I'm about 30 hours into Fallout 76 so far and I'm surprised how much I am enjoying it. There's a lot of unique locations and creatures that make exploring fun. The MMO part of the game isn't super blatant outside of the microtransactions for skins and certain items. When I do come across other players it's usually because I stumbled into their camp and we just emote at each other a couple times before I move on. I don't think there is a way to actually talk with other players outside. I think there might be voice chat but I haven't tried it. The story seems pretty shallow though and mostly done through terminal entries and notes. I haven't really felt compelled to follow the main story line. I've been slowly working my way East then South doing miscellaneous quests along the way and exploring.

I'll probably play at least another 30 hours. I am not too sure how grindy late game quests will be. It costs caps to fast travel and they aren't as easy to come across as they are in Fallout 4 so if quests objectives have me wandering back and forth across long distances I've already explored I could see that getting tiring in a hurry for example.

The only bug I've come across was being unable to move sporadically in the over world and consistently being unable to move indoors. It turns out this was due to my high FPS and I needed to cap it using AMD Chill.

I do wonder what was added in the Wastelanders DLC and how the game was before it.

TL:DR I'd say it's worth picking up on sale and if you want to explore a bit. It doesn't feel as deep as other Fallout games but it's something.

Does anyone here want to play together? I'm on PC and mostly wandering around exploring but keep dumping most of my ammo into Sheepsquatchs. If you do want to play together shoot me a message and I'll give you my Steam ID.

Hey everybody. I checked the communities rules but didn't see anything about promotion. I'll keep it brief and post this only once. This is also re-post, I originally posted on Reddit before I learned about lemmy and created an account.

Our stream team at CloudheartTV is excited to announce that Fallout: Georgia, our custom Fallout TTRPG campaign, is now being livestreamed on Twitch — and we have two open slots for players who want to dive into the ruins, radiation, and ragged hope of the Southern Wastes!

Whether you're a seasoned player or a new wastelander, you're welcome to watch, chat, and maybe even join the campaign!

What We're About

  • Homebrew-Adjusted Fallout 2d20 System — new items, personal AP pool, grid-based combat, we are building our own faction leadership system as well
  • Custom Georgia Setting — unique factions, locations, and lore
  • Live on Twitch — character-focused gameplay, community-driven, and we stream for charity
  • Roleplay Focused — We love character flaws, epiphanies, disagreements and emergent discussions from ya'll's interactions.

Setting Summary: The Wastes of Georgia

Two centuries after the bombs fell, 2289, Georgia has become a land of broken cities, overgrown wilderness, and a fledgling nation of corporations banded together, born from the ashes.

🛠 Major Events:

  • The Red Fog Disaster — A chemical-cloud catastrophe devastated Solstice City (once Stone Mountain), leaving factions scrambling to fill the power vacuum.
  • Vault 121 Memory Experiments — Dixie-Wasteland survivors grapple with the fallout of memory alteration projects designed to control their populations.
  • The Flesh-Forge Threat — A horrifying technology capable of reshaping organic matter into monstrous living weapons lurked in the Wastes, before being destroyed by the heroes.

⚔️ Factions:

  • The Dixie Trade Authority (DTA) — Rebuilding civilization with trade, laws, and uneasy alliances between 3 major wasteland caravan companies.
  • The Dreamers — Followers of pre-war civil rights ideals, seeking a better, freer world.
  • The New Confederacy — A militant, regressive force clinging to a distorted vision of the past.
  • The Ramblers — Engineers and scavengers who see technology as the path to survival.
  • The Duat — An militant faction of "Meta-Ghouls" led by the mysterious Lord Osiris, from New Egypt out west, seeking to transcend ghoulification and reshape humanity itself through ancient rituals and scientific sorcery.
  • The Brotherhood of Steel (East Coast Chapter) — Under the leadership of Elder Arthur Maxson, the East Coast Brotherhood wages an escalating war against Dixieland to secure technology and enforce its vision of order.
  • The TrapStars Raider Gang — Ruthless raiders from Macon’s prison and ruins, known for toxic chems, colorful tags, and an obsession with fame, fortune, and terrorizing the Wastes.
  • The Pass-a-Cannies — A bizarre cult based out of the ruins of Pasaquan, clad in tinfoil and dedicated to "the Electro-Mag," with a few among them demonstrating eerie psychic gifts.

I was wandering what you people think about this one.

Personal I agree on the main points, I loved New Vegas put never finished Fallout 4.

EDIT

Since so far nobody has bothered to watch the video (and I don't blame anybody for it... It's a long ass video), I asked Ai to give us a summary.

Introduction and Initial Impressions

The Fallout series has a history of inconsistent quality, with games like Fallout 1 and 2 being masterpieces, while Fallout 3 was a 3D game with a new world to explore, and Fallout New Vegas being a great comeback to the series' quality 00:31.

Fallout 4's story is a confusing mess, with a bizarre and unengaging plot that fails to materialize into anything meaningful, despite having the building blocks of a good game 02:05.

The game's introduction, where the player character enters a vault and is frozen in cryogenic sleep, is poorly designed and full of nonsensical elements, such as the vault's entrance being exposed to the outside and the player character being expected to respond rationally to orders after being thawed out 03:40.

The game Fallout 4 has a fully voiced main character, which limits role-playing options and forces players into a predetermined emotional response 09:48.

The conversation options in Fallout 4 are limited and often don't match the character's actual dialogue, making it difficult for players to role-play effectively 12:15.

Story and Narrative

The game's story takes place in a post-apocalyptic Boston, where the player must navigate various factions, including the Minutemen and the Institute, to find their missing son 12:43.

The game Fallout 4 has a sequence where the player must find an escaped Institute scientist to help enter the Institute, but this involves hiking through the Glowing Sea, an area filled with deadly toxic radiation storms and mutated life forms 19:51.

In Fallout 4, the player can venture into highly irradiated areas without proper protection and still survive, which is unlike Fallout 1 where radiation can silently kill the player if they are unprepared 20:53.

Factions and Characters Super Mutants in Fallout 4 are portrayed as big, dumb, and screamy NPCs, unlike in other Fallout games where they have a rich history and interesting characters, such as Marcus, a former soldier of the Master's Army 22:18.

The game's factions, such as the Raiders, Super Mutants, and Triggermen, lack conversation, motivation, and backstory, making them one-dimensional enemies to kill, unlike in Fallout New Vegas where factions have their own stories and motivations 24:26.

The Gunners faction in Fallout 4 seems like a unique and interesting faction at first, but they are automatically hostile to the player and lack any meaningful interaction or storyline 26:57.

The Minutemen have no real in-universe reason to resemble historical Minutemen and lack goals, motivations, or ideology beyond protecting people 29:20

The Institute is a ruthless and evil organization that abducts people, replacing them with identical synths, and is the main villain of the game, with the player eventually infiltrating their base using a makeshift teleporter 31:46

The Institute's director, Shaun, has a questionable standard for determining whether his parent loves him, involving completing various challenging tasks in the Commonwealth 37:12.

The story of Fallout 4 has plot holes, such as Shaun's ability to control technology but not intervening to help the player, and the lack of explanation for Kellogg's age 37:56.

The Institute's portrayal in the game is criticized for being unrealistic, with its members lacking personal lives, free time, or leisure activities, making them seem like robots 41:27.

World-Building and Environment

The world of Fallout 4 is compared to those of previous Fallout games, with the latter feeling more real and alive, while Bethesda's Fallout worlds feel dead and empty 45:21.

Diamond City appears to be poorly sustained, with only two tiny crop fields and no apparent use of available space for farming or other purposes, and its inhabitants live in rickety shacks despite having the resources to build better housing 46:25.

The city's use of stadium lights for illumination is impractical and wasteful, especially considering the scarcity of power in the post-apocalyptic world, and other locations like the SUS Iron Works seem to have an abundance of power without explanation 47:08.

The game's world-building is lacking, with many locations feeling dead, empty, and static, and characters like the inhabitants of the Drumland Diner living in squalid conditions without basic necessities like beds or toilets 49:26.

Ghouls in Fallout 4 don't need food or water to survive, contradicting the main quest of Fallout 1, where the water chip is crucial for the vault's survival 55:36

Gameplay Mechanics and Choices

The game puts the player in a position of power, making them the general of the Minutemen and director of the Institute, but this has no significant effect on the world or plot 57:16

The game's approach to artificial intelligence and androids, such as Codsworth, is inconsistent and raises questions about their sentience and treatment by factions like the Brotherhood of Steel and the Railroad 01:00:14

Game Reviews and Community Reception

Games journalists cannot provide meaningful reviews due to the need to constantly produce content, and their reviews are surface-level, lacking investment in the game's IP, history, and themes 01:05:29.

The review process is influenced by the potential loss of early access to games and ad revenue, leading to overly positive reviews, such as Fallout 4's 9.5 out of 10 score from IGN 01:06:02.

In contrast to Fallout 4, games like New Vegas have a dedicated fan base, with a cult following and real-life meetups, showcasing a genuine artistic product with a lasting impact 01:06:38.

Not once, since Fallout 4's release, in god only knows how many hundreds of hours of play time, have I gotten the perfectly preserved pie..

UNTIL TODAY.

I jumped up in such excitement that I smashed my knee into my desk and now walk like a feral, but god damnit who cares about pain when you have THE PIE.

Even being unexpectedly awoken so much earlier than the start of her normal shift, Mara Peridot retained her trademark cheer as she made her way to the upper floor of the Vault where everyone was being assembled. Weaving through the assembly of people, she tried to make small talk with one of the computationists who happened to be just ahead of her, but he drearily waved her away while sucking a wakeup paste from a small pouch. Oh well, surely this call by the Overseer was something momentous. She sidled into the large room, the available chairs long since gone, and stood near the wall. She could just see the Overseer just over the heads of some of her taller fellow dwellers. He was a stocky older man, with grey hair and a square face. She had only ever talked with him a few times, normally when he had come into the hydroponics garden to discuss some matter with the more senior biological technicians, but she still fondly remembered when he had stopped on the way out to compliment her agrobacterium-mediated recombination work.

"Ah, you're here, good..." His voice cut short her reminiscing and cut quiet the murmurs that had been in the room. He continued now, with all assembled giving him their full attention.

"Well, only good that you're here. We've got a problem. A big one. The controller chip for our water purification system has given up the ghost. We can't make another one and the process is too complicated for a work-around system. Simply put, we're running out of drinking water. No water, no Vault."

Some gasps and stares that were somehow louder followed his pronouncement. Mara's heart jumped. Surely he was going to explain how this was all going to be fixed in short order. She involuntarily dug her nails against the Vault's wall.

"We are going to do something we've never done before. One of you is going to leave the Vault and find a new water chip. I know, I know. This must come as a shock. We don't know what's out there. But this must be done for the good of the entire Vault."

He motioned to one of the security officers who had been waiting before continuing.

"To make this difficult decision fair, we have decided to leave it up to chance. Everyone who is within the appropriate age range, physical condition, and does not hold a critical position is going to draw straws. There are about two hundred of you, and whoever it is, know I have faith in your abilities. Let's begin."

Everyone was shocked, and the closest dwellers to the security officer seemed to pick their straws from his clutched hands in a daze. Eventually a more formal line begin to form. Vault dwellers were used to forming lines. In front of Mara was Albert Cole and she secretly hoped he would get the short straw. He was well liked in the Vault for his ability to get any two people to come to an agreement. He'd probably do fantastically in the out side, and Mara she'd heard him wishing for a chance to go up there anyways.

"Why straws fix Vault?"

Mara turned to look at the source of the deep, booming voice. It was poor, sweet Max. He was strong, but sometimes got a little turned around. She explained it was a contest and that was enough for Max.

The line got shorter and eventually Albert picked his straw. He whistled as he grabbed it, and with no hesitation examined it.

"Dang!" He exclaimed upon seeing it was full length.

Mara got up to the officer holding the straws and hovered her hand over one, but at the last moment darted away and picked another. Whew it was over. She was done and could could put this morning behind her. Just like Albert, she had a full le-

Oh. No.

No. No. No. No.

It was short. Tiny. No mistaking it. Absolutely not a full length straw.

She couldn't hear anything. Her vision hyperfocused on some random distant point in the room. She barely noticed as Max half caught her falling and guided her into one of the now vacant chairs.

Hey there, c/Fallout! We over on c/FalloutMods have just created our second Monthly Modding Megathread, and I would love if you came over to check us out. Have a great day! :)

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/post/22667719

Hello, c/FalloutMods. March seems to have snuck up on me, and so I present you with our second Monthly Modding Megathread! Feel free to discuss armor mods that you love, or have simply struck your fancy. Below are a few recommendations by myself to start you off.

Fallout 4

One modder who I just cannot escape finding in my mod lists is Niero, and especially their 'CROSS' series of mods. And in my opinion, few come close to their Institute armor designs, such as their CROSS Institute Expeditionary Suit

For those of you with a more 'vanilla' persuasion, we've got you covered with modders such as PrincessAries, who has made a beautiful set of armors by putting together pre-existing meshes. I personally quite like the Minutemen Enforcer Armor which implements some armor from Fallout: London in a vanilla-friendly design.

Fallout: New Vegas

If you're like most New Vegas players, there's just something about the older games that appeals to you, and it seems no one would agree more than TPOl7uHKA, who has made beautiful redesigns of classic armors such as their Classic Brotherhood Combat Armor. If you are modding Fallout: New Vegas, I cannot implore you enough to give these mods a look.

And finally, for a blast from the past, Sweet6Shooter has created a fantastic re-implementation of nivea's wonderful Spice of Life armor collection. Using New Vegas' over decade-long learned lessons and innovations, Spice of Life Overhaul is absolutely worth your eye!

And that's going to be all from me tonight, folks. Please feel free to discuss any mods you want heard, and I'll be seeing you next month. :)

All, last weekend I had the ability (because I'm not going to say pleasure) to go to Faschnaut and I wanted to give a little review and heads up to anyone looking to go ever, please use my experience as a cautionary tale.

Last year my wife and I got the great idea to take our children to Faschnaut, I mean it looked cool and sounded fun, a few weeks before the event we tried to get tickets and found out that they sold out very quickly months prior so this year we were determined to go. I learned that tickets went on sale on new years day, so I set I reminder on my alexa for the exact time so that we could ensure we got tickets to go this year. Sure enough, new years day, the alert goes off and we get tickets for 2 adults and 2 kids for under 100$. Score!

Last weekend we packed up our costumes and headed to middle west virgina to our air bnb (which happened to be 45 mins away from Helvetia.) First let me state that the drive to middle West Virginia is one that is quite harrowing. Not solely because of the mountains and dirt roads that you are often forced to navigate, but nothing prepared me for the level of poverty that is central west Virginia. I'd like to preface this with the fact that I have lived in poor areas in cities all over the United states, in every corner in fact. I have NEVER seen soo much shit and garbage and busted trailers that were inhabited in my entire life. The hoods in Pittsburgh where I'm from atleast have roofs with no massive holes in them, most of the windows are intact and there is running water and sewage, that is not the case where we went. But I don't want to discuss the plight of west Virginia, you are here to read about faschnaut, so I'll get on with it, I just want you to be aware of what you are getting into should you choose to attend.

Saturday it started at 50 degrees in the am and proceeded thru out the day to drop to 30 degrees, we arrived at the festival and it was beginning to snow and was very windy, I was prepared for the cold but it ended up being pretty brutal. We arrived to cars parked all up and down the road and there wasn't really much actual lot parking in the town so we ended up parking on the side of the main road and walking about a half mile. Maybe a little more. When we arrived our initial idea was to go to the restaurant in town but there were 100 people in line waiting, the alternatives were a hotdogs truck (which was so overwhelmed, they stopped taking orders for an hour when we arrived) so we went to a building that sold filipino food. I was pumped, after the military I moved to Seattle and met a veteran who taught me to cook filipino chicken adobo which till this day is my favorite dish of any of the many countries cuisines I know how to cook. I hadn't had adobo made by real Filipinos in over 15 years. What I received was a disservice to Filipinos all over the world. I, a white person, make adobo aeons better than the 3-5 filipino women who cooked this abomination. It tasted like chicken boiled in soy sauce. Massive disappointment ensued.

Next, we left the eating area and ventured out to find our wrist bands. We walked thru town and saw some pretty cool costumes, we were dressed up and got some requests for pics, took some pics, and found our wrist bands. We did notice that a large majority of the people there didn't have wrist bands and didn't realize that you don't need one unless you are going to the star band hall and drinking. Since I had my kids with me, and we had to return home that night thru an hour of the most treacherous backwoods, hills have eyes, you got a purty mouth, mountains I have ever been in, I wasted 100$.

We walked into all the buildings and when I say lackluster, I mean this event is lack-fucking-luster. There were 2 vendors outside, 2 or 3 buildings with used and new clothing that were little more than old dirty shacks with old junk strewn throughout, it may have been antique but it wasnt cleaned or displayed in any presentable manner, it just looked junky, 1 larger area with homemade crafts that you would see anywhere else, a general store that sold natty light for x bucks a pop, or oreos for 8 dollars. My stomach was upset by that point from the filipino food so I got pepto and we ventured back out into the cold. We finished up the entire town in about 2 hours, there was nothing more to see and it was a quarter till 4. The burning of old man winter didn't occur until 645 and since there was no real shelter or even outdoor heaters, we left, cold, a bit disappointed bit mostly confused on what the fuck we stumbled upon.

Here's what I deduced. It's an amazing idea, I love the culture behind it, but the execution is abysmal. No shelter in early March is a stupid idea, none of the buildings are large enough to fit more than 50 people except maybe 2 which were packed due to 500 or 600 tickets being sold. If you aren't beteween 20 and 40 and drinking, there's nothing there for you. This is mainly a drinking event, that's the only way I could see this being somewhat entertaining but with barely any hotelling around for MILES, I fail to see how this isn't just a dui fest. Things that would have made this event 1000x better. A Pavillion, tents with stand up heaters, hell, fucking burn barrels randomly placed. Entertainment for kids, more food vendor options. Or just go there on acid without kids, get hammered and pray you make it home or to your hotel without driving off a cliff, getting electrocuted by the 2x power lines that were down in the mountains we had to drive around, the 3x fallen trees nearly covering the entire road or going down the wrong road and getting killed by what most certainly are meth shacks that litter the landscape like sand on a beach. Long story short, fuck faschnaut, fuck the mountains and fuck central WVA. 2/10 will never go back to WVA again.
