Looking for fiction with good trans representation that my family might read. Need books that:

  1. Normalize trans experiences for cis individuals,
  2. Match specific genres/themes for each family member, and
  3. Don't scream "trans" from the cover.

Dad's into Tom Clancy, so a military submarine thriller with trans representation would be ideal—super specific, right? Wonder how that would play out!

In case you didn’t know… https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2013/12/30/242429836/why-being-gypped-hurts-the-roma-more-than-it-hurts-you

"I encounter a lot of people who tell me that they never knew the word 'gypped' had anything to do with gypsies, or that it's offensive — especially when the word is heard not read," says University of Texas at Austin professor Ian Hancock, who was born in Britain to Romani parents. "My response to them is, That's okay. You didn't know but now you do. So stop using it. It may mean nothing to you, but when we hear it, it still hurts."

I know it has its issues, but with the app right now I have to load the same post within a web browser to see what emoji someone used… these can completely change the meaning of a message considering how much variety they have.

In app version at current:

And no, when I click the file in the app it doesn’t load the emoji. Rather I just get a blank greeted out image view screen.

Disclaimer
"Passing" especially for others is not the goal, although none of us can deny that is does feel good when a stranger even for a second correctly genders you.
Although, it sucks like hell if they "correct" themselves right afterward.

Looking for tutorial recommendations, because I have watched a few that were not that informative and kinda condescending.

I have been kinda winging it with the makeup knowledge my Ex taught me, but kinda think I could do better.

Important not from that article:

It’s not the first time we’ve seen big tech companies attempt to trademark common terms or goods. However, a study by the Tech Transparency Project found that Apple filed more trademark oppositions over a three-year period than Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Facebook combined.

If you think trademarking of common terms is a bad thing at all, apple seems to be the worst among big tech firms.

P.S. this "Android Authority" article put apple in the correct light in my opinion after reading it, and I use a lot of Apple products.

It isn't even their logo, they are trying to copyright images of apples.

“We have a hard time understanding this, because it’s not like they’re trying to protect their bitten apple,” Fruit Union Suisse director Jimmy Mariéthoz was quoted as saying by the outlet. “Their objective here is really to own the rights to an actual apple, which, for us, is something that is really almost universal… that should be free for everyone to use.”

I think among other issues would be the Gmail-ification and iMessage-ification of the fediverse. What I mean by that is open standards like email are dominated today by many people using Gmail accounts as it is popular, “free”, and comes with a ton of features. Then google started “walling off their garden” by adding features that only work between gmail accounts. Similarly, apple also took the open standard SMS and started adding on features only available between other iPhones.

What we might see is some of the coolest features the fediverse has ever seen, but it will come at the cost of most users ignoring or dealing less with "irrelevant" things not on meta ran instances.

Hope we can resist such a change, but that is what I am concerned about.

Here is a crazy idea, Pay Workers A Livable Wage and price goods accordingly... that is the easiest step forward as I would be tempted to ask for more because profits are unpaid wages.

‘Make It So’: ‘Star Trek’ and Its Debt to Revolutionary Socialism

Beginning in 1966, the plot of “Star Trek” closely followed Posadas’s propositions. After a nuclear third world war (which Posadas also believed would lead to socialist revolution), Vulcan aliens visit Earth, welcoming them into a galactic federation and delivering replicator technology that would abolish scarcity. Humans soon unify as a species, formally abolishing money and all hierarchies of race, gender and class.

This is a requested feature that I am sure the devs will address eventually. Although based on their recent feedback they are focusing on stability and optimization to handle the spike in people at the moment. What I personally have done is set my feed to “subscribed” only. This allows you much more control of which communities you see. However I do see how individually blocking instances would be nice in the future.

Big shoutout to our local server goddess @supakaity@lemmy.blahaj.zone and moderation champion @ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone! They keep blahaj.zone running smoothly and bigotry-free. We appreciate all their hard work and dedication. You both rock! 🙌👏

I hold a differing viewpoint

Lemmygrad, like any community centered around a particular political ideology, faces challenges in maintaining effective moderation. However, it is evident that they are making concerted efforts to moderate their platform and proactively address instances of bigotry. This aligns with the approach we adopt within our own community.

Lemmygrad enforces a comprehensive set of rules that explicitly prohibit various forms of bigotry, including racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, and xenophobia. Furthermore, they have implemented measures to prevent and remove content that falls under the category of pornographic or sexually explicit material, even if it is labeled as not safe for work. Additionally, Lemmygrad explicitly disallows the propagation of dangerous Nazi ideologies, such as right-deviationist factions like patsocs, nazbols, strasserists, duginists, and similar groups.

While Lemmygrad operates as a socialist instance with a specific ideological focus, it is important to recognize that the community is not a monolithic entity. Within Lemmygrad, there are individuals who engage in discussions that encompass differing perspectives, including those who acknowledge and do not deny certain historical events.

While political disagreements may exist, it is evident that Lemmygrad is dedicated to ensuring an inclusive and respectful environment by actively moderating their platform and taking measures to prevent and remove instances of bigotry. Similarly, we strive to foster such an atmosphere within our own instance.
