The one that disappointed me the most was kliksphilip. I would've been able to move past the Hogwarts Legacy shit for simply being an ignorant normie, but what he said about Brianna Ghey was truly unforgivable.

[-] SailorFuzz@lemmy.world 4 points 1 hour ago

NEVER look up what any of those Minecraft youtubers are up to today.

[-] TotallynotJessica 2 points 36 minutes ago

They either turn out to be really wholesome people, or absolute pieces of shit with little in between.

I actually just had this happen today but it kinda went the other way. I just realized that the Curry Barker behind the new horror film Obsession was the same guy behind one of my favorite YouTube channels, so I actually got a good reminder instead of a bad one.

[-] TotallynotJessica 3 points 1 hour ago

It always seems to be the comedians who make the best horror

[-] SmokedBillionaire@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

So true, the more it happens the more I have been thinking the approaches used writing the absurd and the horrific must have a ton of overlap.

[-] TotallynotJessica 2 points 37 minutes ago

I also think it's the sort of person both fields attract. Comics are often cynical and edgy while still having a lot of empathy for people, which is a really helpful perspective for writing great horror.

I swear tg if Moist Critikal ever does something cancel-worthy, I'm leaving the internet for good.

What has he been up to lately? I dropped off after the weed game series ended

The STEAM, arts & crafts bit of YouTube has kinda remained the same in most cases or even gotten better. Think of any creator that would go to Open Sauce and they're likely still as good as you remember.

[-] proudblond@lemmy.world 8 points 2 hours ago

I watch a lot of arts and crafts YouTubers and my kids love anyone doing wacky engineering projects. I’ve been disappointed by Mark Rober’s trajectory though. He was always a bit of a bro, but it’s ramped up big time and he seems to be more focused on flair and less on the engineering.

[-] SmackemWittadic@lemmy.world 6 points 2 hours ago

That's true, Mark Rober is kinda the "Mr. Beast" of the wacky engineering community

[-] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 9 points 3 hours ago

Ben Krasnow of AppliedScience is still going strong and has yet to be revealed as an asshole - same for the WellTheresYourProblem crew, Jenny Nicholson, Hbomberguy, OutOfDarts... Im sure theres more, but there's a few if folks are looking for recs!

[-] cheat700000007@lemmy.world 4 points 3 hours ago

Is this a reference to YouTube trends or Google ai search

[-] Jomega@lemmy.world 6 points 2 hours ago

Neither. It's a reference to a creator I used to watch in high school having some truly wild takes now.

Fucker has been acting like a paid shill for Israel for 3 years now.

I mean, I've never seen a single person wearing Teddy Fresh in the US. Are all their "orders" being made from Israel?

[-] Jomega@lemmy.world 13 points 4 hours ago

I hope it wasn't a huge amount of money riding on that bet. I don't know who that is.

[-] HazardousBanjo@lemmy.world 6 points 3 hours ago

Out of curiosity, who is it actually?

[-] Jomega@lemmy.world 11 points 3 hours ago

It was Moviebob. After leaving the Escapist he's become... let's use the word "unpleasant".

[-] Chronographs@lemmy.zip 12 points 4 hours ago

H3h3, but it’s probably for the best

[-] cloudskater@piefed.blahaj.zone 8 points 3 hours ago

I know of his more recent fuckery, but wasn't he always a bit of a problem child of YouTube? Maybe I'm misremembering.

[-] TotallynotJessica 4 points 1 hour ago

He got a lot of good will for being on the right side of a fair use lawsuit back in the day, and gained more credibility after distancing himself from his edgy past. He was in enough with the left to start a podcast with leftist Twitch streamer Hasan Piker. Unfortunately for him, the podcast only radicalized a lot of his community, so when he got into a fight with Hasan over Israel and associating with tankies, most of the viewers took Hasan's side. He spiralled from there into the litigious monster he is today.

[-] MacaqueAndCheese@lemmy.ca 29 points 5 hours ago

If you start a YouTube channel where you find decent sized rocks outside you can sand them down into a smooth dick shape and sell them to hippies as all natural hand crafted dildos for like 1450 bucks a piece.

My longest subscribed channel, Nerd3, has somehow remained almost the exact same channel for over a decade. I don’t know how he does it.

[-] SiegeRhino@lemmy.world 15 points 3 hours ago

Because he leaned heavily into Patreon to fund his channel, and now makes content that he wants instead of content to feed the algorithm. Been following him for over a decade and was more than happy to throw him a dollar

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 6 points 3 hours ago

Same for his friend Ashens. Which reminds me, their Xmas Advent calendar collabs are my favorite part of the holidays now.

[-] Truscape 32 points 5 hours ago

Probably the same way SteveMRE1983 does - finding a niche and having no need to "spice it up for modern audiences".

Game Sack!

That shit has been solid for over a decade

Haven't watched him in years and I immediately heard 'hello Internet' in my head reading that

[-] ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.world 8 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Mandy and Sseth are basically the same (the former more than the latter, Sseth is markedly more stable now) and have also stayed relevant for a decade or so in the adult gaming "subculture". And thank God for that. Charlie (penguinz) fell off like half a decade (EDIT: actually, over a decade ago, I'm just in my 30s so time is starting to mesh) ago at least, but he seems to be a nice and overall normal dude so I wish him the best even if I no longer find him entertaining. 🙏

[-] bizarroland@lemmy.world 7 points 2 hours ago

My problem with Penguin0 is that he's an outrage junkie.

Anytime there's even a morsel of drama, he's got a video out for it within 30 minutes.

And there is a possibility that one of his videos ended up getting the pedophile lead singer of the lost prophets killed in prison, or at least contributed to the awareness of the situation for the prisoner that killed him.

And he seems rather chuffed at that.

I cannot remember a single video he made that has actually been good and worth watching that wasn't him clowning on somebody for being a piece of shit.

[-] TotallynotJessica 3 points 1 hour ago

I'm just surprised he hasn't gone full chud, which is kinda impressive given his niche. He must be good at not getting radicalized by some single issue crusade like so many similar influencers.

[-] ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Ah shit, I didn't know about any of it, I haven't even been subscribed ever since he started posting videos showing his face. Slightly disappointing, NGL. Believe it or not, he used to host a silly, short-form, gaming commentary channel, kinda like Dunkey (another one I used to watch almost religiously but he's now a husband and a father so he gets a pass, lol) but slightly less autistic. I still remember the Happy Wheels, Mr. President and Safety Driving series... and a quick YT check showed me those videos are at least 11 years old. 🥲

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
