So Americans, you ready to put a stop to this yet?

General strike now. Shut it down. Organize, disrupt, disobey.

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 71 points 1 week ago

Don't worry, there will surely be people left to speak up for us when they come for us.

[-] oddlyqueer@lemmy.ml 37 points 1 week ago

Speaking of, I am a little familiar with this group https://generalstrikeus.com/

I don't see it discussed much in fediverse channels, and I don't really know why. Curious to hear what people think of them. But they're the only group pushing for a general strike that I can think of off the top of my head.

[-] curbstickle@anarchist.nexus 24 points 1 week ago

I don't like having to share my phone number, which is why I haven't signed up. Or that every social is the typical - discord, bluesky, youtube, instagram.

I'm all for the idea, but they give me big privacy worries.

Sure, I'll just go ahead and lose my job now and deprive my family of food and shelter before the Nazis get a chance to do so.

I'm all for calling out Nazi bullshit, but blanket statements like this help absolutely nobody.

Unemployed people be like:

[-] Steve@startrek.website 29 points 1 week ago

I think its called game theory? Or maybe prisoner dilema. We are afraid that enough of the country is in support of the nazi regime that the strikers will lose their jobs

[-] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 27 points 1 week ago

It's what everyone is conditioned to think and believe

In reality, if they fight they might lose their jobs ...

.... if they wait to see what else happens, they'll probably lose their jobs anyway

You're damned if you do and damned if you don't ... if you do nothing, there is more of a chance of losing everything but if you fight back or at least protest peacefully and disrupt and disobey, there is enough of a chance that you and everyone else will have much more to gain.

I think the general strike is the best bet because they’re looking for a reason or excuse to have the military start massacring civilians. I honestly think a widespread peaceful general strike shutting down the economy until the oligarchs cry mercy is our best hope in this situation

We have no way of carrying out a general strike right now. GSUSA is a pretty good group trying to build capacity, and UAW President Shawn Fain is pushing for unions to renegotiate their contracts so that they all end on May 1st 2028, obvs including UAW.

General Strikes are illegal in the USA, a union can't call a legal solidarity strike, thanks to Taft-Hartley. I'm not a legalism guy, I think legalism is an illusion the workers need to overcome. But the fact is, we haven't overcome it. Even a lot of pretty militant leftist groups in the US have a "new constitutional convention" fetish, it's even in the old DSA program.

There is no infrastructure for it. A few dozen Americans on Lemmy not showing up for work isn't gonna do shit. The best chance we got is 2028, which will be badass if Trump is still in office.

There is so much work to do and frankly its frustrating when people are like "just do impossible thing". Stand up and help us we need help so badly. I think a lot of people in USamerica who say this kind of shit have absolutely no fucking clue what they're talking about. No one wants to give up a fraction of their quality of life to have a political discussion about real shit. People just want someone else to come along and save them, and then even if someone does come along, complain if we don't have our butt kissed just the way we like it. The only thing we know how to do is speak to a manager. We are a nation of Karens. We are not ready.

I think the violence will continue (and probably escalate) until the United States of America are split apart. There cannot be one central federal government. Political power must be shifted to the states. Unfortunately, due to historical reasons, not enough people are understanding this yet, because a federal system has worked so well in the past, that it first needs to be proven by Trump that the potential for abuse at the federal level is huge, and only then will the States get their Rights.

This is absolutely insane and highly illegal. The government cannot just kick down a whole apartment building full of doors, enter homes, and arrest people at random without a warrant or exigent circumstances. The law is quite settled on this.

[-] Zedd_Prophecy@lemmy.world 78 points 1 week ago

The "law" is being ignored as it was in pre- Nazi Germany when the brown shirts started arresting and beating and intimidating people. There is no law currently.

[-] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 22 points 1 week ago

The big problem is that there IS law: the kind that favors the government. As of right now, people can't go out and crush some ICE without the courts and police doing something about it.

I hate the fact that the international community is just sitting by because it's an internal affair and only speaking up about trade issues, etc... That's what gave Nazi Germany carte blanche to do it's thing leading up to 39.

Every sane country on earth needs to be embargoing the fuck out of the U.S., not just for their own sake, but for the sake of forcing the American political establishment to deal with their own fascist problem or become a paraiah on the world stage.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 28 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yeah but the problem is he didn't achieve power by some manipulation of the vote at least not primarily he achieved it by getting a bunch of Americans to vote for him. A bunch of stupid ignorant Americans wearing silly hats voted for him.

Shy of any evidence to say otherwise he is the democratically elected leader of the United States. All the countries can't be setting the precedent that if they don't like a particular leader they will assist in their downfall.

Besides if Europe playes it's cards right it's about to become the economic superpower of the world. The current economic superpower appears to be continuously blowing their own feet off and giggling.

I kind of agree. I think we’re at the point if you get kidnapped you’re dead already so prevent your loved ones from getting disappeared if you can.

If you want this to stop, the city/county/state needs to bring felony breaking and entering + kidnapping charges to every individual who approved this and carried it out. And like tomorrow or as soon as humanly possible.

The kinds of people who carry these operations out do not have empathy and will only change their behavior by force. A big list of felony counts and lawyer's fees might make them pause and reconsider.

So where are the bus loads of lawyers? Even with today’s authoritarian reality, that should be an open-shut case. Even if ICE claims they can write their own warrants, there’s no way they’re motivated enough to write one for every unit in a large building. Their laziness trumps their malice

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 33 points 1 week ago

I'm thinking ICE was not given all that funding for nothing. They were probably already over-funded even before this year, and now they have multiples of what they had before.

Ghouls like Stephen Miller want to see that money spent on inflicting pain on others...

They will continue to escalate, also. They need a reason to halt the midterms. If they succeed at raids without opposition they get rid of a lot of people they already don't like, and if we fight back, tRump enacts ~~Marshall~~ Martial Law. We were fucked as soon as SCOUTS said presidents were above the law...

They mounted a tripod gun on the roof of the broadview facility. I challenge anyone to think about "shithole" areas of the world and not envision unmarked paramilitary wearing masks, body armor, and carrying something like an ar15.

A lot of people like to puff out their chest and say that. I still haven't seen something like that happen in the news for all the times ICE has raided people's homes throughout the country. It could be a matter of time but it'll be exceedingly rare.

sounds like the United States

nothing new to report this is just same reposted news

sometimes the labels change but the narrative has always been the same here

[-] oddlyqueer@lemmy.ml 76 points 1 week ago

This is such a bullshit take. "Oh sure, American cops are brutalizing children now but did you know they also brutalized children before? Oh you didn't? Oh, you aren't completely numb to the encroaching totalitarianism of the American empire? You know it's been happening for decades, right? Why bother being upset about it now when you should have been upset about it in the '70s? and by '70s I mean the 1770s lmao"

Seriously STFU with this. We know it's been happening. The problem is that it's still happening, and as long as it is happening it's newsworthy.

[-] BertramDitore@lemmy.zip 39 points 1 week ago

I bet these specific kidnapped children would take issue with your characterization. This is brand new. It just happened. The narrative may be similar to past events, and it’s definitely some believably awful American bullshit, but let’s show some empathy for the specific victims of state violence, while also criticizing the state for committing said violence. Dismissing the news as just more of the same only normalizes this kind of violence, even if that’s not your intention.

[-] TheReturnOfPEB@reddthat.com 24 points 1 week ago

Sure, enough.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tacoma_riot_of_1885

The mob marched Chinese residents to a railroad station and forced them to board a train to Portland.[2] In the following days, the structures that remained in the Chinese community were razed.[3] The event was the result of growing anti-Chinese sentiment and violence throughout the American West.

This organized action became known as the "Tacoma method", and despite national and international outcry, it was used as an example of how to forcibly remove Chinese residents from cities and towns throughout the American West.

[-] Hegar@fedia.io 18 points 1 week ago

Amidst the vast and brutal history of racism and genocide in the US, it's easy to forget that the only people to have been banned from the country by law were the Chinese.

Fuck off. We've been watching this for months. Do something about it already.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 29 points 1 week ago

The thing is people don't like to hear it but history has the answer. The only thing that stopped the Nazis was violence. If Hitler's assassination attempt in the early 1940s had been successful history would never have even recorded his name.

And violence, starts at home. The international community won't help and couldn't help even if they wanted to. That will come in time, but Americans have to take responsibility for starting it.

I keep seeing this. What is there to do?

Commit suicide by ~~cop~~ capital defense force? Because that's basically what "doing something" entails.

Any positions that could "do something" are on the Fascist's side, including the for profit news media. We are just as trapped in this capitalist web of coercion as we were before it went full fascist.

Why do you think filthy socialists and commies like myself were telling anyone who would listen, including getting laughed off of occupy Wall Street by the people we were trying to save, I was there, that the capital markets were our doom and our end? Because they were, and here we are.

I'm just glad their dream of this malice continuing in perpetuity truly is just a malignant dream. Climate change has something for this greedy, sociopathic civilization's ass, and the fact that we're turning our habitat against the species effectively permanently can't be bribed, black bagged, discredited, dissappeared, reframed, or any of the other dirty tricks the capitalist fascists have used to get their way and steamroll the innocent.

[-] humanamerican@lemmy.zip 22 points 1 week ago

Bring the economy to a halt via general strike and street marches that disrupt traffic. Nothing short of that will get anyone's attention.

[-] Allonzee@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

The US, it bears repeating captured by our capital markets, keeps most Americans on a paycheck to paycheck knives edge for that very reason. The ones most inclined to strike are the ones that have the most to lose by striking.

You're asking tens of millions of people to lose the roof over their heads for a very uncertain outcome.

The sad reality is that the capitalist bastards have their bases covered. Not surprising considering their effectively limiltess capital and the generational grudge the wealth class has over the formation of unions here to begin with.
