Fellow pronoun users unite

My favourite pronoun is "that". I find it to be quite helpful in many situations. It is often forgotten that "that" is often used as pronoun.

I also enjoy "this", on occasion.

[-] vzqq 62 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

In my native dialect we have an additional pronoun that sits between “this” and “that” and means “far from the speaker but close to the listener”.

Pronouns rule.

EDIT: by popular request, the language in question is Italian.

I know Japanese and Korean have words for "this, close to me", "that, close to you" and "that, far from both of us". I'd assume other Asian languages would have the same distinction.

turkish has a tense for things that you heard from someone else, that has allegedly happened

[-] KSPAtlas@sopuli.xyz 3 points 3 days ago

Some dialects of English and Scots still have yon, which is further than both this and that

In my language their is no "male" or "Female" pronoun.

[-] Catoblepas@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 days ago

Thank you, I’m learning Spanish and this prompted me to look up the distinction in Spanish of ahí/allí/allá, because they had all just previous been presented to me as ‘there,’ but there’s a distance component in them as well.

"that that" identified.

“Good. Item seven. The had had and that that problem. Lady Cavendish, weren’t you working on this?’

Lady Cavendish stood up and gathered her thoughts. ‘Indeed. The uses of had had and that that have to be strictly controlled; they can interrupt the imaginotransference quite dramatically, causing readers to go back over the sentence in confusion, something we try to avoid.’

‘Go on.’

‘It’s mostly an unlicensed-usage problem. At the last count David Copperfield alone had had had had sixty three times, all but ten unapproved. Pilgrim’s Progress may also be a problem due to its had had/that that ratio.’

‘So what’s the problem in Progress?’

‘That that had that that ten times but had had had had only thrice. Increased had had usage had had to be overlooked, but not if the number exceeds that that that usage.’

‘Hmm,’ said the Bellman, ‘I thought had had had had TGC’s approval for use in Dickens? What’s the problem?’

‘Take the first had had and that that in the book by way of example,’ said Lady Cavendish. ‘You would have thought that that first had had had had good occasion to be seen as had, had you not? Had had had approval but had had had not; equally it is true to say that that that that had had approval but that that other that that had not.’

‘So the problem with that other that that was that…?’

‘That that other-other that that had had approval.’

‘Okay’ said the Bellman, whose head was in danger of falling apart like a chocolate orange, ‘let me get this straight: David Copperfield, unlike Pilgrim’s Progress, had had had, had had had had. Had had had had TGC’s approval?’

There was a very long pause. ‘Right,’ said the Bellman with a sigh, ‘that’s it for the moment. I’ll be giving out assignments in ten minutes. Session’s over – and let’s be careful out there.”

That seems like a fun book. I might have to look into that series

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

he is my favorite author

[-] ruuster13@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 days ago

That was not prepared for her.

Why not he/her?

[-] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 76 points 4 days ago

It must be hard to not use pronouns it means so many words are banned from daily use I can't imagine how hard it is to talk at all like that.

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 days ago

shadow the hedgehog has no pronouns, you will refer to shadow the hedgehog solely by shadow the hedgehog's name

[-] QuoVadisHomines@sh.itjust.works 32 points 4 days ago

The sentence that was just posted from the account that is being replied to by this account almost contained no pronouns.

Writing without pronouns creates weird shit like the last sentence I wrote.

There is a social collapse occurring but it’s not due to some “moral failing” of individuals or something. It’s because any and all opportunity to socialize and exist without the expectation to spend or make money has been slowly squeezed out. Things that were sustainable but not growing have been bought and hallowed out to increase their profit. Any sort of friction in our lives is ruthlessly stomped out

And in spite of all that effort to maximize productivity, we’re still driving off a cliff economically. So we get an economic break down due to incompetent leadership at companies, and we get a social break down because there is a constant ever present attempt to center our entire lives around corporate profit at the expense of civil society.

Isn't the very first word of the USA Constitution a pronoun? "We"?

[-] brown567@sh.itjust.works 13 points 3 days ago

Nope, it's an article "The"

Constitution, though, yeah that one starts with "We"

[-] Cevilia 2 points 3 days ago

Thanks. Fixed. :)

[-] _stranger_@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Yes but they meant them, not us. They kinda fixed it later with patches but there's still a lot of launch day bugs.

Graul Piggs? Lemme guess, his parent's last names were actually Griggs, and his dad was too drunk when writing him his birth certificate and wrote down "Graul Piggs" I instead of Paul Gribbs. Mom was out of it cause birth, and dad was so embarrassed he just went with it.

They then both changed their last names to escape embarrassment and shame.

[-] Slovene@feddit.nl 5 points 3 days ago

And his mom and dad are probably also brother and sister and father and daughter at the same time.

[-] SoleInvictus 5 points 3 days ago

Their family tree is a holiday wreath.

[-] bluecat_OwO@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Dark reference, in this economy

[-] riwo 45 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

sees completely harmless, maybe a little unusual, at worst a little cringe stuff: "is this the collapse of society??"

edit: eyo, im talking about this piggs dipshit, thinking pronouns and palastine flags are the collapse of society. have y'all such little trust in your local queer demon?

[-] DmMacniel@feddit.org 35 points 4 days ago

nothing about what is happening in the USA is harmless!

[-] AbsolutelyNotAVelociraptor@sh.itjust.works 33 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Idk mate...

gestures at everything

Trump meeting a war criminal, wanted by the ICC with honors and a regal treatment to discuss a peace treaty in which the other involved party is not invited.

Trump also sending the army to seize control of democratic towns.

Creating a paramilitary force to kidnapp and disappear non "pure americans".

Trying to make it so he can be elected more than twice.

Suggesting that vote by mail shouldn't exist (while also talking about voting rights of "wrong" people).

I mean... I'm not sure I'd call any of these "harmless" if I had a functioning brain... And these are just those that came to mind in the last couple of mins. We don't want to go search the archive...

[-] basiclemmon98@lemmy.dbzer0.com 30 points 4 days ago

I fear your edit did not come soon enough to save you 😔

[-] architectonas@lemmy.world 20 points 4 days ago

What is completely harmless?

[-] Denjin@feddit.uk 6 points 4 days ago

Mostly Harmless

[-] Taalnazi@lemmy.world 14 points 4 days ago

I think the reason you got downlemmied is because the "is this the collapse of society" you posted can be taken to refer sarcastically to the "completely harmless..." person, ie. the one with the Palestine flag and so on.

So you came off as ridiculing the Palestine pronoun user.

[-] BaroqueInMind@piefed.social 6 points 4 days ago

I'm on PieFed, what the fuck is a "downlemmy"?

[-] user224@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I guess refers to being downvoted a lot.

Also, is your profile picture an NFT?

[-] BaroqueInMind@piefed.social 1 points 3 days ago

My pfp is a PNG I found. NFTs are purchase receipts not the actual image.

[-] architectonas@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Aah, now I get it. Thanks for clarifying!

[-] cupcakezealot@piefed.blahaj.zone 17 points 3 days ago

if he's not a pronoun user what is he

[-] bluecat_OwO@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

he is not a he. Graul Piggs is what Graul Piggs is. Graul Piggs don't need no pronouns

[-] Simulation6@sopuli.xyz 14 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I was wondering what a US senior partner was, and there He was.

I’m sure they’ll shake it off once this is over and come out in a better place altogether.

  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.

  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
