- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

All streamers are trash so it's always pleasurable to see any of them being taken down for being the assholes they are.
(This is in reference to the guy who is shocking his dog, not the woman who was assaulted, which wouldn't have happened if Twitch allowed people to bring their own private security. I think streamers are trash but that justifies critiquing them not assaulting them.)

Except it wasn't a shock collar and she wasn't even wearing that collar during the clip that started the outrage. I don't like nor watch Hassan, but that's bullshit.

Yeah I think Hasan handled the whole thing poorly, that combined with him constantly stereotyping anarchists and vegans to sacrificially throw under the bus have caused me to take a break from his stream for a bit due to bad taste in my mouth. But the whole issue itself was absolutely a manufactured character hit. Too many leftists demand heroes who are virtuous in every conceivable way and get outraged when they're not, but people like that literally do not exist. Not a single person is like that. I'll be back to watching Hasan in a bit because while he's wrong a lot, he's right a whole lot more. And the more viable left punditry becomes, the more leftist pundits we'll get to push the social overton window back the other way.
He got mad at the dog for doing #1 most common thing that dogs do and then didn't care when the dog seemed distressed. She was in fact forced to sit still as a camera prop - you know, most dog owners would check what stresses the dog out. It's not even about the goddamn collar, it's about how the living being is treated as a toy.
But what if Hasan responded with "umm, thank you for your concern, that was not what happened, but maybe it is true I shouldn't lock the dog in a single small place" instead of calling people stupid for caring for his pet seemingly more than he does. He got resources to make the dog the happiest one in the city, but why would he even think about that.
It's just upsetting, is all, all I want to see is that first shred of humility we never saw from him despite numerous fuckups, this case being different because it's not about dumb internet things anymore, but an actual living creature
That's not what happened. Kiya was not shocked, he did check on her after, Kiya gets hours of daily exercise, and is allowed to come or go from her cot as she wants.

I'm going to try to be objective here and add perspective as a dog owner
after she yelped, he immediately froze and looked at her for a few seconds, during which nothing was visibly wrong and she showed no signs of distress. things like this happen with dogs, I've done the exact same thing countless times with my dogs behind me at my workstation for various reasons, some of which were random yelps.
with the situation determined to not be of immediate concern, you don't need to go do a thorough review of the dog right away. you can do that a bit later. if the dog is hurt, they'll show it.
do I think the effort that goes into keeping her on the cot is a little weird? yeah. but I don't have experience with big dogs, and I don't think it's an issue to tell your dog to stay in their place rather than somewhere else in the room, they'll be happy either way. my dog will get up off her bed and plop herself down under my rolling chair without me noticing, then freak out when I move because a tiny bit of fur got caught in the wheels, so I tell them to stay farther away or will slide them away from the chair
Okay, maybe that's fair, but you can obviously see why the clip has upset people. Im tired of the topic, but what upsets me more is that Hasan defenders, and also he himself, use dismissal as the main tactic, and like, no, people are not stupid for having empathy, even when they got too much of it (If you think such a thing is possible). Dismissal also (obviously, as one of the favorite tools of abusers) makes people suspicious. Should people be suspicious in this particular case? I dunno, my point is that these are completely rational feelings to have

The timing couldn't really have been worse for him, but I agree that it was probably just an unfortunate coincidence. I definitely would have physically walked over to my pets if they yelped like that, though.

is it because streamers ask for donations? because they play games as a job? i'm genuinely curious.
It's more there's such a over prevalence of pedophiles, groomers and general other assholes among the largest circles of streamers and YouTubers. That they all get washed with the same brush which is not fair to many such as RTGame.
But it's also the profession at it's highest levels isn't actually playing games as a job. It's being a talk show entertainer. That's WHAT streaming is.
The video game is the stand in for the guest stars.
There is an inherent disingenuity to the whole performance. At least at the upper levels. While streaming may have started off as just gamer sharing their gameplay and what not, it's very much not the reality of what it is anymore.
That's why it's not fair to paint everybody as an asshole just because they're a streamer. It is genuinely fair to be distrustful of pretty much every streamer. So long as you're keeping in mind that not everyone is an asshole even if they are in a horrible industry.
It's a mentally toxic industry after all. Any form of parasocial entertainment is inherently toxic.
I'll ignore how dumb the rest of this take is but she did bring her own private security. Her own security guy is the one who got the perpetrator off of her, while event security did nothing and also failed at securing the meet and greet properly in the first place.
In general con security seems to be terrible almost across the board. Absolutely not equipped for how big internet personalities have gotten, it's mostly in "we're just a bunch of nerds having our niche event" mode even for events where that's decidedly no longer the case. And for twitchcon that's not even the tiniest bit of an excuse since it's organized by one of the largest tech companies in the world.
