Frogs are endangered species in Denmark, so we never did that.

A medical student i lived with said she had human disecction within the first month of her undergraduate degree. Like the first two weeks. I guess it helps weed people out / lure them in.

Yeah, we dissected frogs, worms, and fish in eighth grade. In high school, if you took anatomy and physiology, I know they also dissected fetal pigs.

That was for the advanced classes, if you were the kids being passed so you wern't "Left Behind" (like myself), you got nothing. Cool science classes cost money and they just want you to pass the tests so they didn't lose their funding.

In Morocco when they sacrifice a sheep for Aid (Eid) all the men in the families just take the sheep to the roof of the apartment block and hack at the sheep with a blunt knife until it dies. None of these guys know what they’re doing and the other sheep watch their friends getting hacked up while they wait their turn. I’ve never seen it myself but I’ve got a friend who’s been a couple of times and she says it’s brutal.
If Wikipedia is to be believed these people aren't following Islamic rules. I'd wager that this is once again an issue that stems from traditions made for people of a different time. I assume slaughtering animals used to be a common skill but today expecting the average untrained city dwelling man to correctly slaughter a goat once a year inevitably leads to a lot of needlessly suffering animals.
Wikipedia is correct. The Qurbani I've been to usually have a butcher or an experienced member to guide making the right single cut so that the animal does not suffer.
Just for my own sake, if I got told I’m slaughtering a sheep I would sharpen my knife and research how to get it over with as quick as possible. Maybe order some tarps or a kiddie pool for the blood.

are you and I reading the same comment? It is a relevant anecdote to the topic at hand -- the comic, depicting that different cultures have different customs, in this case of acceptable practices for butchering animals -- which is not at all a "justification for religious hate".
Personally, being aware of some of the other more brutal customs human civilization has come up with over the centuries (the Aztecs come to mind but I can name more if you wish), what Moroccans do with their sheep seems pretty tame to me.

But why bring up that one in particular with a sweeping overgeneralization? It has got that smell. Using sweeping generalizations against people of "lesser" faiths, ethnicities, genders, or other affiliations which are protected always has that kind of smell.

My science teacher wanted to get us euthanized cats from the shelter to dissect. But the school said no, he was disappointed and shared that with us.

I don't really know, but they all came sealed in airtight bags that we had to cut open. They had some preservation chemical sealed inside as well, not formaldehyde at the time because it was known to cause cancer. But the smell was something I'll never forget.
There was enough for all of us to pair up and share one, so it was a lot of pig fetuses. They looked like they were very late in the gestational phase about to be born, because they had all their bits, hooves, eyes... basically fully formed newborns right before birth.
I can only imagine someone had a connection with a slaughter house because of the sheep's heads as well. Probably things the farm would toss out but made a buck off of selling for dissection to local labs.

Yes, the meat you eat is not magically appearing in the store. Yes, regular school anatomy books are presenting an idealized version of animal and human anatomy, and having a more correct understanding is handy. Luckily, our organs are similar to those of many animals, so you don't have to bring kids to the morgue.
Having in-depth understanding of who animals and humans really are informs better decisions about many things, including vegetarianism (and also medicine and veterinary, too)

Only thing I ever had to gut in school was fish, only once. And I was about 15 I think. Not too traumatizing.
I remember a biology classroom had a shelf with many skulls and skeletons of rabbits and other small animals though.
