And here in the US, I've also got to worry about the tariff shortages 🙃

We are getting rid of the people who detect and report pandemics. First, you will only notice high absentee rates at the office. Then you'll start getting large numbers of invitations to funerals for people who seemed perfectly healthy the last time you saw them. Then, you'll develop a scrachy feeling in your throat. Good luck...

It won't be a pandemic. The rest of the world isn't stupid enough to appoint an antivaxer as secretary of health.

even if you achieve herd immunity, there will always be breakthrough cases, as with all pandemics. vaccines without respirators, contact tracing, purifying the air, etc etc will lead to the same catastrophic results as covid.

most countries abandoned basic health measures for covid, and that should alarm everyone for the next pandemic

When the measles get to out-evolve the vaccine in the US petridish, shit could get nasty.

Start accepting us refugees and I'll be happy to hear that 😅

Pandemics don't have to be global. It's just over a large area.

[-] owsei@programming.dev 4 points 1 day ago

WHO defines it as "an epidemic occurring worldwide, or over a very wide area, crossing international boundaries..."

[-] general_kitten@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 day ago

usually the definition of pandemic at least says it has to be multiple continents

[-] Fredthefishlord 3 points 1 day ago

I'm actually pretty sure it doesn't say it has to be

[-] entwine413@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago

It usually doesn't say it has to be, it just uses multiple continents as an example of a large geographic area. Of course, there are multiple different definitions out there.

Regardless, it's silly to assume the virus would stay in the US.

Hang on, what's going on over there?

[-] 9point6@lemmy.world 51 points 1 day ago

They're having both a bird flu & measles problem at the same time and burying their heads in the sand about it.

Oh and they fired a load of people doing Ebola research

And this one isn't strictly a pandemic, but the USA is currently basically carpet bombing parts of Mexico (with their consent) to prevent the northward progression of screwworms—which are even worse than you're currently imagining.

I've probably forgotten something else biological that mother nature is currently doing to indicate her displeasure in the politically driven ignorance they've got going on over there.

I'm imagining Tremors and this is worse you say?

I recall a story, can't remember where I read it, where a creator deity demonstrates their displeasure with the leader's treatment of a downtrodden minority by sending a large number of "plagues". I remember there was a plague of flies, all the livestock started dying of sudden disease, and an epidemic of boils broke out... Hmm... If only the US were filled with people who believed in the literal interpretation of certain old books...

ETA: of course, that would require these people to be able to read.

[-] StrawberryCreamSoda 1 points 25 minutes ago

Some of them do believe it's a biblical plague, but they think it's because of woke or gay.

Not looking forward to the screw worms

[-] kboy101222@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

You know it's bad if any foreign country is asking the USA to send military planes...

[-] Spacehooks@reddthat.com 11 points 1 day ago

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
