Same thing with pots in the dishwasher. They either survive or I don't want them.

[-] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

I allow one thing to not go in there, that's the cast iron.

I also try to not use the cast iron that much.

You just let it heat up long enough to burn off the last meal then wipe it off before cooking.

[-] cRazi_man@europe.pub 38 points 3 weeks ago

If it dies, it dies; but no way I'm going through the hassle of hand washing.

[-] Meron35@lemmy.world 19 points 3 weeks ago

No need to actually hand wash. Most machines have a wools or gentle setting explicitly designed for hand wash only garments.

Survival of the fittest.

Same with plants. If they don’t like being watered very irregularly, they won’t survive very long 🙂

[-] prex@aussie.zone 13 points 3 weeks ago

My tired brain thought that plants were a type of pants.
Plain pants? Pleated pants? Pleather pants? Oh - plants.

[-] BennyInc@feddit.org 10 points 3 weeks ago

If you water your pants too often, go and see a doctor.

Exacta. I stopped bothering with ironing or separating whites from colors a decade ago. It doesn't get bought if it picks up stains from other clothes, bleeds color to other clothes, or gets wrinkled even if I hang dry or hang it up hot from the dryer.

Only exception is merino wool sweaters (lay flat to dry) and a few dress clothes (dry clean only).

"This shirt is dry clean only, which means it's dirty"

[-] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 4 points 3 weeks ago

I'm guessing you do first few washes of new clothes separate from others because almost always they give out some colour at first

[-] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 3 points 3 weeks ago

Nope, I just don't care about it.

[-] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 2 points 3 weeks ago

It can just make it so that all colours and especially white clothes get "muddled" and look more worn faster. But if it doesn't bother you then I wouldn't separate them either, extra effort for no benefit

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 weeks ago

I think the thing is that most modern detergents work fine at like 30°C, so if you just wash at low temperature it'll clean the clothes without leeching any colour.

[-] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 19 points 3 weeks ago

If anything says "hand wash", it's staying in the store.

[-] B1naryB0t@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 3 weeks ago

Sounds like it doresn't have what it takes to thrive in this fast paced environment.

[-] Gormadt 14 points 3 weeks ago

And before anyone asks: Yes I have gotten quite good at fixing seams and reattaching buttons.

[-] Flamekebab@piefed.social 11 points 3 weeks ago

I have a South Park mug that says "not safe for dishwasher or microwave" on its base. I've had it since the late '90s and have never honoured those instructions.

Whenever I see that on a piece of crockery my response is the same - "May the odds ever be in your favour!"

[-] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 weeks ago

Cold water, every time. I do my whites separately, because I have enough for a full load. When I had teenagers I did a load of blacks. (That's also a good place for the occasional red item so it won't ruin everything else.) But I ain't smushing anything around in no sink!

[-] relativestranger@feddit.nl 7 points 3 weeks ago

when the laundry wants $4.50 for a washer and $2.00 (x2) for a dryer everything is washed together and dried together.

[-] kersploosh@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 weeks ago

This shirt is dry-clean only. That means... it's dirty.

Everything gets washed on permanent press as well. Nearly everything you buy is synthetic fibers or polyester blends now anyway.

[-] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 4 points 3 weeks ago

What is permanent press? Most of my stuff is cotton as I avoid plastic clothes and I just go with what ever sounds like the most generic wash setting and then stick it out on the line.

[-] falseWhite@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

Do people sort their washing? I don't think I'll ever be this mature.

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 weeks ago

it's easy enough to just leave the white/pale clothes in the hamper until you have enough of them for a dedicated load to themselves.

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 2 weeks ago

Also: fuck ironing. My clothes go from the washing machine directly into the drier and then get sloppily rolled up and stuffed into the drawers. If that makes it look wrinkly then the clothes are too fancy.

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
