Had honestly expected the game to have been nuked to the ground by Nintendo by now. Glad it survived! May have to revisit it!

[-] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 4 points 6 days ago

I am figuring on playing Palworld again about a month after launch. Modders will have some work to do to bring their stuff up to date, dealing with the influx of players, week 1 super-patching, and so forth. Gotta let such teething issues of a launch to be ironed out.

In particular, I want to have gliding pals and pokeball throwing back again.

[-] actualaccount@sopuli.xyz 1 points 6 days ago

I am a Palworld enjoyer.

[-] HeyJoe@lemmy.world 55 points 1 week ago

This game just finished? Guess I should revisit, it's been years. I thought it released a while ago.

[-] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 28 points 1 week ago

It was in Early Access phase the whole time. Compared to AAA publisher, they had declared this game not being finished yet.

[-] Zahille7@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

The whole two years. Such a long early access period.

[-] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 22 points 1 week ago

Yeah, some other games / publisher are even longer in Early Access. But at least it is correctly advertised as such and not a scam like AAA games who does not declare themselves as Early Access. To me its only fair.

[-] Landless2029@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

Looking at you Ark...

[-] Joelk111@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

Not really. I would consider 2 years pretty average. Some games get abandoned in less time, some are in early access for double the time. Some games are basically complete and are only in early access for a few months. I don't have a problem with any approach, as long as the game is getting worked on of course.

[-] Zahille7@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Like Going Medieval. Came out in June 2021 and had 5 years of steady regular content updates.

[-] Kritix@fedia.io 7 points 1 week ago

Yeaa, it's been a while. I played it at launch so I guess it's time to revisit Palworld again.

[-] Einhornyordle@feddit.org 45 points 1 week ago

Palworld has now sold more copies than the original Pokémon Gen 1 (Red, Green, and Blue), which is still the best selling Pokémon generation with 31 Million copies sold.

[-] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 27 points 1 week ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Palworld is multiplatform, so it reaches Steam that is 150 millions alone, ~~Switch 150 millions~~ (Edit: Sorry, Switch port never happened!) and PS4 90 millions. Compared to the 118 million Game Boys (including Color). Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to mud their success, just putting some numbers into perspective. It is fantastic to see how well Palworld does. And it did even survive an attack from Nintendo's Ninjas (Palworld was sued by Nintendo)!

[-] k0e3@lemmy.ca 3 points 6 days ago
[-] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 2 points 6 days ago

Oh my! I don't know why I thought it came out on Switch. Its unlikely, because of the legal action from Nintendo. If the game was on the eshop, it would mean Nintendo is okay with the game. I remember the devs talked they can imagine it being released on the Switch or Switch 2. That was before Nintendo sued the company.

It short, my bad and now that many people saw my reply they might think it happened... Sorry everyone!

[-] missphant 17 points 1 week ago

All they have to do is launch the next Pokémon on Steam and it's all theirs again. :')

[-] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 14 points 1 week ago

For Nintendo, Pokemon is more than just raw numbers for the games themselves. It is a system seller by being exclusive, a core Nintendo strategy. And the most money from Pokemon isn't even made by the games themselves, but from merchandise and other licensing around this IP. But what I could see Nintendo doing someday is, releasing a game that is not mainline Pokemon and its sole purpose is to "advertise" Pokemon on other platforms like Steam. They tried it already on mobile. Maybe release the mobile games on Steam too, like this strange Super Mario Bros game on Android.

[-] Faaaaaaa@piefed.social 4 points 1 week ago

It's not sales it's players. When Palworld came out it was on gamepass, no clue if it still is but I know that is how my friends and I played it on release and never bought it.

[-] creamfresh@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Palworld has nothing to do with Pokémon so I don’t understand the comparison.

[-] LemmyTellYou@lemmy.cafe 39 points 1 week ago

I’m not disputing that Palworld isn’t popular, but I hate when companies advertise with “40M players”

40M purchases is fine, which is very impressive for a paid game. If I buy a game, never play it or play it once, then I’m not ‘playing’ that game.

[-] Novamdomum@fedia.io 19 points 1 week ago

I knew this annoying dude who would always confidently declare that Pocketpair were doomed and that Nintendo was just waiting for the perfect time to completely destroy them. I don't know why, but he seemed to almost look forward to that, it was weird.

[-] omarfw@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

imagine glazing Nintendo that hard. absolute weirdo behavior.

[-] QuandaleDingle@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago

Because he's a rabid Pokémon fan? Sounds about right. XD

[-] SleepyPie@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Apparently game fans in Japan and Korea are culturally opposed to any form of game mimicry. They were decidedly on Nintendo’s side and were rooting for pocketpair’s downfall.

Which is weird because I feel like every game is “x game but with y”, but online spaces love to form one correct opinion and drown out all other perspectives.

[-] ParlimentOfDoom@piefed.zip 2 points 1 week ago

Because the 3 or so patent suits they filled against them weren't the perfect time... Even after ex post facto filing for these patents and this somehow being allowed under Japanese patent law

[-] LostWanderer@fedia.io 17 points 1 week ago

I can't wait to play the 1.0 version, its a better game than I thought initially. Just gotta transfer my current pals into that machine to retrieve them in the new world. Can't wait till Friday!

[-] theOneTrueSpoon@feddit.uk 5 points 1 week ago

Can we still use our old saves in 1.0? I kinda want to start a new game but I'm so used to flying around on my jetdragon, I don't think I'll be able to go back to walking everywhere! It'll take quite a while before I'll be able to craft the item you need to ride them if I start over

[-] ryathal@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 week ago

You can use the same save file. The devs did recommend starting over though as a lot has changed. You can use the global palbox to store pals you want to transfer between saves.

[-] theOneTrueSpoon@feddit.uk 5 points 1 week ago

I might just bite the bullet then. Maybe I'll build my first base in a more sensible location this time!

[-] Simon_Shitewood@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago
[-] theOneTrueSpoon@feddit.uk 3 points 1 week ago

Where would the least sensible place to build a base be? 🤔

[-] TechieDamien@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago
[-] theOneTrueSpoon@feddit.uk 2 points 1 week ago

I like the way you think

[-] LostWanderer@fedia.io 2 points 1 week ago

You can if you want too, but like another commentor mentioned there have been major changes done to the world for the 1.0. You'd be playing at a disadvantage. I decided to start over because my first base was pretty inefficiently placed and it was a bitch to realistically move the first time. I decided that starting over with a clean slate but easy to retrieve pals is better.

[-] theOneTrueSpoon@feddit.uk 2 points 1 week ago

Yeah, I guess I will start over. I haven't really been following it so I'm not sure what changes they've made but I guess I'll find out tomorrow

[-] LostWanderer@fedia.io 3 points 1 week ago

I kinda fell off a little bit because if I poured too much time in an early access game...I was concerned that I wouldn't want to play it at 1.0. Played enough to get a good understanding that the game is actually great, and there is countless hours of fun to be had starting tomorrow!

[-] theOneTrueSpoon@feddit.uk 3 points 6 days ago

I hope you enjoy playing it once the update is out!

[-] LostWanderer@fedia.io 3 points 6 days ago

I already started a new world in the new update as they released it based on Japanese time, so it came out at around 11pm my time last night. The game feels smoother, and I got my first base established fairly fast.

[-] theOneTrueSpoon@feddit.uk 1 points 5 days ago

Oh nice! Have you noticed any other big changes?

[-] LostWanderer@fedia.io 2 points 5 days ago

Well, there is an actual story...The initial boss fights don't feel impossible anymore! You can actually face the first one around level 17 or so. The bosses still feel threatening without being pain sponges that were hard to burn down. It is achievable in the 5:00 timer the player is given to beat them with leveled but not super optimized Pals. There is a lot more structure story wise, naturally because that was one of the things which they were waiting on implementing for 1.0. I noticed that Pal distributions are different, I am encountering Mozzarina a lot sooner as an occasional spawn. I caught a few already for my farming base.

The base upgrade quests are different as they changed when certain techs are unlocked and learned, making it take a bit longer than normal. At least according to my hazy memory (took me longer to unlock two bases).

I'm gonna start anew a private server. My group of friends played the hell out of this for months until there was nothing else to do. I kept playing just building new bases, it was my jam. We decided to give it a pause and retake the game after 1.0. Now's the time, we're starting from scratch and I already have an idea for a new base on top of the massive stone pillars in the central part of the island. Can't wait for tomorrow!!

[-] RogueBanana@piefed.zip 6 points 1 week ago

Palworld tomorrow, Scrap mechanic on 24th and Valheim on September. Super excited for coming months.

[-] futurefossil@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Scrap Mechanic... is alive?

[-] RogueBanana@piefed.zip 2 points 6 days ago

We are all suprised, they just announced chapter 2 and full release in beginning of this month.

Have there been a ton of big content changes since the EA launch?

I know they changed a ton of features like pet mounts and pokeball throwing due to morally reprehensible, anticompetitive nin lawsuits. That stuff can be modded back in - but I looked at a recent map and wasn't sure how much it's really changed over time or how many new things have been added.

What i'm hoping for is substantial improvements to base management and the metagame, along with loads of new pals. The bosses also seemed kind of weird compared to the rest of the game so changes to that / the story would be huge improvements for me too.

I guess I should look this stuff up.

[-] Transparent_knoll@awful.systems 5 points 1 week ago

Apparently there have been so many changes listed in v1 patch notes, that they reached the announcement limit on Steam.
