Got a message from my manager regarding a minor complaint made against me. Apparently I use big words in emails and some people find it intimidating.

We had a good chuckle about it. I was hoping he'd tell me who it was so I could send that person a link to a dictionary/thesaurus page.

[-] TinyBreak@aussie.zone 11 points 2 years ago

Straight to hr for being smart. We only want dumb people working at this company.

[-] MeanElevator@aussie.zone 7 points 2 years ago

Big words make sad and angry.

Make stop please.

In hindsight, I really wish I'd just posted this yesterday:

All of my best responses are well after I've already sent them.

[-] CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 7 points 2 years ago

It was a little bizarre that somebody took your name.

Once upon a time there was a pretty cool nightclub. It was quite a swanky place. It had its regulars, drop ins and lurkers. It was open to everyone 24 hours 7 days a week. But one day the owners decided that the management wasn't that important so management organised a mutiny. They closed the main dance floor and kept the VIP area open but still that wasn't enough. So they closed the place baracading themselves in. Some patrons were confused as to why they weren't allowed access anymore. Where's everybody gone? Where do I go now?

Then some bright spark said "I know a place. Follow me". Now this new place wasn't as flash as the last (I think it was an old factory in the back streets of the industrial area in Footscray) but it was free and it was safe. At first a few trickled in to have a look around. Then word got around and more and more turned up. The old lurkers turned up to cause a stir but generally everyone's been happy to have a regular place to meet again.

P.s.There's always that dodgy looking guy in the corner with a leather jacket on chewing his gum and selling shit.

I’m so grateful the DT lives on. I don’t have a large social circle and it really helps seeing friendly faces/ usernames with lil chats & updates. 🖤

[-] jaybb3rw0cky@aussie.zone 10 points 2 years ago

Me too! My social circle could fit around my pinky finger, but the DT became my home away from home. This place might be different, but at least the company is the same <3

[-] the_procrastinata@aussie.zone 7 points 2 years ago

Same! I was really feeling lost at the thought of losing this supportive, beautiful group of champs.

Hello DT, happy housewarming for the new residence. This platform is going to take me a bit of getting used to. But nice to see so many familiar names. Thankyou very much to @RustyRaven@aussie.zone and anyone else who did the work to make this happen. I appreciate your tech skills and initiative!

Edit: I have no idea how to tag people properly, hope that was it.

[-] RustyRaven@aussie.zone 8 points 2 years ago

Yes the tag worked! @lodion@aussie.zone is the one who set this place up, I just followed them here and made myself at home when I saw @dumblederp@dumblederp@aussie.zone had made a daily thread here!

Plan to use this shutdown as a prompt to spend more time off my computer: failed

Guys/gals/others/all, gotta say, having been here a week or so, it's neat seeing you all turn up.

[-] TinyBreak@aussie.zone 13 points 2 years ago

I looked at it Monday I think and was a bit put off by the lack of numbers. But Tuesday morning, it became apparent the writing on the Wall and figured I may as well help get started or build the numbers. Rome wasn’t built in a day and all that.

[-] jaybb3rw0cky@aussie.zone 7 points 2 years ago

I can only speak for myself but I took the 12-14 blackout as a way to detox a little from my overuse of Reddit. Came back to some messages from a few (Thanks @TinyBreak@aussie.zone and @MeanElevator@aussie.zone ) saying this is where most have migrated to.

But yeah, I do wonder if we've missed some people given the DT has completely shut down.

Had to make a decision to fire someone today. Haven't actioned it yet, but got approved by one of the big dogs.

Tried so hard to give them a chance with written warning and performance improvement plan, but they think everyone else is the problem, they're carrying their department, and that everyone around them is too sensitive.

Hard decision to make in this climate but I've got a whole team to look after that don't deserve being bullied.

Feel more confident than ever in this job when my tough calls are backed like this.

[-] MeanElevator@aussie.zone 13 points 2 years ago

You can make it fun by singing

If you work here and you know it, clap your hands

And when everyone is about to clap, turn to the person who's getting sacked and just say Not you, though

My husband has come home with a lemon meringue pie slice just to cheer me up and because he's been using my car. I don't mind receiving payments in the form of dessert.

just as a PSA, if you're thinking 'a smoothie with a not quite ripe banana will still be ok', you need to go to the nearest mirror and say to yourself 'no, no it will not be ok'

[-] Thornburywitch@aussie.zone 9 points 2 years ago

Bananas should NOT be crunchy - this is an abomination of the very nature of bananas. Doesn't matter what shape they are either. Fully endorse OP.

I really hate past me right now. Stupid cow decided to volunteer to do overtime tomorrow, so now I'm sitting here contemplating the fact I have to get up stupidly early tomorrow morning.☹️

I had a really proud moment today where I actually demonstrated to myself that I am capable of my new role. I really do need to stop doubting myself.

[-] landsharkkidd@aussie.zone 8 points 2 years ago

I feel this, imposter syndrome is massive atm. Especially since my new boss wants me to be put into a leadership role and I'm like "UHHHHH I AM STILL A BABY!" (let's ignore the fact that I am turning 28 in a week...). I'll get there with you, slowly. But eventually.

Lasagne is ready. Happy days.

[-] tone_212@aussie.zone 11 points 2 years ago

You know when you fantasise of saying it like it is to your employer? Well, I did that today (within reason). Nothing insulting or anything, but some very stern feedback given. Communicating various issues with my role and management decisions that another person would have probably just resigned over. It felt SO GOOD. Adrenaline was flowing. Let's see if things improve from this, if not I'm done. I am trying to salvage the situation.

[-] Force_majeure122@aussie.zone 11 points 2 years ago

I can't help myself but go and check out Hot posts in /r/all occasionally. Quality and variety has dropped off massively since shutdown, pretty interesting to see.

[-] bananafungus@aussie.zone 8 points 2 years ago

Noticed some of the posts on generic subs sort of look like bots have posted them, r/askreddit is especially bad. On another note I keep reflexively opening Reddit on my phone and annoying myself.

I should stop working. It's been hours and nobody has asked me to do anything so I've just started to decipher code that's written by a colleague. What is wrong with me.

[-] Isaac95@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago

Glad to see there's already a Melbourne sub going strong on Lemmy!

[-] StudChud@aussie.zone 12 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

exodustwas an exodus of redditors leaving the platform,
many subs are restricted, many more are private.
the protest continues, a desperate cry for reform,
with the DT closed down, r/melbourne went quiet.
some went to discord, others flocked here
to vent, to query, to share, and commiserate
thank you to those who set up this sphere,
though new to me, to all of you I appreciate.

I did a favour for a Terry White chemist today and repaired a digital lockset door handle. The owner gave me a bottle of multivitamin for it🥴

Now I’m thinking to myself, do I appear vitamin deficient ?

I just ordered stuff from Coles to be delivered because I'm not feeling so great, and I reckon even with the elevated prices/fee I'm still going to save money because I'm not wandering the supermarket picking up things I didn't go in to get/things I don't need/things I absolutely should not be buying.

Hard to walk out of a supermarket these days without spending near $100 with my wheelie nanna bag but I got away with this for $40 delivered.

Update: the packer couldn't find 3 of my items, 2 of which were the most important components of what I wanted for dinner. Welp.

TIL: Typescript is a computer programming language, not a font.

If I learn a computer language, can I call myself bilingual?

Dammit, so the Melbourne sub going private thing smashed my last 6 months of journaling on the DT. Had I known I could have copied it. Anyone an old melbourne mod here? Any ideas where it might be webarchived? I messaged the old mods today to try and see if they'll grant me access for a little while to copy it. I should have doing it all along, but I obvioulsy didn't foresee this and I had no warning all our old comments would disappear. eck.

EDIT in other news I went to the st kilda town hall for the pop up drag storytime run by rainbow community angels in the wake of another drag storytime event being cancelled due to the disgustiing behaviour of a few. It was cold and wet but our hearts were warmed. happy pride. again.

Think I'm finally getting the hang of keeping the fire going so I don't have to sit over it and feed it. Mind you I have had to dash over and madly stoke it with paper a couple of times.
