"I'll take the case. I love a mystery."
Allowing Tuvix to live murdered Tuvok and Neelix. Which is only a loss of Tuvok, but murdering Tuvok isn't cool.
Counterpoint - Tuvok and Neelix were lost in an industrial accident.
Tragic, but this is Starfleet. Risk, as they say, is their business.
Read that second line like Tuvok was reading it.
Counter-counterpoint - Tuvix was too ugly to be allowed to live, and his name too close to Cervix to not make continued existence anything less than Jr. High level harassment.
What I've never understood is why it had to be one or the other (or why they had an issue with this particular murder); they have, and regularly use, a device that makes copies of people and things, and murders or destroys the original (it's been proven that the murder part is completely unnecessary, so they probably only do it to avoid paperwork and overpopulation).
Why couldn't they just not murder the original Tuvix when they made the copies of Tuvok and Neelix? It makes no sense.
Same with that episode where some guy wants to murder Data to learn how to make androids; why couldn't they just make a copy of the thing and murder that one, and keep their "original" one?
Hell, why learn to make androids at all? Just make more copies of Data without murdering the original! The whole Starfleet could be crewed exclusively with Datas and Tuvixes, if they wanted!
Well with Data it's different, they didn't know how to make a copy of him, only papa did and it took him most of a lifetime.
Transporter shenanigans are, admittedly, just something you gotta hand-wave.
they didn't know how to make a copy of him
Of course they did! They do it constantly, they just murder the original! Just do the same they did with Riker and they're golden!
Look at you, thinking with logic on a show where the science is just a plot device for exploring the human condition via aliens.
An accident is not the same as a murder. Tuvok and Neelix died in an accident. Tuvix was murdered.
Edit: Sorry, didn't realize Lemming 421 has already made this point.
OK, what I'll accept is that once they realized how to undo Tuvix and return him back to Tuvok and Neelix, it was manslaughter.
Tuvix was murdered so tuvok and neelix could live. Wtf kind of name is tuvix anyway, you were asking for it.
In fact, the crew count has increased by one.
Does one unkilling compensate a killing?
In my defense, they didn't read the "Don't Talk To Me Until I've Had My Coffee" on my mug before trying to speak to me.
Amazing choice of frames for both characters.
Janeway is possessed right? Maybe by 7 of 9?
"Today?" works too.
Define "MuRdEr"
The unjustified killing of another sentient being.
(The answer being that they took the last cup of coffee and didn't put on a new pot. It was justified.)
Or in case of Tuvix, they were icky
he put his finger in her coffee. Definitely Icky.
With that definition, Janeway didn't murder Tuvix. She had justification, even if one believes Tuvix still had a right to live. Poor justification is still justification.
So the thing is, that, tuvix’s right to life is currently violating Tuvok’s and Nellix’s right to life.
It’s far more complicated than can be shown on the screen. Personally, I think she got it right. Even if it’s not an easy decision to make.
Yea I actually agree. Even on the surface, one quite literal mistake of a being's existence isn't as much value as two beings' existence. Even if their minds were truly both there in agreement, allowing Tuvix to exist is kinda' like saying, "naaaahhhh, I totally wouldn't undo that car crash that permanently altered our lives if I had the choice."
The other thing is… how do you know tuvix is telling the truth? That they’re okay with it?
It’s an entirely new entity. No telling how the two personalities interact to create it.
Well, they were both very honest people before the merge at least. I cannot imagine they'd come out of it dishonest. ... of course having your life on the line is a hell of a reason to start lying!
Nelix wasn’t that honest, lol.
Tuvok was living undercover lying all the time, and Nelix lied to rescue Kes, for example.
Well OK I guess I more mean honorable sort of behavior. lol Though yea lying to stay alive isn't exactly the worst thing someone could do anyways. Janeway was still right regardless! At least, outside of the risk of it not working and frying all three of 'em. I don't remember how they portrayed the risk.
then no
This had me chuckling uncontrollably for several minutes. This must be one of the funniest star trek memes out there
Janeway is allowed a little bit of murder. As a treat.
There's coffee in that corpse
