There was a visual novel game, probably over a decade ago... About a boy who went to "tank school" but ended up in a school of girls who were actually ww2 tanks. The funniest part is it was historically accurate to my knowledge. Like the American tank and German tank hated each other and the French tank kept crashing into things and had problems stopping.

I think theres one episode that is entirely just them debating free will and agency in what we would now basically call a VR chat lobby, and the whole gang of human characters thinks they are all broken in some way, while in reality they are literally just inert in the real world whilst fully engaged in this virtual discussion... and they conclude this discussion and all go back to normal, and the human cast is ... basically dumbfounded, worried that Section 9 was under some kind of cyberattack.
But generally, yeah they're... kinda derpy and goofy and you get a fair number of scenes where their massive physical size and non human anatomical configuration basically leads to physicsl comedy when they try to replicate more humanlike behaviors or mannerisms.

I think they are cool and engineering behind them is fascinating but I don't know anything/very little about tanks.

You can fuse/weld/sabotage a tank barrel into inoperability, you can unmount coaxial, cupola mounted mgs, even remove the smoke launchers and other counter measures, you can remove all the ammo and munitions.
IRL, this does happen, private tank ownership is pretty fucking rare, but it does exist, and they are basically civillianized in the above described ways.
They are also not road legal, for... hopefully very obvious reasons.
