I wonder how many linguistics are in the manosphere for purely academic reasons. It must be amazing seeing a language evolve at basically hyperspeed

[-] GalacticSushi 32 points 5 days ago

I've seen a few articles written about it. One was basically explaining that in anonymous spaces like 4chan, being fluent in the "language" is a way to signal that you belong since you have no identity tied to your social status. As that language seeps into the mainstream, it becomes less valuable as a signal to the in group and therefore new words and phrases need to be created to keep the language as esoteric as possible. There was a lot of musing on whether these phrases getting picked up in more mainstream uses normalizes these groups, or whether it's more a form of mockery that takes away legitimacy.

[-] Samskara@sh.itjust.works 11 points 4 days ago

That’s true for every group of people, especially young people.

Every family has their own words or phrases only they use.

[-] TerHu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 20 points 5 days ago

it is very interesting indeed, but then again most people i’ve seen studying linguistics are some mix of the following: female, queer, alternative, left, feminist. which means that for most the manosphere and its hostile language is pure horror.

i absolutely despise the fact that pretty normal people have started the hatred nazi misogyny speak and talk about …maxxing and being …pilled.

[-] Damage@feddit.it 21 points 4 days ago

-pilled comes from red-pilled which is a reference to The Matrix, created by the Wachowski sisters, who latter declared it to be heavily influenced by their experiences as transitionin women, so the public using it is just taking it back from the losers.

[-] TerHu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 4 days ago

that’s a very interesting point of view i didn’t consider yet. thanks!

[-] stormdelay@sh.itjust.works 16 points 5 days ago

Nothing wrong with twinkmaxxing if you're queerpilled

[-] Daemnyz@lemmy.ml 9 points 4 days ago

As a cis-male linguistics student I can confidently say that this is not the case. An ostensibly female, blue-haired, feminist friend wrote her bachelor thesis about classifying reddit users in r/asmongold by language and the correlating amount of engagement in discourse in said community to see if she can form groups by classifying them by language and find out if she can form a relation between those groups and the topics (gaming, "politics", misogyny, racism, etc.) they talk about.

[-] TerHu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 4 days ago

first of all, i’m sorry if i created the impression that all linguists were female (and the other attributes i mentioned). rather i was trying to say that an overwhelming majority of the people starting linguistics at my uni carried at least some of the attributes i mentioned. (a very unscientific observation over the last five years)

please elaborate on what is not the case.

you mention a bachelor thesis, but not the result. can you give a quick summary of what she found?

[-] Daemnyz@lemmy.ml 6 points 4 days ago

All good, I think I phrased my comment in a confusing way :) It is true that the humanities have a higher percentage than other fields. I just wanted to add that many female linguists that I know are also dialed into the manosphere/incel/4chan speak even though they are the target of this dehumanising language, kind of in a morbidly curious way lol. Many of my acquaintances are also organising politically, which probably adds to this. As for the results, I sadly haven't met her in a while, I'm sorry. Ohh and I added the cis-male part to clarify that the information is just second hand.

[-] TerHu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 4 days ago

ah, i see, thanks!

i understood everything. (30, no social media apart from lemmy)

please euthanise me

[-] curbstickle@anarchist.nexus 78 points 5 days ago

I more or less understood, but tbh the explanation was incredibly helpful.

[-] Almacca@aussie.zone 52 points 5 days ago

It helped me with understanding, but not with caring.

[-] VieuxQueb@lemmy.ca 5 points 4 days ago

The one thing I did not understand was ASU. And now I understand why, it's the acronym of a school name in the States.

[-] crunchy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 55 points 5 days ago

Somehow it makes even less sense with the explanation.

[-] SaltSong@startrek.website 54 points 5 days ago

At least I understand the words in the explanation.

But who the duck dislike being called a good boy?

[-] curbstickle@anarchist.nexus 38 points 5 days ago

I believe its called "fragile masculinity".

[-] toynbee@piefed.social 13 points 5 days ago

I don't feel strongly positively or negatively about it, but if it's spoken with clear intent to diminish me, I like that person and their application of the phrase less.

Words are just words. It's how and why they're used that matters.

[-] Kellenved@sh.itjust.works 26 points 5 days ago

If someone tries to belittle you by calling you ‘good boy’ you look them square in the eyes and tell them “pardon me but I’m the best boy actually”

[-] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 5 days ago

original post this is attempting to jack the style of:

“Clavicular was mid jestergooning when a group of Foids came and spiked his Cortisol levels 😭

Is Ignoring the Foids while munting and mogging Moids more useful then SMV chadfishing in the club?”

[-] Trainguyrom@reddthat.com 11 points 4 days ago

I feel like I need a shower followed by a nice loooong bike ride after reading that...

[-] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I’m not sure if I should feel ashamed for understanding this without the translation.

Also, for anyone wanting an indirect education on this language, go listen to the Behind the Bastards podcast on Clavicular, it does a great job explaining the infiltration of incel language (which is mostly what the meme is) into the lexicon and talking about Clavicular.

Worth a listen, not because we need to understand the words, but because we get to understand where they came from and the toxicity of incel groups.

I think I just became a tiny bit stupider.

[-] night_petal@piefed.social 10 points 4 days ago

OK. This new "incomprehensible" slang is actually very readable to me. There are Gen X slang/slur combos that make much less sense.

[-] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 13 points 4 days ago

It's just an explanation of incel terminology.

Totally tubular brah

[-] Echolynx@lemmy.zip 8 points 4 days ago

It has the feeling of reading the Folger annotated Shakespeare editions.

[-] tgirlschierke 4 points 4 days ago

folger annotated? does macbeth get with his sister or something?

[-] Echolynx@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago

It's a common edition used in US schools that has the original text on the right page and glosses/context on the left.

A modern day Jabberwocky.

Don't worry if you understand it - the point of Jabberwocky is that we can figure out so much nonsense through context.

[-] JakenVeina@midwest.social 11 points 5 days ago

One possible correction: given that this is a streamer, I'm guessing they're referring to ASU the video game.

[-] HappyFrog 2 points 2 days ago

I think he just like hanging out at ASU. He met with ASU's frat leader some time I think.

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
