Doesn't add alt text to post about adding alt text
LMAOOOO
The image itself has alt text. This shows in Voyager, at least, after opening the image in full view. Should show when you hover your mouse as well:
Ohhhhh, it's a boost issue lol
Yeah, of course I added alt-text to my post about adding alt-text
You should put the alt text in the body, a lot of the time it can break when federating.
I do it like this:
alt text
the markdown syntax is:
alt text
<insert alt text here>
It doesn't show on Eternity either.
Or Summit
Or Sync
Same I realized lmao
How is it a boost issue? I can see the alt text in Voyager. Is it missing in other contexts?
Seems like you should contact the dev and pass on the friendly reminder :3
Yep, even works on the lemmy mobile website when you long press the image.
Reminder to not abuse alt text for purposes that aren't accessibility: https://bsky.app/profile/nofunoverlord.top/post/3lz5fkfwmts24
Thanks!
But you didn't add alt text to your image :(
Eek, you're right, will fix it now!
Here's the post on an alternate instance: https://zeppelin.social/profile/nofunoverlord.top/post/3lz5fkfwmts24

Alt text can be awesome at providing additional context for people with other conditions, like autism :3
Guten Morgen
My names not Morgan.
how do you add alt text on lemmy? or does it have to already be in the image metadata?
For inline images it is
Depends on the app/surface you're using Jerboa/Voyager just give you a space when creating a post
Honestly this would be a good use for AI. Imagine a browser for the visually impaired that looks at every picture and describes it to the user, no alt text necessary
No and how is it determined what the AI actually tells you? Alt-text is pretty necessary and actuslly a standard people should follow
How is it determined what the OP tells you? I like the idea of vision impaired people being independent and not having to rely on web developers or posters doing the right thing, because how oftend does that happen? This post remindibg people to do the right thing illustrates that it isn't exactly normalized.
There's a degree of intentionality required for alt text.
Its not always helpful to completely describe the image, and its best for the whoever chose the image to also write the important parts of it i to the alt text. That also lets them choose the depth of the description and tone of the message to match the intent of including the image in the first place.
TO-DO List:
for real though, adding alt-text is really useful. I just don't think we should have to do it manually, AI should do it instead. Does anybody have such a handy tool maybe?
Adding alt text automatically would also help with searchability. I.e. i saw a meme, how do i find it again? Humans don't consistently add alt-text, so having it done automatically (as a backup option) would be nice.
Firefox has a beta extension to generate alt text on the fly locally
