And then you leave it to seed for months, right? Right?

[-] Gormadt@slrpnk.net 50 points 5 days ago

Of course

It shall live on on my seedbox until the seedbox dies

I hope to someday achieve a ratio as magnificent as yours.

Thank you for your service o7

Don't let your dreams just be dreams!

Setup a seedbox to chill in the corner and you too can achieve a magnificent ratio!

I have a decent amount of things I'd like to seed 24/7, I just need to take some time learn how to go about it.

[-] Gormadt@slrpnk.net 4 points 3 days ago

My first seedbox was literally an old office PC (that I got from an electronics recycler) with a chonky HDD in it running Ubuntu and sharing it's drive on my network. Was it ideal? Hell no lol I literally had an old 10inch LCD screen, keyboard, and mouse that I had to leave hooked up to it as I couldn't figure out out how to dial into it remotely.

I learned a lot since then but NGL the old setup was so simple I miss it sometimes lol

I have an old and slightly niche/obscure PC that I use for media hosting etc. and it works quite well.

Months are but neatly stacked piles of days in the chaos of years, the place decades gather on centuries like dust on a millennium.

I only stop seeding when space runs out. 26TB to go!

I seed until the ratio is 1.2 or two weeks. I'd seed for indefinite but my NAS has 250GB and ssd prices are through the roof, so I need space. My ratio is over 1 so I don't feel too guilty about it.

There needs to be a holiday or a month where everybody seeds old shit every year or every few years.

There's A ton of old stuff that I'm waiting on. Old fansub anime that was super popular but isn't anymore because it's licensed on streaming or official blurays came out, but has karaoke and translators notes and is the same stuff I watched growing up. It's all but lost media at this point because everybody that archived it has it on offline hdds and probably doesn't expect anybody to want it.

So if there was a known sharing period for obscure old torrents to be reseeded, that would be awesome. That way, people could check in for a week or a month every year. It would be like torrent Christmas. Lostormas.

[-] Cassa 3 points 4 days ago

Have you tried finding the .ass file? I know lots of old fansubs groups shared those. Might be a bit easier to find, hell maybe even on archived versions of their websites 🤔

[-] SCmSTR 1 points 4 days ago

But not all of them, especially on the ones I want, which specifically didn't release ass files because the visual stuff was really hard to do softsubs and so hardsubbed everything. But also, that's a good idea, where available.

I like your holiday idea

This literally just happened to me. It's feels so damn great, I was holding on with no hope

[-] Gormadt@slrpnk.net 10 points 5 days ago

I was literally gonna give it this weekend as a last hold out before giving up, but now that it's finished I'm gonna leave it on my seedbox until the seedbox dies.

As a Usenet user this meme hit me like a nostalgia wave from 15 years ago

[-] driving_crooner@lemmy.eco.br 4 points 4 days ago

I had a Torrent sit for years at 99.5%. Then one day I checked it again and I had a ratio of like 10 on it. At some moment that 0.5% got online I completed the torrent and because I had forgotten about it, I was the only 100% seeding for months. It was a Norwegian movie about some guys lost after a snow storm. Pretty good but can't remember the name now.

[-] Gormadt@slrpnk.net 3 points 3 days ago

Seeding those obscure pieces of media to hella high ratios is always nice, sometimes you've just gotta find an old piece of media and that 1 seeder whose been seeding it for 10 years is like a breathe of fresh air

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
