"No motive" is gonna get worn out in the coming weeks. The lesbian teen in Illinois; Jonathan Joss; this? All completely random.

[-] zewm@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Hi. Those commas should be periods. I was so confused reading that sentence. 🤓

[-] GeeDubHayduke@lemmy.dbzer0.com 34 points 1 month ago

Semicolons ftw

[-] RegularJoe@lemmy.world 39 points 1 month ago

People who throw acid at other people should have acid thrown on them.

[-] FoxyFerengi@startrek.website 54 points 1 month ago

These kids are really young, I mean where does an eight year old get the idea and motivation to do this? The twelve year old probably egged the others on, but still this is such an intense crime for such young ages

[-] Microw@lemm.ee 51 points 1 month ago

Even a twelve year old would normally not have the means to plan such an attack. Researching how to do it, getting the acid, actually going through with the plan – that sounds suspiciously like someone older planning it and having the children execute the attack because they'll face more lenient penalties from the law IMO.

[-] paraphrand@lemmy.world 18 points 1 month ago

Maybe they asked a large language model.

[-] anothercatgirl 13 points 1 month ago

Nah, children are as good at scheming as adults. Young brains are underdeveloped in different ways than most people think, and the abilities significantly resemble those of an adult in many (but not all) ways at a young age.

When I was 12, I released chlorine gas into my room in the process of trying to make oxidiser for rocket fuel and also did a bunch of other stupid shit that could have maimed or killed me. Don't underestimate kids.

[-] P00ptart@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

It was .5 kg of lithium in a kiddie pool for me.

[-] djsoren19 22 points 1 month ago

The serious answer is they learn it from their parents and society at large.

I'd be willing to bet money that the household they grew up in has Fox News blasting 24/7. They certainly live in a conservative area, so all their friends are probably growing up in similar situations. When you feed children an informational diet of consistent hatred and violence, you can't really be surprised when they act on it.

[-] selkiesidhe@lemm.ee 36 points 1 month ago

Life in prison. I don't care how old they are. Life in prison. This is a hate crime and terrorism plus we don't need to give ideas to the dumb fucks who live in this country...

[-] princessnorah 12 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I'm sorry, but you disgust me.

Edit: Yeah, I checked the article, these are children aged 8-12. I had some awful fluffing opinions at that age too, even if I never would have committed an act like this.

[-] aramova@infosec.pub 18 points 1 month ago

I'm sorry, but you disgust me.

I'll take the down votes for this, the feeling is mutual.

The sociopathic kids who cut up neighborhood pets, inflict life long injuries on other people, burn down homes for fun, rape little girls cause voices said so, can all rot in a hole.

Anyone who cries that 'oh they didn't know better' or 'oh it's how they're raised' or any other excuse can fuck right off.

No place in society, and I'd happily throw all the fuckers who defend them in the same hole.

That kinda sanewashing of bullshit behavior is why we get the fucking shit we do.

Sociopathic cunts need to be held to account by society, and so do the parents, neighbors and friends who empower them.

[-] princessnorah 16 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I'm not excusing their behaviour. I just don't believe in punishment over rehabilitation. These are 8-12yo and I choose to believe that they aren't irredeemable or that they are incapable of learning better. If that makes me naïve then so be it, I'd rather be naïve than carry that sort of hate in my heart as well.

[-] aramova@infosec.pub 6 points 1 month ago

I don't hate them, or you. I'm being pragmatic. Them, and the people who sanewash and excuse their behavior are the enablers of this, and are inherently irredeemable.

[-] princessnorah 9 points 1 month ago

It's kind of hilarious that you're using a term coined from discussions on defunding the police while simultaneously promoting the prison system. I'm not excusing their heinous behaviour, I just also don't believe an eight year old that hasn't come close to developing an adult level of reasoning should be put in prison for life. But whatever, keep making excuses for your disgusting opinions.

[-] head_socj@midwest.social 2 points 1 month ago

Please don't have kids.

[-] CriticalThought@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago

I had some awful fluffing opinions at that age too, even if I never would have committed an act like this.

I don’t think OP wants to put them in jail for their opinions, but because they committed this act…

[-] princessnorah 10 points 1 month ago

Hate crimes are born from opinions. My point was that at that age a lot of people think some awful things. I thought gay people shouldn't be able to adopt, thanks to being raised in a Catholic family. These lot committed a terrible act and that's important to acknowledge as well, but I don't think they should be jailed for life at the age of eight years old for it. I can't believe that's a controversial take?

[-] CriticalThought@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

That may be, but my point was that the call for jail was due to their “opinions” fueling an impactful crime. You said yourself, despite the awful beliefs you held at that age, you’d have never committed such an act. I think that’s an important distinction.

I don't think they should be jailed for life at the age of eight years old for it.

FWIW, I can appreciate the reasons that there is a juvenile court system in the US and agree that life without parole seems excessive based on my limited understanding of the crime and its context.

[-] seejur@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

You are correct. Life in prison for their parents

[-] Hirom@beehaw.org 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

No one deserves acid thrown at them AND young children should not be tried as adults.

Justice exist both for victims and perpretators. So that victims can obtain sentencing of their agressors, and that agressors get a fair and impartial sentencing, taking their age into account.

[-] princessnorah 5 points 1 month ago

I never said it was an either or? Do you think I, as a trans woman, am not completely horrified about this act?

[-] Hirom@beehaw.org 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Good point, I misread that comment. So I edited my reply accordingly.

This is a serious crime and they deserve to be punished accordingly. And no matter how dumb and hateful they, they're minors so a judge can't ignore their age and relevant law to set a sentence.

[-] SCmSTR 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Just gonna leave this here...

[-] Catoblepas@piefed.blahaj.zone 34 points 1 month ago

It drives me nuts when news articles mention but don’t link to the Go Fund Me page: https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-dianas-recovery-from-acid-attack

[-] RymrgandsDaughter 20 points 1 month ago

where yhe hell do kids get acid from?

[-] squirrel 17 points 1 month ago

Unfortunately with some basic chemical knowledge it can be obtained rather easily from household items or hardware stores: Batteries, cleaning products, bleach,...

[-] Ledericas@lemm.ee 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

probably battery acid. HCL might be more difficult you would have to get them from industrial sources. h2so4 is more acidic than hcl.

[-] Cube6392@beehaw.org 5 points 1 month ago

super easy, barely an inconvenience

[-] nickwitha_k@lemmy.sdf.org 19 points 1 month ago

Great. We've got acid attacks now. Fuck this.

[-] sexyskinnybitch 9 points 1 month ago
[-] Sunflier@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Really? It is unbelievable in this political climate?

[-] sexyskinnybitch 1 points 1 month ago

Yes , it is. This has nothing to do with politics.

[-] yessikg 8 points 1 month ago

WTF? It's a literal hate crime, what could be more political than that?

[-] Sunflier@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Right?! We have an administration that probably won't prosecute this as a hate crime and plea to down to a misdemeanor. Hate is the vehicle that the administration operates in, so hate crimes will rise because the authoritarian regime has green lit those crimes.

*Edit: To summarize - when you elect a Nazi, don't be surprised when people do Nazi-adjacent things like hate crimes.
