Without us they'd be nothing, what an incredibly foolish move on their part. Fuck Eurovision

[-] dumblederp@aussie.zone 6 points 6 days ago

For 20 years now it's been my LGBTQ+ friends having euro vision watch parties.

[-] rebelflesh@lemm.ee 93 points 1 week ago

They just lost 90% viewership

[-] Azzu@lemm.ee 19 points 1 week ago

Lol, no

Most people won't ever see this news, and even then, many people wouldn't care.

[-] rebelflesh@lemm.ee 13 points 1 week ago

If there is a group of people we can trust to properly boycott shit is the Eurovision fans.

[-] Azzu@lemm.ee 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Sure, the fans... But the majority of the viewers are people like my parents, who are entertained by it for a week, don't really care all that much about anything but the national rivalry and the cool shows and music, and then it clears off their mind until the next year.

[-] jol@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 1 week ago

Lol yes of course. How they also lost when they didn't ban Israel? Eurovision doesn't care and the people don't care either.

[-] Vopyr@lemmy.world 122 points 1 week ago

But they have no problem with the flag of a country that kills dozens, hundreds of people, right? What a bunch of morons.

[-] floofloof@lemmy.ca 34 points 1 week ago

Tens or hundreds of thousands and still counting. But it is the gays that are the problem, apparently, not those who commit genocide.

[-] HappyFrog 13 points 1 week ago

All flags except the flag of the country they represent seems to be banned:

Participants are also barred from holding flags to express solidarity with other countries such as Ukraine, Palestine, or Israel.

[-] Vopyr@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Yeah, it's a shitty thing to do, but it's not the first time for the EU.

[-] Fleur_@aussie.zone 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)
[-] Saleh@feddit.org 8 points 1 week ago

That are confirmed. The real numbers are much higher as there is thousands of people who are "missing". Also if an entire family gets annihilated there is sometimes no one left to report the people as missing.

[-] OctaviaMeowzly 4 points 1 week ago

which one? Azerbaijan or Israel?

[-] Vopyr@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Israel. What's the deal with Azerbaijan?

[-] Microw@lemm.ee 9 points 1 week ago

You serious? Did you miss the Azerbaijani-Armenian war?

[-] Vopyr@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

Oh, this, of course. There's so much going on in the world and in my country that it's slipped from my mind.

[-] OctaviaMeowzly 1 points 1 week ago

is ended? (bit out the loop on that stuff)

[-] Microw@lemm.ee 3 points 1 week ago

I think they still don't have a peace treaty, but at the moment no active fighting

[-] PanArab@lemm.ee 78 points 1 week ago

They banned Russia for war crimes but not Israel. Nothing about what they ban is consistent or makes sense unless their goal is appealing to right wing fascism.

[-] cupcakezealot 4 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

kinda like how they go after kneecap for criticizing a country more than they do actually arresting a war criminal

[-] LordWiggle@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

Hey, genocide is not a war crime when the victims are a group you don't like /s

[-] Microw@lemm.ee 19 points 1 week ago

Tbf the only reason they banned the Russian broadcasters was because a big number of other EBU members were threatening with boycott if Russians were allowed to compete. Which didnt happen with Israel, where only a handful of members wanted to see them banned.

And it's pretty easy to see why it is illogical - because you have 56+ broadcasters on the deciding table, between which key personnel can change regularly.

[-] eestileib 67 points 1 week ago

Fuck Eurovision.

[-] neuracnu 56 points 1 week ago

Eurovision has seen the participation of many LGBTQ+ artists over the years, most recently, in 2024, nonbinary singer Nemo from Switzerland won the competition. Nemo revealed at the time of the competition that they were told not to bring the non-binary flag on stage, however, the artist was able to smuggle one in, according to PinkNews.

I was going to ask about Nemo and their NB flag. I had no idea that this was already an existing rule and that they were breaking rules to sneak it in. Good for them! Their song was legitimately the best one from last year, too (video).

[-] match@pawb.social 14 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

They should borrow Bambie Thug's trans flag swimsuit that fae had on-stage

[-] grue@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago
[-] jol@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 week ago

I watched the video but didn't see a flag?

[-] neuracnu 7 points 1 week ago

If I recall correctly, they had their flag at their team booth after their performance, and (maybe?) brought it on stage after the votes were finally tallied and determined them to be the winner.

I do have a strong recollection of them cheerfully waving their flag during the long vote tallying process.

[-] Microw@lemm.ee 1 points 1 week ago

Which is probably why they now want to ban all non-competing country flags from all official areas including the team booth too.

[-] cupcakezealot 50 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

cyprus should have won over israel in 2018 anyway

also lol at banning pride flags in the 69th edition of the gayest music show

iceland is gonna say fuck that

[-] Rozauhtuno 51 points 1 week ago

iceland is gonna say fuck that

They've done it before.

A picture of Hatari showing a Palestinian flag at Eurovision

[-] CaptnNMorgan@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

Is that Corey Feldman and Miles Teller?

[-] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 44 points 1 week ago

It's not a flag, it's a cape so it's ok.

[-] 1024_Kibibytes@lemm.ee 21 points 1 week ago

And a headband, and a shirt, and pants, and socks, and shoes, and glasses?

[-] Rose@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 week ago

That or just ask Bambie Thug for advice.

[-] driving_crooner@lemmy.eco.br 43 points 1 week ago

My guess? It's all about banning the Palestinian flag.

[-] alex@jlai.lu 6 points 6 days ago

Territorial flags have been banned for years, the new rule is specifically about non-territorial flags.

[-] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 40 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

“Hello, I am from Queer, specifically the municipality of Gay. I’m here to make this stage mine. By force. Here is my rendition of ultraviolence by Alex DeLarge to the beat of “Ultraviolence” by Lana Del Ray.”

[-] sunglocto@lemmy.dbzer0.com 27 points 1 week ago

Yes. Banning free expression on the contest that's for... free expression. Well done guys, liberals owned 🇺🇸👊🔥

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 24 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

the fucking churches fly pride flags here, are these churches not part of the country? hey christians, eurovision banned religious imagery!

[-] LordWiggle@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

All Christians care about is voting for Israel, even when they don't watch eurovision. That's how Israel got so many votes last year while everyone was booing so hard (even through the anti boo filters they used). There were tutorials on how and when you should vote to support Israel for Israeli and Christians. And many Christians are anti LGBTQ+ so they support this ban. Even though eurovision is as gay as you can get it.

[-] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 21 points 1 week ago

It's an absolute joke of an event anyways. I will make sure to ignore it even harder from now on.

[-] Formfiller@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago

Wow that is sad

[-] jsomae@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 week ago

This is about flags specifically. Presumably pride designs in non-flag format are fine.
