President Trump signed an executive order Tuesday creating a task force to oversee the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and he's putting himself in charge of it.

The task force will coordinate federal planning for transportation, security and visa processing for the 2028 games. Mr. Trump said he's directing agencies like the State Department and Justice Department to "use every tool at their disposal to ensure a fantastic, safe and beautiful event."

The president will personally chair the task force — in line with a similar Trump-led task force to oversee preparations for the 2026 World Cup — and Vice President JD Vance will serve as its vice chair. Other members include Attorney General Pam Bondi and White House chief of staff Susie Wiles.

In response to questions from reporters, the president said Tuesday, "we'll do anything necessary to keep the Olympics safe, including using our National Guard or military."

This article ignores the most important part of this: Congress allocated a cool $1B in security funding for the games. This commission is simply about grifting that. Thats why Trump himself is in charge, he wants to hand out no-bid contracts like tic tacs.

Plus, it will hurt LA somehow. You can't have a democratic city with a governor he hates running things successfully.

Generally the Olympics fucks the home city when it leaves. Trash everywhere and tourist behaviour, lack of etiquette "I wont be here next week" types. And the infrastructure built for it.

All of it abandoned and left for the home country to figure out when it leaves. You dont want an Olympic regulation pool, track, and more, with an athlete's villa in that spot? Ah well we (the Olympic committee) fucked off after it ended so it's all yours to clean up!

The IOC sell the rights for billions then tell the athletes, the actual content creators, they have to be amateur. In that sense the athletes come across as complete mugs.

Obviously a small number of high profile athletes make loads of money, the rest are skint. Sound familiar? (Hint: hello capitalism), whose 'competition' ethos/blag is absolutely promoted by the games. Unfortunately for us all, we need global co-operation, if we are to divert course away from cataclysmic climate change, not global competition, with the many ending up skint while the few take all of the money. The olympics do not help; they are an anachronism

Trump using it for an illegal re-election boost, as he inevitably will, really puts another nail in its coffin. Pity the world cup is in the US (again). FIFA is killing that goose too.
