Everything I know about Newsome says that this was included in spite of him and not because of him.
I wanted to write that this guy absolutely confuses me, but I think your explanation makes more sense than him flip-flopping between good guy and asshole.
It's not that he flip flops between good or evil, he just flip flops with the change of the wind. A lot of the dislike of Newsom is that he doesn't really seem to have a backbone, and caves if something he supports at one point isn't seemingly politically advantageous.
You could frame that as following what the electorate want.
You could, and most populist politicians do, but that doesn't make it true.
Yeah, but are we talking what the Democrats want, or the Republicans? Because it seems like Newsom can't really tell the difference.
A good leader is a leader for all. In these divisive times, that's probably impossible. And certainly the a Democrat candidate should have somewhat progressive ideals. Or at least not regressive. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying this guy is a good leader or a good Democrat. Probably not. I just think the U.S. has been so starved of good leaders, the electorate wouldn't recognize one.
No, we just have far the many that are completely guided by their donations. The electorate can usually recognize them, if they even hear about them, which is getting harder given the sheer amount of money flowing around that doesn't like progressive candidates. Honestly, a good example to see it is probably the Michigan Senate primary, where Abdul El-Sayed is running against Haley Stevens, and Abdul (the very much more progressive candidate) is hopefully gonna win (wild amounts of money are being spent on Stevens, like at least 10 mil on ads thus far). The electorate isn't completely dumb, they just often have the wool pulled over their eyes by moneyed interest groups, which is why I'm always annoyed by candidates who clearly don't have central beliefs and can change their views to suit whatever they need, usually to the ones where they can get the most donations for their campaign.
Yeah, Newsome is one of the biggest LGBTQ+ ally politicians ever. There's no way he could be behind this. A guy who ordered his city hall to perform gay marriages even though it wasn't federally legal would never support this.
The guy who went on Charlie kirks podcast? whose ex married don Jr?
I'm sure he doesn't personally have a problem with cis white gays, but there's a lot of evidence he's willing to say whatever he thinks will land him the presidency.

I mean on the podcast he did say trans kids shouldnt be able to play sports.
Yes as a trans person, trans rights are my top priority how shocking.
If that's your attitude to the democratic front runner saying that trans people shouldn't be in sports, then you need to get the fuck off of blahaj instances.
Telling a trans woman she doesn't belong in a trans inclusive space just because she doesn't share your raging hate boner for a milquetoast politician is something.

You're literally not acting in good faith yourself. You're trying to disingenuously reframe all these people nitpicking things like going on a podcasts as "not putting someone on a pedestal"

Ok. So what's baffling to me is how you're defending a politician that wants to exclude both of us from parts of society. Newsom is a shiftless liar that only stands for himself, but let's say that he's honest and firm about this one aspect of his political career, and won't move any further right on this topic.
He's going to ban all of us from participating in sports. Republicans won't stop there, and will use the momentum to further oppress us. Ceding to Newsom will directly result in further oppression of us.

Trans people have to purity test when it comes to Democrats.
The harsh truth is for trans people, it's better for a Republican to win in 2028 than for an anti-trans Democrat. Republicans already hate trans folks. But if a Democrat that's like Keir Starmer gets in, then both parties will be militantly anti-trans. Trans people would be better off with four more years out of power than with both parties against them.

It's not satire. And you apparently can't think strategically. You have the electoral memory of a goldfish and can't plan more than one election cycle ahead.
Yeah, I guess letting the people that criminalize our existence stay in power is much better than compromising with a neoliberal that has some disagreeable positions on sports.

It's not just about sports. Every state that has started with sports bans has gone on to attack virtually every aspect of trans existence. Trans sports bans are unscientific - the scientific consensus is that trans women have no advantage at all in sports. Yet, Democrats like Newsom are willing to give in to this one form of unscientific bigotry. By doing so, they prove that they don't ultimately care about trans rights. Anyone who willingly gives in once to irrational, unscientific bigotry based purely out of animus will surely do so again.
And once you do that once. Once you cross that line, you are damned.
Is it rational to restrict bathroom use because some bigoted women "feel unsafe"? No, but if you've given into one form of unscientific bigotry, you'll do it again.
Is it reasonable to restrict minors from life-saving healthcare? No, but once you've decided that trans lives aren't worth protecting, then you'll do it again.
Every time Republicans decide to raise a stink in their echo chambers about some newly intolerable aspect of trans life, a Democrat like Newsom will support legislation restricting our lives out of a "reasonable compromise." They just have to get a few bigoted cis women to go on camera and say they feel unsafe, and Democrats like Newsom will support any neo Jim Crow law Republicans are proposing.
You are seriously not appreciating the grave risk of someone like Newsom. You're focused only on the election in front of you, but you're missing that we could quite easily end up with two political parties, each trying to criminalize our existence. An anti-trans Democrat winning the nomination in 2028 would do that. I'll take four more years of Republicans than having both parties be as bad as the Republicans. (And right now, Labour in the UK are just as bad as Republicans. Democrats could easily go that way.)
This isn't about sports. This isn't about just the next election. You need to learn to consider the broader picture and not just focus on the shiny keys being jangled in front of you. Short-term thinking is what's gotten us into this mess in the first place.

Exactly. That's why we have to oppose Newsom. Liberals love him because even though he'll kill some trans folks, he'll slightly raise income taxes on billionaires (who don't earn their money through ordinary income anyway.)
Newsom will not reverse any of Trump's anti-trans policies. That's what this comes down to for me. I changed my passport years ago, and had the foresight to renew it before Trump came to power. So our passports are good through the second Trump term. But I will have to renew my passport during the next term, and under current policies, the gender marker on my passport will be reverted to an "M."
Newsom will not change this policy. Why would he? He doesn't consider trans rights worth fighting for. He won't help trans people if there's the slightest chance of it making him unpopular among bigots.
So, Newsom or JD Vance (or whatever Republican)? Ultimately both of those people are going to deeply hurt me as a trans person. With Vance, there's at least a chance of things getting better in 2032. With Newsom? I won't get my rights back until I die of old age.
Again, you need to think more than one cycle ahead.
The same biggest ally that killed investigations into sexual harassment at Activision after hefty campaign donations and vetoed a bill that would have allowed trans people to stockpile hormones? The same biggest ally that said he was totally aligned with Charlie Kirk on trans kids in sports? Wowee! With him on the case, queer liberation must only be days away!
You mean the unsubstantiated accusation that he interfered in that trial?
No. I mean the time that he, according to folks who worked for him at the time (2022), prevented them doing their jobs at the Department of Fair Employment and Housing.
