Suggested serving sizes have never been realistic. Manipulated by the manufacturer to make us think the food is lower in calories than it actually is.

In reality we all serve ourselves a fifth of a jar. List THOSE calories on the label please.

[-] VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world 1 points 58 minutes ago

I think these things should at least have the total calories also listed, and not just from multiplying the (frequently rounded down) serving size calories.

[-] skidicarus@sh.itjust.works 3 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Peanut butter typically has a serving size of one or two tablespoons. That's entirely reasonable.

[-] Fredthefishlord 4 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

No that's not reasonable wtf

[-] bhamlin@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

Maybe for someone with a peanut allergy. The rest of us are out here using cups.

[-] funkajunk@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago

Cup rationing virgin vs. Litre chugging Chad

[-] West_of_West@piefed.social 17 points 10 hours ago

Half my diet was stopping eating peanut butter. The other half was drinking less. Helth

[-] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 12 points 10 hours ago

Peanut butter is delicious but it's basically the neutron star of food calories! Makes me sad.

[-] nomy@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 hours ago

That's one of the reasons peanut butter is an incredible survival food. Nutrient/calorie dense, doesn't need refrigeration, shelf stable for a long long time, it's delicious. It checks a lot of boxes that not many other foods can.

[-] forgetfulmeat@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

I'll do more pushups before I eat less peanut butyerm calories ain't bad if you're using them!

[-] West_of_West@piefed.social 2 points 6 hours ago

15 ml of natural peanut butter equals about 200 pushups. You're gonna be ripped!

[-] DigDoug@lemmy.world 31 points 12 hours ago

It's the recommended serving sizes that are out of touch with reality.

[-] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 2 points 4 hours ago

Damn personal size potato chip bag said 2.5 servings!

A single serving was like 6 chips!

[-] obvs@lemmy.world 5 points 10 hours ago

Yeah, it should be illegal to list serving sizes that disconnected from reality. They should be MANDATED to have the first column list the nutrition information for the container as a whole, and then let them put whatever ridiculous lie, but it should only be allowed in a second column, that I can ignore after seeing the first column that shows what the container actually contains.

[-] DigDoug@lemmy.world 6 points 10 hours ago

I don't know how they do it elsewhere, but here in New Zealand, they put "per 100g" measurements on the labels which are really helpful.

[-] fyzzlefry@retrolemmy.com 5 points 6 hours ago

Everything in the US is a scam.

[-] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago

I'm pretty sure that most of the time, you can't see them with the naked eye.

[-] AyuTsukasa@lemmy.zip 89 points 15 hours ago

Aren't the serving sizes intentionally small so they can get away with saying that stuff has less sugar?

[-] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 24 minutes ago

In the EU (probably in the rest of europe too) you must have a per 100 gram (you can have bullshit "portions" too if you want to, but the "per 100 gram" must be there).

How the hell do you americans compare different brands??

[-] The_v@lemmy.world 47 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

Smaller portion = less sugar, fat, salt, calories etc... If I remember correctly a few states have addressed making unrealistic portion sizes for the label as making misleading claims.

[-] DarkSirrush@piefed.ca 9 points 12 hours ago

Tic tacs have a serving size of less than a gram so they can claim 0g of sugar.

[-] Technoworcester@feddit.uk 5 points 10 hours ago

Only in America. Always thought that was a weird law.

[-] skvlp@feddit.nl 14 points 14 hours ago

Nutrients should always be listed in pr 100g or in percent (effectively the same).

[-] rants_unnecessarily@piefed.social 2 points 2 hours ago

As it is the in the EU

[-] Hawke@lemmy.world 15 points 15 hours ago

They are almost always 1 oz (28g).

But, individually packaged stuff does tend to pull bullshit like “1 serving=half a bottle of soda”

Peanut butter is probably going to be fine though

[-] phailhaus@piefed.social 6 points 14 hours ago

I saw a wrapped item that did the opposite, which was weird. It was a pack of 3 pieces and a serving was 4.

[-] Hawke@lemmy.world 9 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

Probably to hit some magic number:

Contains 10 g of protein per serving!!^*^

^*^Serving size 10 kg

[-] SippyCup@lemmy.world 5 points 12 hours ago
[-] Hawke@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

Depends on the quantity of parasites on the lettuce

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 1 points 9 hours ago

As someone who, if anything, wants to gain weight, this has the inverse effect for me. Peanut butter is great because it's so dense with calories. (I try to avoid sugar though, but I don't think peanut butter has much added sugar, but I'll have to check next time I have some.)

I know I'm in the minority though. I'm a 6ft tall man who weighs ~125-130lb. I was stuck at 120 for a decade or more, and only recently have put on a couple more pounds. I don't have an eating disorder or anything, but I just struggle to put on weight, so my serving sizes personally for peanut butter are way higher than average.

It's not me that's out of touch with reality, peanut butter jar.

[-] Trex202@lemmy.world 9 points 13 hours ago

I'm in touch with my peanut butter jar

This is the one of the top signs that we're living in a simulation.

[-] huppakee@lemmy.world 23 points 15 hours ago

You guys get multiple servings from a jar?

[-] Codpiece@feddit.uk 9 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

That’s a European serving. The rest of the jar is one Texan serving.

[-] lime@feddit.nu 12 points 14 hours ago

we don't even list serving sizes on our stuff, just nutrients per 100g so you can count it yourself

Given that the most typical use is spreading it on a slice of bread, I’ll argue, no I’m not out of touch, everyone else is. When the “serving size” can’t fill the expected use case, it’s not the consumer that’s wrong

[-] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

One slice is two servings, clearly.

[-] RamRabbit@lemmy.world 5 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

The trick is to use the back of the spoon to scoop it out! Makes spreading so much easier.
