I work in a law school. Last year we had a woman who was taking classes at 63 because it was "better engagement than the senior center," it was basically free, and she got a meal plan out of it to boot. While she didn't ultimately jive with the professors, she's now suing several of them, so she's still living her best life with the skills she just picked up. Bravo.

I moved to the opposite side of the world in my early 30s. It's totally doable.

Seeing as I'm losing my job and things in Japan aren't great, I'm considering going halfway back if I can make it happen. (Edit: now in my mid 40s for context)

My mom went to university at 30, passed the bar, became a lawyer, had beef with the provincial court, passed the bar in the next province over at 50 out of spite and commutes across the border to practice law in a different province.

She wants to help people navigate immigration court and represent them for free after she retires.

lol. I’m close to 29 and I haven’t even started yet. Been stuck since I got out of uni. Do what you want. These days anyways it’s not like you have the option not to have multiple careers anyways.

Community college is awesome because you'll get to take an African literature studies course with 17 year olds straight out of high school, and retired 50 year old construction workers who decided to come back to school. All in the same room.

Going a different direction later in life is absolutely not "starting over." Your life experience comes with you, and if you're even slightly self-aware, that will give you a leg up. I decided to go back to school for a specific career when I was 30 after working in retail management for awhile, and by 36, I was in management in that new career, which was directly attributable to my prior work and life experience. Everything you experience contributes to who you are

Friend of mine could afford to retire early at 55. Did much of nothing for a few years. Then one day, he decided to go back to school. He's now well on his way to a PhD in a completely unrelated field. He says it made him excited about life again.

It's both. "It's too late" for marketing yourself to capitalism. But it's never too late to better yourself for yourself

started comp science at 28ish. if you can tell a story around it its fine. but prepare to see ppl younger than u earn 2x ++ money, have a house, tesla and family while you struggle to pay repair fees for your 20yr old car.

The problem is if you are taking the advice of random internet strangers seriously for advice on complicated and highly subjective questions like that.

Do random internet strangers sometimes give good advice? Sure. But for these types of questions it's usually more by accident than anything.

you can do whatever you want--you just have to be willing to pay the price. even someone living check-to-check could go back to school if they were willing to work 20 hours a day and possibly live in their car.

....just at the hope of having a house in the suburbs lol.

here's my perspective as an old man: unless you have enough money to NOT WORK for the rest of your life or are on the track to retire much earlier than 65, you don't really have shit. at least nothing worth feeling superior about.

you do however have dreams and passions that could possibly be fulfilled despite your financial situation.

the person in the OPs story is just driven by justice and possibly revenge. but it's not as big a deal if you frame it like that.
