INFO: image above "slop" text is generated by diffusion model (i found it on duckduckgo, did not generate it myself)

alternative image link on blahaj zone

i looked at dis "stop doin math" funi, n thought "eh - why not" n now i made dis.

generally tried to keep it as close to the original as possibl, while also makin it maria-themed - so here we go. i think it turned out preddi well.

in case dis post blows up n reaches the lemmy world peeps who dun kno me, here a little note to all u who r about to write a comment bout my writin style:

  • i dun hav a stroke, n so do u.

n for anyone curious, here the matrix multiplication thingy i mentioned in smol text. tldr: google put their gemini-2.0 into a loop of tryin stff out, n at som point it came up with the currently fastest matrix multiplication method to date.

EDIT:

for anyone even more curious (only read this if u care bout my stance)yes, dis post is kindsa meant to be sepf-deprecating humor.

u might wondr buut mariaaaaa - why??? whads self-deprecating bout postin out the obvious downsides of current ml systems?

well let me tell u a story ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿฉ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฅง

(which i wrote btw, no language model was used)

once upon a time, there was a maria ๐ŸŒธ in a magical world of gud ๐ŸŸข and evil ๐ŸŸฃ.

maria ๐ŸŒธ hated how the evil magic ๐ŸŸฃ was destroying the environment: evil powerful magic-wielders ๐Ÿ˜ˆ would create huge evil-magic-producers ๐ŸŸช with the hope of replacing the human!

she also hated how suddenly, these dark-magic creatures ๐Ÿ’œ wud write boring useless text and create uncanny scary imagery. typical of the evil-magics ๐Ÿ˜ˆ, she ๐ŸŒธ thought.

the black-magic-advancements ๐ŸŸฃ at the time scared her so much, she believed all of human work could be replaced with this new dark magic ๐ŸŸฃ! she imagined a future where no peep worked, with many takin their lifes becuz they felt it was meaningless without goals to achieve.

despite all dis, maria ๐ŸŒธ imagined they cud be used for gud, so she ๐ŸŒธ lead one of the little creatures ๐Ÿ’œ home. not to profit from, but to see what it ๐Ÿ’œ cud do ~

at home, she ๐ŸŒธ put the dark creature ๐Ÿ’œ into a bunni-cage ๐Ÿ‡, wrote a page of instructions and pushed it thru the cage to the creature ๐Ÿ’œ

it ๐Ÿ’œ licked the page, and started pretending to do the task, by writing down the actions it ๐Ÿ’œ would take... but not actually doing them...

turns out, she ๐ŸŒธ had to let the written text be turned into actual actions using another well-known ancient spell: text-parsing ๐ŸŸข :o

after bits of tinkerin, maria ๐ŸŒธ ... didn hav anythin useful, but she had fun trynna make the lil one ๐Ÿ’œ do increasingly complex tasks. at som point, she felt accelerated by her own doings, n put it ๐Ÿ’œ into a larger, bear-sized cage, n gave it ๐Ÿ’œ much longer, mor complex instructions

she ๐ŸŒธ wud change its ๐Ÿ’œ personality, look at its ๐Ÿ’œ own writing, refine it, revise it, test its ๐Ÿ’œ ideas, see its ๐Ÿ’œ own failure n keep on tryin.

...

unknowingly, she ๐ŸŒธ had becom a black magic wielder ๐ŸŸฃ. she ๐ŸŒธ had becom, whad she ๐ŸŒธ hated so much ๐ŸŸฃ -

though maria ๐ŸŒธ didn giv brith to the monster ๐Ÿ’œ (which wud increase environmental problms), she only fed it ๐Ÿ’œ vrri little magical energy (much less than others wud use to play magic games) - n didn share the creatures ๐Ÿ’œ scribbles with others, cuz she didn wana be like those other peeps ๐ŸŸฃ who pretend the output is worth sharin.

she ๐ŸŒธ imagined her frens frowning upon her, once findin out bout her ๐ŸŒธ "hobby" ๐ŸŸฃ.

...

one question bugged her tho:

aftr all dis time, am i still maria ๐ŸŒธ? or hav i becom... maria ๐Ÿ˜ˆ?

she couldnt answer dis question.

the end

oh yea - u prolli need som context:

i am developin an lm-based helper thingy for godot game engine for about a year by now. dis is why the post is kindsa self-deprecating, its cuz im litrlli buildin a thing which "does tasks". vrri funi.

anway, plz dun call be an ai-sis, i did make dis funi pictur aftr all, so i must be sane, right?

(plz be cool bout dis >o< )

^ ^ ^ dis includes a little story too btw - its got mojis! ^ ^ ^

I don't think "misinformation" has two s in it.

[-] Smorty 31 points 1 week ago

fair- engish is not my first language,.-,. i jus thought like "oh yea - well - its false info, so it.. misses the ... information"... n so i jus put dis >v<

[-] wander1236@sh.itjust.works 18 points 1 week ago

Apparently they're etymologically unrelated. Miss comes from Germanic and mis- is a Latin prefix. English!

[-] Chronographs@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago

Itโ€™s actually just German Latin and Greek in a trench coat

[-] Fuck_u_spez_@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

I just love the fact that you apparently hand wrote this post. I'm fairly certain I did have a stroke while attempting to read the description, though.

pfff - if u like the style, u shud hav a look at som of my othr posts >v<

Well well well, found the AI

The main sort of uses I've found compelling is mapping LLMs of human language onto whale language. It's not a translator, but it might help us get a general idea of how their languages work. The vast majority of machine learning nowadays is wasteful garbage attempting to get rid of labor instead of being the tool that it is.

[-] Smorty 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

huh - dis is a rlli intrstng usecase - evn if i find dis ki dsa hard to imagine (cuz i imaginenits hard to design a "correct training signal" for ur transformer to train against) - but like - if thad worked, dis wud feel truly futuristic- but in the cool and magical way ~ ~

EDIT: if we do get the training signal right tho, it actually shouldn be too much of an environmental burden too - cuz we wud probably not finetune an "LLM" (a large language model) but prolli jus a smol local one (like my fav: qwen3:4b at size under 4GB), so we dun need to train entire model from scratch - - - so yeag, rlli cool idea ~

Dune was ahead of its time

[-] Smorty 2 points 1 week ago

waowaowaowowah wait - is dune not jus bout som sand?

like - i actulli dun kno whad the movie is bout - imma look into it now <3<3<3

The books have crazy good lore and very unique ideas in the terms of society, culture, politics and religion. Even tho they've been written in the 50s or something. Not a light read, but if you wanna ponder some stuff it has stuff to ponder. Also great for reading in bed cause it will put you to sleep ๐Ÿ˜Œ

The movies are also good (and so frigging pretty) but its hard to squeeze all that into couple hours. Enjoy either way <3

[-] criss_cross@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Oddly enough I think the reason LLMs blew up was because you could essentially โ€œgoogleโ€ with them.

Google search has gone to complete shit in the last decade that itโ€™s impossible to find anything on what youโ€™re looking for without parsing a lot of garbage text thatโ€™s meant to add more SEO keywords, but isnโ€™t actually meant to help you understand anything.

Now a tool comes along that can summarize and parse the garbage out.

Give it 10-15 years and LLMs will be shittified as well.

[-] Smorty 1 points 1 week ago

i kindsa agree with u here, evn if i dun use them LMs for search myslelf.

even tho i feel it mostly blew up cuz dis initial "chatgpt moment" was somethin truly fresh n new for so many peeps. It rlli felt magical havin a computr seemingly kno a gud response to every message u throw at it - - - - dis magic moment is what got me excited - n guess what: i still am excite and magicified!

parsing info - is one of those things LMs r reasonably gud at. so evn if future LMs r worse than todays, we cn jus use the "old" models (our current ones) instead. They wont kno future knowledge ofcourse - but theyll be useful for stff we kno right now-

if them companies presented these LM features as options, n not huge ui elements takin up screen space, mayb peeps wud be happier to use it.

if googl stopped showin dis huge "ai summary" panel, but instead a smol "summarize results" button, the ai-haters wud be happy, n googl wud spare som inference costs-

buuuuuuuut nope - them googlz jus wana hav us look at the slop we didn ask for. investors r happi iguess.

Language models were not meant to do tasks?

I have mine tied into my Home Assistant to convert my natural language requests into commands that Home Assistant can understand. It's pretty great at that task.

They are also great at helping people who have a hard time writing in a specific language communicate more clearly in that language.

[-] Ilixtze@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 week ago

Prompt injecting a whole house is a good theme for a horror movie!

[-] Smorty 3 points 1 week ago

ur right, LMs cn translate natural languag queries into som json format to take action.

whad i was referrin to are agents, where u put ur LM inti the driver seat n pet it go do thad task for u (like go shopping, clean the house or write and test som code).

in the "base model stage" of these LMs, we see them only predict online text, not follow instructions - n theres not that much step-by-step data on how to do tasks. So currently, LM labs create synthetic data, to make their models learn common patterns.

so - mor or less by definution - they were nit made to do tasks, we kindsa force em to-

but yesyis, the home assistant case is a reasonable application of LMs <3 (surprised amazons echo doesn use dis yet)

[-] dumbass@aussie.zone 1 points 1 week ago

Did you get AI to write this?

[-] Smorty 4 points 1 week ago

naw, all real life output from me.

i specifucally told myslelf with dis one "yeag nu, dis one is supposed to be a real one" - so i made it myself - evn if it took longer (i had troubke picking arguments i actualli support... becuz som of the popular ones i kindsa disagee with ~ ~)
