At the risk of asking a dumb question, isn't parading military units down public streets the sort of thing communist dictatorships do?

I know I've seen video of this sort of thing from places like North Korea and Soviet Russia, can't say I've really seen it from the states.

[-] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 49 points 6 days ago

and fascist dictators too. so it is more of a dictator fetish

[-] futatorius@lemm.ee 6 points 6 days ago

And now a fetish of dickless-tators too.

[-] piratekaiser@lemm.ee 34 points 6 days ago

Yes, although it has nothing to do with communism and everything to do with dictatorship, ultra nationalism and the strongman image.

[-] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 19 points 6 days ago

Most communism has nothing to do with communism.

[-] Tiger666@lemmy.ca 6 points 6 days ago

Well said and very true.

[-] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 16 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Hitler and Mussolini had it and im sure the romans and greeks did it too. It just feels like an attempt at normalizing war in the mind of the people.

[-] conditional_soup@lemm.ee 17 points 6 days ago

Everything that they said would come true under communism has come true under capitalism

[-] Zomg@lemmy.world 19 points 6 days ago

Yeah, basically. It's treating the countries service members and equipment as personally owned property to play with.

Many countries have military parades. Not just dictatorships. France has a military parade on Bastille Day. It’s a tradition started in 1880. The Netherlands has one during Veterans Day, Mexico on Independence Day and Italy during Republic Day to name a few.

[-] ValeCrafter@lemmy.world 30 points 6 days ago

And the US on Trump's birthday. Find the odd one of the group..

[-] Pelicanen@midwest.social 8 points 6 days ago

It's also on the day that the US Army has existed for 250 years and supposedly has been in planning for two years per APNews. Not to say Trump won't make it about himself but it's not just his birthday.

[-] Tiger666@lemmy.ca 8 points 6 days ago

The latter being the only reason the military is going along with this.

The first time, orange mussolini was in power he wanted a parade, so they had to create a bylaw in DC saying there would be no tanks in the streets because the pavement couldn't take it. That is how they stopped this stupid show of self agrandization the first time.

Maybe, if this goes ahead, they can find a way to parade all the aircraft carriers and nuclear subs that terrorize the world every day.

That isn't a dumb question. It's a correct observation.

On top being a dicktorial huge waste of money, the M1 Abrams is an extremely heavy tank to use on roads that haven't been well maintained. Given his habits and hissy fits, the Donvict is going to stick whatever mayor for the bill to repair those roads. This was one of the reasons the Pentagon denied tanks last time for a parade request and proposed Striker Vehicles instead. He got mad as he does in his man child ways because he wanted the big tanks . Probably wants soldiers to do the high heel kick march as is tradition when preparing for a world war. The higher the kick the higher the success rate.

[-] RidderSport@feddit.org 13 points 6 days ago

Sorry have to disagree on your last sentence there. The Wehrmacht didn't kick particularly high - unlike in Soviet tradition

[-] qarbone@lemmy.world 14 points 6 days ago

as is tradition when preparing for a world war. The higher the kick the higher the success rate.

And that's probably why they lost! Gotta get that hip flexion going!

[-] JusticeForPorygon 28 points 6 days ago

Sounds like a great day for mass protests

[-] Ledericas@lemm.ee 24 points 6 days ago

he so jealous of Putin's birthday parades he wants to emulate.

[-] jonne@infosec.pub 7 points 6 days ago

I think he was inspired by the French défilé when he was invited during his first term. The Pentagon said no then because tanks would rip up the streets in DC. Looks like this time he successfully captured the Pentagon and other agencies to get what he wants.

[-] Tiger666@lemmy.ca 2 points 6 days ago

We'll see about that.

[-] futatorius@lemm.ee 17 points 6 days ago

100,000 people should show up and all of them moon him.

[-] w3dd1e@lemm.ee 8 points 6 days ago

I don’t mind being shot standing up for what’s right, but I don’t want to be shot in the ass.

[-] rayyy@lemmy.world 18 points 6 days ago

The White House is denying reports that it plans to hold a military parade in Washington on President Donald Trump’s birthday in June. But now claim it would be held on June 14, which happens to be the birthday of both the U.S. Army and the dictator-in-chief. Krasnov wanted the Pentagon to explore staging a military parade in the nation’s capital in his first term, after witnessing Bastille Day celebrations in Paris. “I don’t know. We’re gonna have to try and top it,”

[-] gnate@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago

Everytime he says "I don't know" you can replace that with "I feel insecure."

[-] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 4 points 6 days ago

I wouldn't mind celebrating Bastille Day. Krasnov can be the centerpiece of the occasion. CHOP

[-] 0x0@lemmy.zip 16 points 6 days ago

So many guns will e parading near him that day... sure hope there's no accidental shots...

[-] Schnabeltierplaisir@feddit.org 4 points 5 days ago

Sure do hope none of those tanks has a canister round loaded by accident...

[-] D_C@lemm.ee 7 points 6 days ago

A couple of thousand well planned and well aimed shots would be ideal.

[-] skozzii@lemmy.ca 13 points 6 days ago

I could have sworn this was a fake story, if this is actually real we have gone full North Korea...

[-] halferect@lemmy.world 17 points 6 days ago

Seems like a good day to.protest

[-] frog_brawler@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

Only if you want a bunch of military goons saying that the protest is against the Army.

[-] thedruid@lemmy.world 14 points 6 days ago

Fuck this guy and his cronies. Fuck them right in the egg McMuffin

[-] Elkot@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago

The Germans liked parades too, back when they were goose-stepping across Europe

[-] mlg@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago

3rd world immigrants watching the 3rd world dictator experience come to the US lol.

Next the Pentagon will release a national we love the American government song lmao

[-] frog_brawler@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

Coincidentally, Trump’s birthday this year and the 250th anniversary of the US Army fall on the same date. If the parade is for the military and not for Trump it’s not really that unreasonable.

[-] wanderwisley@lemm.ee 2 points 5 days ago

Well we know where to show up and boo.

[-] MolecularCactus1324@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago
[-] Ebby@lemmy.ssba.com 184 points 1 week ago

Hey DOGE, I found some wasteful spending.

That'd make an ok protest sign.

[-] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 164 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

A reminder that Q1 25 federal spending under Trump has increased over Biden's Q1 24 spending. A reminder that tariffing the fuck out if the world will only exponentially increase spending.

Not that anyone pro-Trump/conservative actually cares about reigning in spending. It's all an excuse to punish brown people and poor people.
