This is what happens when we let conservatives have any sort of power in society

[-] zildjiandrummer1@lemmy.world 16 points 2 months ago

Gonna get downvoted, but conservative ideals should be present to some minor extent to balance things out. I don't mean modern conservatives or Republicans, but the concept of fiscal conservatism (e.g. preventing waste in the military). I'm not talking about the fIsCaL cOnSeRvAtIsM that current Republicans preach either, like hollowing out social programs to give tax cuts to their buddies. So yeah that's of course not what we have now, but there should be a healthy balance for that kind of thing.

[-] Transtronaut 31 points 2 months ago

The problem is that what you describe is not conservatism, it's just basic competence in governance. It's an impressive achievement of the radical right that they have managed to get people to conflate the two.

[-] zildjiandrummer1@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Sure that's fair. Whatever you want to label it, there needs to be some kind of balances against full progressivism so it doesn't go extremely far to the left. I say this as a pretty far left progressive in most things, but have some minor conservative ideals (such as individuals wanting to support themselves without relying on outside sources). Again, I'm well aware that's not modern Conservatism in the US these days.

You mean we shouldn't have social welfare programs?

No public healthcare, no public housing, no public infrastructure, no public health services, no free public education, no social security, no universal basic income

How are any of these bad?

Knowing Better has an incredibly informative video about the history of meritocracy, rugged individualism, and fiscal responsibility in America. I think you'd find it interesting

You won't get downvoted. Ideally you'd have both parties suck it up and work together and combine ideologies. But.. well you know... Babies

The people who say this tend to forget that if you only take the "good things" from conservatism it ceases to be conservatism. The conservative ideology is garbage and only leads countries to a sort of destructive cannabalism.

Nervous laughing ..... as the police keep pounding at my door

Yeah, it's going to be hilarious to be fighting in WWIII while everyone tries to convince themselves that it isn't WWIII

[-] peregrin5@lemm.ee 86 points 2 months ago

Hopefully it's just Civil War II and not WWIII. The rest of the world doesn't deserve to be dragged into our shit.

[-] SHOW_ME_YOUR_ASSHOLE@lemm.ee 56 points 2 months ago

Even if it was just contained to US soil we'd still call WWIII like we do with the World Series.

[-] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 18 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Whether it's because of us or fascism is just trending globally, the rest of the world is already thoroughly dragged into our shit. We're not the only ones having this fight, we're just the most-visible and possibly farthest-along outside of Russia, Turkmenistan, North Korea, etc.

[-] Serinus@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

The US might be the biggest problem, but we're not where this started.

[-] cm0002@lemmy.world 13 points 2 months ago

It's Civil War 2: Electric AI killing machine-aloo

[-] isolatedscotch@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 2 months ago

It's not like they can rely of self sufficient solar panels, they just lobbied them out of existance with climate change denial

[-] IrateAnteater@sh.itjust.works 12 points 2 months ago

It will be WWIII either way. A US civil war would leave a massive power vacuum, and a whole bunch of candidates trying to fill it.

[-] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 months ago

.... like I said WWIII while everyone tries to convince themselves that it isn't WWIII

In my country you need to be accused of being a communist in order to be arrested. Well sometimes there were no accusations just arrests, but at least we were an official dictatorship.

Signed: anywhere in South America in the 80s. Thanks ~~Obama~~ McArthur

Epiphany: are climate scientists a tool of communist hoaxes? Dang, you're all getting arrested soon aren't y'all

2 CH~3~NO~2~+O~2~→2 CO+3H~2~O+N~2~

[-] isolatedscotch@discuss.tchncs.de 17 points 2 months ago

That's not balanced though

4 CH~3~NO~2~ + O~2~ → 4 CO + 6 H~2~O + 2 N~2~

also, why are we burning nitromethane?

[-] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago

burning

Well thats one word for rapid decomposition.

[-] isolatedscotch@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 2 months ago

Nitromethane doesn't explode on it's own under normal conditions

[-] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Ok then. Why don't you explain to the class what conditions are requires to sensitive, since you seem pedantically obtuse to getting the point of why people might leave specific details out.

[-] isolatedscotch@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

First of all, sorry for the harsh response, I was in a hurry and I probably passed off as a dickhead

secondly tho, from the video you sent yourself at 9:43 "Nitromethane, all by itself, is a high explosive, but it is so inert, it's almost impossible to set it off"

And that's what I (probably in a bad way) implied in my first message, nitromethane requires to be sensitized with something like ammonium nitrate (to make ANNM) or with ethylene diammine (to make PLX) (or really with any basic substance, even sodium hydroxide you get as a drain cleaner can work, but it gets too sensible and can detonate on its own while you work on it)

Here's another video that shows nitromethane just plainly burning

[-] Draegur@lemm.ee 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Edit: I originally had a very hostile response here because the "obtuse" comment struck a nerve.

Some people aren't "obtuse" by choice.

Many people, especially neurodiverse ones, look at your behavior and find it "obtuse" if not outright disingenuous and obfuscatory.

I realized you may also be feeling frustrated and maybe didn't mean to be uncharitable and hostile to differently operating minds.

I may not understand what you were trying to imply, but it crossed my mind that this may be beside the point because the actual point is that we're living in a situation where, if people actually said out loud what was REALLY on their minds, it would get them in trouble. And this is because the world is extremely dangerous and volatile right now, we're all probably feeling very much IN DANGER from it, and not being able to talk about it honestly and plainly is indeed VERY PAINFUL.

So I retract my reflexive and poorly considered demand that you explain yourself, and I merely instead suggest that the person you were responding to wasn't trying to entrap you. I was just as confused about the implication as they were, I surmise, but merely knowing that the implications are ... "Spicy" ... is enough.

Sorry for being mean about it.

And the above respondent also knows enough to recognize what has been left out. You not knowing what has been left out is fine. Its not fine for them.

[-] Draegur@lemm.ee 3 points 2 months ago

I realized shortly after I posted and before I even saw your response that I was not being rational. I apologize.
