In theory yes, in practice, no.

Nostr uses relays. In some ways, a relay is like an instance on the fediverse. Where they differ though, is that a) relays don't talk to each other and b) users can sign up to many different relays and pull/push content to all of them.

So in practice, in order to see a wide amount of content, you need to end up connecting to multiple relays. And even though a relay does have some moderation capabilities to block content, unless every relay you use blocks the content from the bigoted account, you'll see it.

If you signed up only to a single relay, and that relay had good moderation, then in theory, your Nostr experience wouldn't be terrible, but a single niche relay like that will mean you see basically no content. And as soon as you connect to a larger public relay to get more content, you lose all of the moderation advantages offered by your first instance. Which means in practice, there is no incentive to run a well moderated instance.

And so all of the moderation ends up on the end user, who has to manually block accounts only after they appear and dump their load of hate (at which point, the bigot will just spin up another account). Some people prefer that experience, but when you're the regular target of hate, that approach just doesn't work for many folk.

I don't know, it looks kinda swampy to me...

I left when it became clear they had no interest in dealing with nazi sympathisers, and when it became clear that transphobia was acceptable, as long as it was "civil". This was long before the Reddit API exodus

I found lemmy when looking for fediverse/federated Reddit like platforms, and spun up an instance to test it out. It was basically only me on the instance until the Reddit exodus happened, and then suddenly the instance and lemmy add a whole saw a huge growth in traffic.

And then we spun up a piefed instance when it became clear the lemmy devs also hold some shitty beliefs, so that users who wanted an alternative could have one.

I'm not going anywhere. Federated/decentralised social media is the future as far as I'm concerned. At the very least, it's the only future I'll consider.

I have a child old enough to vote

That isn't what I'm asking for, I'm asking for the censure to be updated with evidence from the instance itself.

I haven't updated anything in fediseer for probably close to a year. And if you look at the size of our censure list, I'm unlikely to be adding verifiable evidence for all of those sites, if for no other reason than I don't want to visit most of them.

Yet whatever my reasons, the fact I've posted it without evidence is something you should use when deciding how much trust to place in my censure, though I think the real trigger should be the number of censures.

That should be what gets you to look at the instance and decide for yourself whether you agree with the censures. If you can't find evidence to confirm them, or if you don't agree with them, you don't take any action.

I don't trust you, because you have said the same thing about me

And to be honest, I don't even know what you said. The posts were made 2 years ago, are now permanently deleted, and were removed by a moderator on an instance that doesn't exist anymore. I'll remove the ban

You really need to listen to what you're saying.

You're arguing for the right to deny people their own identities in their own safe spaces whilst claiming that somehow, the real issue is letting queer folk choose the language that works best for them.

Is blahaj drama free?

I hope not.

We're an explicitly protective, safe space for a minority group that is actively targeted by governments, political institutions, churches, and bigots in general

So of course we create drama. Bigots will make sure of it.

He was banned from blahaj for literally just showing up and saying reasonable things. If that's against the rules of your instance

Nah. He was banned for repeatedly, deliberately, and knowingly breaking the rules. Whether or not you think gatekeeping someones identity is acceptable, blahaj.zone has rules against it, and his response to it was to deliberately break the rules and stir up shit.

A lot of people feel like, if they think something reasonable, they're allowed to say it, and it's weird and controlling for some other person to say that opinion is the incorrect opinion and demand that they not say it within certain spaces.

Tough shit. When someones "reasonable" opinion involves positioning themselves as the arbiter of other folks validity and identity, they're doing harm. When they choose to repeatedly and deliberately do that in a safe space for those folk, they're repeatedly and deliberately doing harm and breaking the rules.

All of which to say, even if you're a gatekeeper like him, who thinks that you have the right to tell other people their own identities, if you come in to a blahaj community and do it, you're breaking blahaj rules. If you choose to knowingly and repeatedly do it, whilst then complaining about it in various meta spaces, then you're breaking rules and stirring up drama.

A trans person is even more aware of how shitty a situation that is, which means, when they tell you their name, they're aware of the consequences and are telling you what feels appropriate for them. The best thing you can do is trust them, and follow their lead.

We don't require email verification. There is no email. This seems to be a stubborn bug to iron out though, because I would swear the PieFed dev fixed it...

So, a few years back, when my kid was 13 or so, I used to send them memes over discord. This was 6 or 7 years ago now. And I thought, I'm a cool mum, 'cause I use discord to talk to my kid, and I send them memes.

And one day, I asked my kid if I'm one of the cool parents, 'cause I send them memes, and they said "You send me old memes". Their friends thought I was cool but my kid? Nah, not so much...

In all seriousness though, my kid is 20 now, and I have a great relationship with them. Don't read too much in to it. I don't think there's any winning with young teens and pre teens. You'll never be cool in their eyes, and I think we just have to find our peace with that :)

If that happens organically with enough communities, then it might be something we consider, but I'm not going to push people to uproot their communities if they don't have to.
