahaj.zone 8 points 1 week ago

Well how are we supposed to get the proportional representation without the pluralism? If everybody consolidates into a single tent what incentive is there for reform? Fusion voting was legal in many states not that long ago.

[-] Truscape 13 points 1 week ago

At the state level I could see it happening, but unless the action is possible at the federal level, any presented candidate becomes a minor spoiler candidate for any active reformists.

This is largely a "system is broken, but in order to remove the limitations we need to work inside the system" problem, which I'm aware is frustrating as all hell. As it stands, we still need to consolidate our votes behind one of the two parties to make change because of political structure - and attempting to usurp it from the outside will always fail.

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 4 points 1 week ago

This is largely a "system is broken, but in order to remove the limitations we need to work inside the system"

The second half of that statement isn't really true. You can get a lot done with a general strike.

[-] UnixSlvt42@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 week ago

People have been saying this for decades and it's gotten us nowhere so...

Glossary of Terms:

The people on the left: American Democrats. They hate Republicans, the fascist party of Trump, but many loyal voters don't realize how right wing their own party is in comparison to other countries.

Libertarians: American "Libertarians," which are a right wing minor political party and political movement in America. They have traditionally favored radical deregulation, no taxes, and individual liberties above all else. Unfortunately for right wing Libertarians, the ideology is nonsensical, eventually forcing them to choose between wanting unrestricted capitalism and siding with fascism(like the president of Argentina), or freedom from authority and siding with anarchists(the original libertarians). The poster seems to represent the later perspective.

Liz Cheney: A former Republican who allied with the Democratic Party in opposition to Trump. She has very conservative views, but was seen by Kamala Harris and establishment Democrats as representing an important voting base that could win over. In hindsight, their refusal to embrace more left wing positions might've cost them more than any conservatives they would have alienated.

Mamdani: Democratic candidate for the Mayor of New York. He is from the Democratic Socialist faction of the party, and was strongly opposed by establishment Democrats in the primary race. Many joked that Democrats oppose Mamdani more than they oppose Trump, and I agree. A socialist as the Mayor of a single city isn't gonna change things much, while Trump is an actual dictator who is killing people and ruining lives. The attention paid isn't proportional to importance.

[-] Fleur_@aussie.zone 19 points 1 week ago

Ah, Mamdami. And his famously libertarian policy stance

[-] anothercatgirl 10 points 1 week ago

yeah, I hope the popular guy wins

[-] UnixSlvt42@piefed.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 week ago

The popular candidate winning in a democracy? That doesn't make sense. (This is a joke BTW)

[-] TotallynotJessica 3 points 1 week ago

I wouldn't be surprised if the Texas national guard gets sent in intimidate voters. It really just depends on how much rich New Yorkers are willing to pay Trump. Considering how the ultra rich own most of Manhattan, it's a real possibility.

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Yeah you've really got three strains of libertarian in America:

Don't tread on me. Folks who are generally republicans that smoke weed. Some believe in abortion others don't.

Don't tread on anyone. Folks who often wind their way to the libleft group though they may remain pro right to start your own business.

Then you've got these sorts.

The first group sucks. The second are often a bit confused. And the third, well I like em but I don't think they should decide laws or policy. And there's middle grounds across all of it. A lot of the Ron Paul people became ordinary progressives for example.

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
