We can make our own customization options! With Blackjack, and Hookers! In fact, forget the customization!

(Jk although anyone could add new features and request to be merged)

Discord only does this cause they like money. But no tech company ever will add any personalosation beyond the minumum unless they can charge an absurd amount for it. Now, lemmy won't change that either, since it is a simple but reliable kind off software. We have to wait till Piefed implements it, and Pifed proves itself relieable enough to switch our instances over to it to get personalisation.

Y'all are too young to remember Myspace and it shows.

[-] Smorty 9 points 8 hours ago

partly yes, but also why mention it?

is it becuz that platform had mor customization? - if so, u cud hav simply commented "aaaaah, i rembr the gud old days with highly customizable myspace ~ ~ ~ ~" and thad wud hav been a nice contribution!

this way, ur comment sounds like ur talkin down to younger people, who were not able to interact with that platform the same way you may have done. which i dun like...

Sorry, I was being playful - not trying to be mean-spirited.

Myspace was fun to customize. Mostly just for the person doing the customizing. Everyone looking at your page was just annoyed as My Chemical Romance auto played and it started raining rainbow kittens in your browser.

[-] Paradachshund@lemmy.today 9 points 4 hours ago

MySpace let you customize the code for your page directly, so you could add all kinds of stuff. Change colors, fonts, add music, etc. There were some truly eye melting pages people made lmao

On the one hand, I love customisation, on the other I detest Discord. Argh.

[-] Smorty 8 points 11 hours ago

yea same. i hate discord. awful. ads. everywhere. dum popup exclamation points wantin my attention. dum annyoyin animations to mek me click de purchase btn. vrr bs.

bt i like the customization, cuz it pushes artists to explore new mediums! it wud not be like discord, becuz we cn customize the texutres ourselves!! nt hav to use premade ones! ~ <3 thads gud! <3

I wish user pages were more customizable on Lemmy.

it'd be so cool if they allowed custom basic html/css for the profile page, maybe it's a security concern but surely they can sanitize it enough?

[-] Smorty 3 points 11 hours ago

awwwww thank u!!!! ~ <3

now thad i kno evil gov does evil blockin stuff lik dis... yea dis catbox way is necessary now ;( (also posts dun show up as previews on blahaj anymore, so dis is the only cool way, where peeps cn see the previews.)

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
