This generation is the first time that a console that is half a decade old has continued to rise in price instead of falling.

They want us to pay an assload up front and also pay more for games and to play online compared to PC? This will probably be my last console.

Paying to play online is what got me off the consoles.

100$ per year x 10 years = a pretty decent pc. (At least until recently).

The PS4 is the last console I'll ever own.

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 15 points 2 weeks ago

PCs are even more expensive, but the gaming value over time is huge, especially if you factor in 🏴‍☠️.

[-] YellowParenti@lemmy.wtf 20 points 2 weeks ago

I bought a replacement video card on 2019. It was replacing my 10 year old card. When I built my new PC, it was replacing a pc I begrudgingly installed win7 on. I have emulators from up to PS2. Pc gaming has crazy ROI.

[-] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

Seriously is. You can have whole console collections of Roms and they only take up a speck of your external hard drive. Glorious.

[-] ripcord@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Depends on what PC you get.

Well, when you add the cost of the console to the cost of the online subscription... Not sure the pc is all that much more expensive.

Also, just with Steam sales, the amount of money you save is pretty impressive.

Lastly, when that pc dies, my next pc will still be able to play all the games from the previous pc. Not quite the case with consoles.

All around, pc is a clear winner.

Did I mention I installed Bazzite? It rocks. Microslop gets to eat a bag of dicks and to me, that's worth all the money in the world.

That was the Switch for me. Went PS3 -> Wii U -> Switch then when Nintendo started charging I stopped playing.

[-] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 weeks ago

With ram & gpu prices skyrocketing, todays gaming PCs will have a long life IMO.

Also iirc they're adding age verification for a bunch of online features, like chat. But not for the online store, because of course not :P

Please buy our 6 year old console for an increased price that we kind of forgot to make games for.

[-] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 4 points 2 weeks ago

And where there is little benefit between generations for gamers. No wow for graphics or gameplay. Just more expensive and slightly improved. It’s similar to phones. In an effort to have mass appeal, they try to appeal to all levels of hardware, so can’t fully take advantage of the new. In the past, it just wouldn’t launch on older hardware. However, even the big studios were more like indies back then.

[-] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 111 points 2 weeks ago

Not surprised, cost of living is way up and it’s been on the market for half a decade now

[-] rockSlayer 29 points 2 weeks ago

I know it's true, but it just doesn't feel right. I even worked with PS5s for 4 years and it still doesn't seem right

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 2 weeks ago

besides the HCOL, producing slop games as an AAA isnt exactly attracting old or new customers.

For AI that no one asked for and at best seems to be used to make comical videos of unphysical unrealistic situations that never happened.

[-] mereo@piefed.ca 57 points 2 weeks ago

Lol... It was foolish of Sony to retire from the PC market... Exclusives will not entice people to buy a PS5 in this economy.

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 28 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, it seems like the exact wrong time to do that. Hope it bites them in the ass.

[-] mereo@piefed.ca 9 points 2 weeks ago

I'm sure they will go back on their decision.

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 weeks ago

Only if gamers force them to by not buying their PS5 games. Inshallah!

[-] magiccupcake@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

I bought a ps5, and like what exclusives?

Since 2020 I bought like 6 games? (At least ones that aren't remasters)

Horizon forbidden West, god of war Ragnarok, ghost of yotei, GT7, Spider-Man2, and returnal.

Of these only 2 are still exclusives.

Not great value for a ps5, I thought I'd be buying more single player exclusives but there just aren't that many.

Even if Sony locks down future titles to being exclusive, they are not making enough to justify a console over a pc.

[-] sbbq@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 weeks ago

You missed out on Astrobot. Ratchet and Clank was a pretty good tech demo, also.

[-] winkerjadams@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 weeks ago

Ratchet and clank is on pc too

Companies would be foolish to release new consoles any time in the next 3 to 5 years. None of this is going away anytime soon.

[-] UnspecificGravity@piefed.social 7 points 2 weeks ago

Right, but the fact that this is obvious means that anyone who DOES release a console in this time period is going to be able to capture a lot of market share since they have little to no competition.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 2 weeks ago

only if its affordable though.

It’s not going to go away….ever. They’ve decided to control every thing and never let go this time.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 2 weeks ago

they are hoping enough people buy into thier SLOP machines, so it woudnt matter.

[-] daggermoon@piefed.world 26 points 2 weeks ago

Don't most people who want one already have one?

I recently looked into buying one, and the cost is just so prohibitive, especially when you take into account that you have to buy another controller and a stand because the stand isn't even included. And I would also want one of those chargers. And that doesn't even include the games that are expensive too.

I also noticed that whenever I look at games for the PS4, it says in a disclaimer that the game might not work right on the PS5. I don't know what's going on with that, but it doesn't inspire confidence.

[-] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 23 points 2 weeks ago

It's just a cover-their-ass disclaimer. PS4 compatibility is pretty good in general, I think only like two games don't work.

Don't forget that you also have to pay them $10 a month of you want the luxury of playing those expensive games online

[-] jtrek@startrek.website 20 points 2 weeks ago

I'm happy with my linux machine. Consoles would have to be a lot cheaper to be tempting. Or I'd have to make a lot more money.

[-] HexagonSun@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Yep.

I can’t imagine ever buying another console again.

Have a steam deck and set up my budget Linux machine yesterday.

Got so many PS2 and PS3 games I can’t play anymore on a single device. Never going to have that problem again.

[-] ThomasWilliams@lemmy.world 18 points 2 weeks ago

This is actually worse than the headline because the sales collapsed over Christmas.

[-] newthrowaway20@lemmy.world 17 points 2 weeks ago

Well it has what, 6 exclusive games?

[-] ltxrtquq@lemmy.ml 11 points 2 weeks ago

I wanted to make a joke about foamstars, but it's also available for the ps4.

Instead, here's the wikipedia article with all 23 present and future ps5 exclusive games.

[-] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 weeks ago

23 fucking games. I'm pretty sure the PS1, 2, 3, AND 4 had that many within a year of their releases. The fuck are you doing sony?

[-] ripcord@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago

Wait when did people start demanding exclusives instead of complaining about them

[-] ltxrtquq@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 weeks ago

If you're trying to sell a game console, what can that console offer except exclusives? It's more a comment at how bad at business these giant cororations are than a complaint.

Yeah they are so weird about supporting their stuff. Speaking as a former PS VR owner…

And don’t get me started about the very few games that really take advantage of the PS5 hardware.

Screw consoles and high end computer gaming. Games started looking very good since the PS2 gen. They were just low res. Low end PC gaming is where it's at. Recently I went back to replay emulated Viewtiful Joe, the old KOTOR games PC version, emulated god of war - they look great. On Steam bought the first Rage and it runs on a basic cheap computer now and I think it looks great. Steam Deck is PS4 level. Don't need a PS5 and definitely won't need a PS6. The future is gameplay not graphics

[-] als 8 points 2 weeks ago

I'm sure that there's some rule of economics that says once most consumers who would buy something have bought it, sales will drop.

[-] Thteven@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

They must have seen that study that says Xbox users are better at sex.

Lol at the downvotes. It was a joke guys, but here's a link hahaha

Doesn't matter. People will buy the PS5 in masses when GTA6 releases, no matter the price.

[-] jtrek@startrek.website 5 points 2 weeks ago

I'm reminded of that post that showed all the people in the "boycott cod" group playing call of duty.

The bulk of video game players seem to be feckless marshmallow eaters.
