Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said shooting people who cross the border is the only tool the state is not using to deter migrants because the Biden administration would sue the state for “murder.”

“We are using every tool that can be used from building a border wall, to building these border barriers, to passing this law that I signed that led to another lawsuit by the Biden administration where I signed a law making it illegal for somebody to enter Texas from another country,” Abbott said on “The Dana Loesch Show” last week.

“The only thing that we’re not doing is we’re not shooting people who come across the border, because of course the Biden administration would charge us with murder,” Abbott later added.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa blasted Abbott’s remarks in a statement issued Thursday.

“The only thing stopping Greg Abbott from ordering law enforcement to shoot migrant women and children are murder charges. Time and time again, Greg Abbott and Texas Republicans have made it abundantly clear they have no morality or humanity,” Hinojosa said in a lengthy statement.

International law too. They have the right to seek amnesty. You murder them and there will nowhere to hide.

[-] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 70 points 8 months ago

Yes, it's against the law to murder people, very good.

It's supposed to get cold there this weekend Greg, maybe worry less about migrants and worry more about keeping the lights on.

[-] misterundercoat@lemmy.world 26 points 8 months ago

Cold snap? Thanks for reminding me that I need to have the staff prepare Mr. Cruz's usual suite. He gets cranky if he has to wait too long in the executive lounge, despite free margaritas and a breathtaking view of the Carribean.

This was brilliantly written. Thank you!

[-] loki_d20@lemmy.world 7 points 8 months ago

The same people who say without religion we would all be murderers.

[-] Transporter_Room_3@startrek.website 55 points 8 months ago

Wow, imagine PROUDLY proclaiming you would be a psychopathic murderer of people who walked over an imaginary line with absolutely no remorse, but the only thing stopping you is prison time...

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 8 points 8 months ago

This is why they're such strong supporters of violence police and incarceration - they believe society is only held together by violence because that's the only thing stopping them.

[-] RedditReject@lemmy.world 34 points 8 months ago

What was that thing these religious fools like to say? Thou shalt not kill?

Or is he just displaying his "Christian" pro-life values

[-] djsoren19@yiffit.net 7 points 8 months ago

Yeah, they need sky daddy to tell them not to do it, because they have no morals or value of their own.

[-] RedditReject@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

Their "sky daddy" has explicitly told them not to do it. They just don't care

[-] DoucheBagMcSwag@lemmy.dbzer0.com 30 points 8 months ago

Translation...if Trump gets reelected , they're going to start killing

[-] dhork@lemmy.world 29 points 8 months ago

If one of those migrants is pregnant, though, then wouldn't a nosy neighbor in Texas get to sue them for murder, or something?

[-] WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world 19 points 8 months ago

Silly rabbit. That's only when it's politically advantageous. Fascists have no problem aborting immigrants or their babies.

[-] VikingHippie@lemmy.wtf 7 points 8 months ago
[-] dhork@lemmy.world 6 points 8 months ago

That's Arizona. Specifically, Maricopa County and its attention-whore sheriff.

A totally different fascist hellhole than Texas.

[-] VikingHippie@lemmy.wtf 3 points 8 months ago

Different? Sure. Hardly TOTALLY different, though. The two hellholes have a lot of atrocious similarities.

[-] Coach@lemmy.world 24 points 8 months ago

Alternate headline: "Abbott: Hunting season for migrants is open."

What a sick fuck!

[-] Etterra@lemmy.world 22 points 8 months ago

Remember, Republicans have "Christian" values.

[-] cmoney@lemmy.world 12 points 8 months ago

~~WWJD~~ WWSWAJD What would straight white American Jesus do?

[-] LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 8 months ago

Maaaan these christofascists would HATE the real Jesus if he came back

He'd definitely free all the detained immigrants and flog the people who put them there

Texas Gov. and professional little piss baby Greg Abbott

FTFY

[-] crystalmerchant@lemmy.world 20 points 8 months ago

Ah, so the reason you don't shoot innocent people is not because it's immoral? It's because you'll get caught?

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 16 points 8 months ago

“The only thing that we’re not doing is we’re not shooting people who come across the border, because of course the Biden administration would charge us with murder,” Abbott later added.

He didn't clarify that immediately, he took a while. Hmm.

[-] darth_helmet@sh.itjust.works 2 points 8 months ago

Pesky democrats and their whole “charging murderers with murder” shtick.

[-] AshMan85@lemmy.world 16 points 8 months ago

Prolife except when it comes to murdering people that are not white

[-] charonn0@startrek.website 13 points 8 months ago

Remember this when he talks about being "pro-life".

[-] jordanlund@lemmy.world 7 points 8 months ago

Feds aren’t charging them with human trafficking for the bus/flight “relocations”…

This is the best summary I could come up with:

“We are using every tool that can be used from building a border wall, to building these border barriers, to passing this law that I signed that led to another lawsuit by the Biden administration where I signed a law making it illegal for somebody to enter Texas from another country,” Abbott said on “The Dana Loesch Show” last week.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa blasted Abbott’s remarks in a statement issued Thursday.

“The only thing stopping Greg Abbott from ordering law enforcement to shoot migrant women and children are murder charges.

Texas has installed razor wire barriers alongside its border, which the Biden administration asked the Supreme Court to weigh in on last week.

We laid down this razor wire, hundreds of miles of it that was an effective deterrent and repelled migrants from entering the state of Texas,” Abbott told host Dana Loesch.

The Justice Department already filed a lawsuit against Texas last week after warning the state not to enforce the new law.

What should America do about the border?

[-] Three_word_reply@lemmy.world 25 points 8 months ago

Accept those that come and act to integrate them into society. They come seeing a better life and reprieve from persecution, just as the immigrants from Europe through the 1700s, 1800s, and early 1900s did.

[-] Blackout@kbin.social 16 points 8 months ago

I am so for this. I would love for immigrants to come into my area and open businesses in all the empty storefronts and do all the hard work in restoring a lost economy. I don't know what conservatives are trying to protect? The long picked over bones of the 50s?

[-] Zombiepirate@lemmy.world 11 points 8 months ago

I don't know what conservatives are trying to protect?

The "white race" is the lie sold by people like Tucker Carlson and his promotion of the white supremacist "Great Replacement theory." Its why Trump said immigrants are "poisoning the blood" of our country.

There's a reason they were both endorsed by David Duke in 2020.

[-] mkwt@lemmy.world 22 points 8 months ago

Practical answer: pour funding into immigration courts and hire a bunch more immigration judges, and scale up the pro bono legal aid.

The phenomena of mass asylum requests are driven by the 4 year wait times to get a case adjudicated. If we got that down to a couple of months, then fewer people with weak cases would attempt it.

[-] originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 15 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

these people dont seem to understand the migration actually helps our economy. if immigrants are successfully integrated with jobs and taxes, etc. they cause less legal problems and are a benefit to the community.

but they cant see past their racism. this is all racists all the way down. there is no border problem accept when we choose for it to be a problem.

we spend 2 Billion dollars a day to protect the planet with our 'defense'... but we cant seem to figure out how to just let immigrants come in and get jobs that no one else wants??

[-] Coach@lemmy.world 10 points 8 months ago

Start tracking the number of migrants leaving the country, for starters.

Google "circular migration," if you want to get a full grasp of what's actually happening at the border and what the politicians don't want you to know.

[-] BrianTheeBiscuiteer@lemmy.world 6 points 8 months ago

NOT shoot people for a start.

https://bookwyrm.social/book/116487/s/open-borders

Read this. It's in most public libraries, either digitally or physically, if not both.

[-] ghostdoggtv@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago

Open that bitch up and make America truly great. Israel is a false idol, if their God was true then America could be Zion for all people. Instead, religious fascists allow corporations to enslave the public to make room for their own agenda. We should immediately defund Israel and put that money into the border and use it to fund asylum programs, especially for Palestineans and Ukrainians displaced by their genocidal neighbors, as atonement for our own genocidal past.
