Parent your goddamn children.

[-] daddycool@lemmy.world 53 points 5 hours ago

That's not a children problem. That's a parents problem.

[-] Psythik@lemmy.world 18 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Seriously, just toss the little shit into the seat and buckle them up. Why is this so difficult for some parents to do? Kids weigh next to nothing; just pick them up and force them to comply.

Edit: Downvoted by two bad parents who are afraid to control their children.

[-] nullspace@lemmy.world 12 points 4 hours ago

They can tie down unruly adult passengers before they're arrested, but they can't restrain a kid climbing over seats?

[-] Avicenna@programming.dev 2 points 2 hours ago

and some others considered parenting licenses

[-] Madzielle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 4 hours ago

"join us" wierdos.

Not the kids fault, the parents should have stepped off the flight when the problem arised.

[-] Vreyan31@reddthat.com 4 points 2 hours ago

It doesn't sound like the parent is the reason why the whole plane had to disembark.

My guess is that the airline doesn't have a process that allows them to fetch just one passenger's luggage from the plane - that they have to unload all of it, find the bag, and reload. And that the airline requires the flight to be cancelled to accomplish that - probably because of the time involved.

Clusterfuck all around.

[-] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

I thought flight crews had dart guns for this kind of situation.

[-] _lilith@lemmy.world 13 points 6 hours ago

I have a vivid memory of a parental figure placing a hand on the back of my neck and like pinching the fingers super hard when I was doing dumb shit. Is that not a thing anymore?

[-] TemplaerDude@sh.itjust.works 22 points 5 hours ago

Child abuse? No typically it’s advised against.

[-] Martin@lemmy.ml 5 points 5 hours ago

Sure, we know what not to do, but do we also know what we should do instead then? Sometimes you need kids to comply within a certain time frame and that's going to require some pressure one way or the other and no, it's not going to scar them for life

[-] zalgotext@sh.itjust.works 8 points 4 hours ago

You talk to them. You tell them what's going down. You give them details. Children are not animals. They can listen, understand, speak, hold a conversation. If you need them to do something specific, in a certain time frame, for a certain reason, you tell them.

I feel like people underestimate the mental faculties of kids all the time. If you treat them with respect and just talk to them, you usually don't have to resort to abuse tactics.

[-] brygphilomena@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 58 minutes ago

Kids are smart. But they don't always have the same thought process as adults. There have to be consequences for actions. And a stern talking to just isn't going to cut it for a lot of kids.

Punishments like spanking give an immediate reinforcement and I wouldn't consider that abuse.

Different situations require different ways to handle kids. On an airplane where the kid won't sit still, I would certainly consider something immediate that doesn't need a lengthy explanation.

[-] almost1337@lemmy.zip 9 points 4 hours ago

"Just talking to them" doesn't always work (e.g. toddlers, children with pathological demand avoidance, etc), but I agree that abuse is still never the answer.

[-] zalgotext@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 hours ago

Sure, no solution is perfect and there's exceptions to every rule.

But the original question is "what options do I have aside from abusing my kid?", and while "just talk to them" is an oversimplified answer, I feel it's an appropriate response to such a thickheaded question.

[-] Martin@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 hours ago

Usually yes, and I will acknowledge that skipping this step is showing laziness or incompetence, but I don't think children are already reasonable, especially when they're tired (this happened late in the evening) and already committed to throwing a tantrum. And in this case the whole situation might have been already stressful for the parents anyway, which doesn't help. Probably they should have talked about it more way before they entered the plane, and prepared the kid for what was going to happen. And maybe they did. But the situation then being what it is I think options can be very limited, and there probably wasn't much time to try reasoning with the kid

[-] Malyca@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 hours ago

I could see my autistic son doing this, but I'd get off the plane if that happened

[-] daychilde@lemmy.world 8 points 7 hours ago

"Join us"?

People do start out not having kids, so to "join us" would mean........ they have kids AND GET RID OF THEM. (ಠ_ಠ)

[-] some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

Anti-natalism is a cult. These insufferable pricks make not having children their entire personality, and tell themselves they're superior for it, because they have nothing better to offer.

[-] nimble 4 points 2 hours ago

You're conflating childfree with anti-natalism. I'm childfree because id be a shit parent. If you want to have kids then more power to you. Just don't make it your whole personality like those anti-natalists you're so fond of.

[-] Thorry@feddit.org 146 points 12 hours ago

This has nothing to do with the child and everything to do with the parents.

[-] The_v@lemmy.world 30 points 9 hours ago

Remember the only qualification to become a parent is functional gonads. No education, training, or proof of competency and aptitude is required.

Which is why shit parents often resort to physically assaulting their children. It's because the are too ignorant of actual parenting techniques and methods to know otherwise.

"My parents spanked me and I turned out fine"...

No you fucking idiot, you did not turn out fine. You are beating a helpless child because you don't know shit about parenting.

[-] meco03211@lemmy.world 15 points 9 hours ago

I got spanked and I turned out fine. And by that I mean I'm not having kids cause fuck all that noise.

[-] Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 4 points 7 hours ago

This is the single best argument for abortion. If the idiots of the world cannot be trusted to have children, we should let them get rid of them before they become everyone's problem without question.

I, personally, hope there are "wellfare queens who get weekly abortions" because thats better than this fictional racist strawman being forced to have a kid

[-] rottenmummy@lemmy.ml 29 points 11 hours ago

Abso fucking lutely

[-] waitingtech@lemmy.world 28 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

In the end, there are some pretty large questions:

  1. How much did this cost (presumably) the airline?
  2. Who pays?
  3. Are the culprits (mother & son) on a no-fly list now?

If the answer to # 2 is us through elevated ticket prices then it's a problem. It either takes a village to raise a child and pay for their mistakes therefore societal norms are individually enforceable, or, it is exclusively the parents responsibility to raise the child and pay for the mistakes. It must be one or the other, there is no in-between.

[-] CuddlyCassowary@lemmy.world 74 points 12 hours ago

Why wasn’t the family just escorted off the plane? Canceling the whole flight seems excessive.

[-] socsa@piefed.social 3 points 4 hours ago

I'm surprised the family made it out of there in one piece. No jury would convict you for taking that sucker punch.

[-] destructdisc@lemmy.world 118 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

They were.

Porter said the aircraft returned to the terminal, where the passengers (as in the kid and the accompanying parent) were asked to leave the plane and their baggage was removed. The airline said the additional time required to complete those steps and refile the flight plan meant the flight could not depart before Victoria International Airport’s (YYJ) runway closed at 12:30 a.m. As a result, the flight was cancelled.

[-] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 7 points 6 hours ago

I'd lose my shit, especially if I had a connection to catch

[-] Smaile@lemmy.ca 10 points 7 hours ago

Wow, I'd be livid

[-] CuddlyCassowary@lemmy.world 29 points 12 hours ago

Oh thanks! I didn’t even notice the link to the actual article. Not quite awake yet…

[-] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago

It's times like this where it should be legal to just straight up lunch the parents.

Another appropriate time is At a brewery where the kids grab 4 board games, dump them over a table trying to play then abandoning them so they can run up and down the corn hole boards while throwing the bags at each other

[-] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 hours ago

Cannibalism seems a bit extreme.

[-] Crashumbc@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Shrug, tastes like pork

[-] jdr@lemmy.ml 23 points 11 hours ago

That child totally alpha'd everyone hard. He got his way and 150 losers didn't. Future president.

[-] socsa@piefed.social 6 points 4 hours ago

Plane mogged sum boomers today no cap

[-] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 35 points 12 hours ago

Family couldn't sit him down, put the seatbelt on, and hold his hands on an armrest so he can't un-buckle? Must be one strong kid.

[-] ICastFist@programming.dev 57 points 11 hours ago

Or, the more likely explanation, the parents are permissive shits who think they should never make little timmy uncomfortable

[-] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 5 points 6 hours ago

And it's everyone else's kids who are inconveniencing them

[-] tyranny@crazypeople.online 2 points 7 hours ago

that's kevin from home alone you're talking about

[-] StinkySocialist@lemmy.ml 6 points 11 hours ago

They can't just kick that family off? If I was another passenger I'd have a vendetta against that kid's parents.

[-] Stern@lemmy.world 19 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

https://globalnews.ca/news/12014261/porter-flight-cancelled-after-child-refused-to-wear-seatbelt-for-takeoff/

tldr: they did, by the time the family and their luggage was removed the runway had closed for the night.

[-] StinkySocialist@lemmy.ml 4 points 10 hours ago
