President Trump signed an executive order Tuesday creating a task force to oversee the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and he's putting himself in charge of it.

The task force will coordinate federal planning for transportation, security and visa processing for the 2028 games. Mr. Trump said he's directing agencies like the State Department and Justice Department to "use every tool at their disposal to ensure a fantastic, safe and beautiful event."

The president will personally chair the task force — in line with a similar Trump-led task force to oversee preparations for the 2026 World Cup — and Vice President JD Vance will serve as its vice chair. Other members include Attorney General Pam Bondi and White House chief of staff Susie Wiles.

In response to questions from reporters, the president said Tuesday, "we'll do anything necessary to keep the Olympics safe, including using our National Guard or military."

Y'know, why can't there be 2 Olympics? One hosted somewhere else at the same time to just ignore and exile the US. I'm sorry the state has become a parasite leeching on the globe

Not just these: the Olympics are thoroughly corrupted

[-] Soapbox@lemmy.zip 26 points 8 hours ago

He's going to try to outdo the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics.

Who is the Jesse Owens equivalent for 2026? Will we see a Palestinian or a Cuban or perhaps a South African waving a gold medal while Trump looks on sourly?

[-] Alaik@lemmy.zip 3 points 5 hours ago

Any of those will be detained by ICE immediately.

[-] derry@midwest.social 17 points 7 hours ago

Release the Olympics Epstein files

[-] Bwaz@lemmy.world 31 points 10 hours ago

Hope LA just decides to cancel. It would be a disaster anyway with a large proportion of the attendees and participants not coming for fear of ICE or whatever other Republican military force Trump decides to "secure" the event with

[-] dukeofdummies@lemmy.world 8 points 6 hours ago

I was literally just thinking that. Vegas is a ghost town, most countries are in fear of being stopped at TSA, A Canadian was held for over a week...

This is gonna be a very weird Olympics.

[-] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 6 points 7 hours ago

Trump's smile looks like a duck with its bill chopped off

[-] omega_x3@lemmy.world 31 points 13 hours ago

LA was chosen because the last LA Olympics was the last time a city didn't rack up a huge debt getting things ready for the Olympics. And since there have been fewer and fewer cities requesting to host they picked LA extra early in hopes that LA can again keep the cost low enough that other cities might want to host again.

And now the idiot in chief is going to put himself in charge and insist that this be the biggest dumbest event ever to try to show off how great he is. And after the embarrassment of his birthday parade there is no way he is going to trust someone else to do this and if LA and the US goes bankrupt paying for it, then well that is Obama's and Biden's fault.

[-] Medic8teMe@lemmy.ca 9 points 12 hours ago

Wait until no one shows up like his bigly bestest military parade.

[-] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 35 points 15 hours ago

There's no way the Olympics can really happen. First, Trump will be refusing to issue visas to athletes from countries that fail to give him big cash donations. Then, ICE will end up detaining the best athletes from other countries just to make sure it's the American athletes who win.

What country would send its prized athletes here when they could end up detained and brutalized for months by ICE?

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Then, ICE will end up detaining the best athletes from other countries just to make sure it’s the American athletes who win.

More likely, they'll just pick out the middling athletes from countries the US doesn't like in order to make a spectacle of abusing them. Like, heaven help the fucking North Korean or Iranian or Cuban delegations. Heaven help anyone arriving from Palestine.

[-] hovercat 12 points 8 hours ago

I'd also be terrified to be a female athlete. Probably the reason Trump wants to head the committee, so he can personally inspect each and every competitor to make sure they're not actually trans.

Obviously he won't check for trans men, because that'd be gay, and no woman could ever compete with a "real" man so there's really no point, since they'd probably barely tie for 5th, and literally no one would care about that.

[-] Allemaniac@lemmy.world 35 points 19 hours ago

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST ABANDON ALL INTERACTION WITH THIS HELLHOLE

how are you fucking up the Olympics, the football World Cup, your economy AND the global hegemony world order so badly in mere months???

[-] Bwaz@lemmy.world 52 points 23 hours ago

LA should just bow out, cancel the whole thing. Not worth it.

[-] AlecSadler 20 points 23 hours ago

Haha that'd be hilarious...

...please please please.

Would be funny if it ended up being hosted in some shitty red state.

Oh man let it be Texas with their practically no building codes and already ridiculously poor public transit (in spite of tons of railways and massive, albeit quite stunning, urban highways).

Would love to watch a bunch shoddy rushed lowest-bidder stadiums on live TV. Do it.

[-] 13igTyme@lemmy.world 10 points 22 hours ago

The Olympic committee decides the host country and city around a decade in advance.

I was part of the marketing team that set up the website for LA's petition back in 2018.

[-] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 12 points 15 hours ago

Excuse me. This is America. We like to change our minds after it's too late.

[-] ikidd@lemmy.world 61 points 1 day ago

Almost a century since the last Nazi olympics. I guess we were due.

[-] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 9 points 23 hours ago

Hopefully, the people that Trump hates the most will take platinum medals. Foreign minority poors, basically. Hopefully they will talk about the shittiness of Dogey America and how Trump made a farce of the Olympics.

[-] postmateDumbass@lemmy.world 9 points 22 hours ago

All medals will have a big T on them.

Anyone care to bet?

[-] switcheroo@lemmy.world 229 points 1 day ago

Boycott the Olympics. Full stop.

Do not participate. Do not let your athletes go to a fascist country. Do not watch or follow any streams. And if you live in this shithole, don't go.

[-] dumbluck@midwest.social 37 points 1 day ago

They didn't boycott Hitler's Berlin Olympics. Now we come full circle...

[-] harrys_balzac@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 1 day ago

why would any country send athletes to the Olympics hosted in the US?

I really hope Canada just says fuck no. yes, it sucks for athletes who have been training for this. the whole situation also sucks for the rest of us.

I won't be supporting this and I will try to avoid supporting any athlete or sponsor of this.

[-] Ronno@feddit.nl 20 points 22 hours ago

As much as I want that to happen, it won't. Look at previous examples of Olympics hosted in Russia or China. Or look at the World Cup football in Qatar, in stadiums that were built by slaves, some of them died during construction. Countries didn't boycot those events, why would that happen now?

[-] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 2 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

Those host nations weren't actively insulting or bullying their customers. I think it would be much easier for all nations to snub America, because it has been made clear that Dogey America doesn't like them. Foreign politicians would be lauded for disowning the olympics, since America has been stoking the fires of nationalism by being a jerk.

[-] Revan343@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 hours ago

Because those events didn't run the risk of athletes being arrested for ??? and deported to a gulag in a third country

[-] Obi@sopuli.xyz 13 points 21 hours ago

And by "some of them", you mean an estimated 6500 workers have died building the stadiums in Qatar. Didn't stop Johnny football from enjoying his pints with the games.

[-] myrrh@ttrpg.network 14 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

...f*cking nazis, man; i hope the boycott is vast and conspicuous...

This article ignores the most important part of this: Congress allocated a cool $1B in security funding for the games. This commission is simply about grifting that. Thats why Trump himself is in charge, he wants to hand out no-bid contracts like tic tacs.

[-] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 68 points 1 day ago

Plus, it will hurt LA somehow. You can't have a democratic city with a governor he hates running things successfully.

[-] Exusia@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

Generally the Olympics fucks the home city when it leaves. Trash everywhere and tourist behaviour, lack of etiquette "I wont be here next week" types. And the infrastructure built for it.

All of it abandoned and left for the home country to figure out when it leaves. You dont want an Olympic regulation pool, track, and more, with an athlete's villa in that spot? Ah well we (the Olympic committee) fucked off after it ended so it's all yours to clean up!

[-] Part4@infosec.pub 8 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

The IOC sell the rights for billions then tell the athletes, the actual content creators, they have to be amateur. In that sense the athletes come across as complete mugs.

Obviously a small number of high profile athletes make loads of money, the rest are skint. Sound familiar? (Hint: hello capitalism), whose 'competition' ethos/blag is absolutely promoted by the games. Unfortunately for us all, we need global co-operation, if we are to divert course away from cataclysmic climate change, not global competition, with the many ending up skint while the few take all of the money. The olympics do not help; they are an anachronism

Trump using it for an illegal re-election boost, as he inevitably will, really puts another nail in its coffin. Pity the world cup is in the US (again). FIFA is killing that goose too.

We need a Palestinian Jesse Owens

[-] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 8 points 20 hours ago

Wow, Trump really thinks he'll still be capable of running a major event in 2028? He's clearly been dealing with age-related decline for a while now. There is no recovering once dementia sets in (at least, at this point in medical science.) Then with his distain for the scientific community and the diverse people who do the research, that doesn't bode well for finding a "cure" in the US anytime soon.

I have a feeling his participation is wishful thinking. I'll be shocked if he's still capable of running a bath unsupervised three years from now, let alone an entire Olympic event.

[-] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 15 points 15 hours ago

Nah, he just wants to be able to walk in on the girls gymnastics and swim teams while they're getting dressed.

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 8 hours ago

He also wants to have a commentary show with snoop

[-] uienia@lemmy.world 6 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

Wow, Trump really thinks he’ll still be capable of running a major event in 2028?

Trump has never run anything. He has people to do that for him. Usually people even more stupid and evil than himself.

[-] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 75 points 1 day ago

Boycotting the Olympics is in keeping with my policy of never visiting the United States again.

It is demonstrably unsafe to go there.

We need to make executive orders not a thing

[-] ceenote@lemmy.world 44 points 1 day ago

We need to fix congress and make them capable of tying their own shoes again, so executive orders won't be needed.
