It'll be good, but it won't be as good as its hyped up to be, because even a game coded by an army of time-travelling future-messiahs from every conceivable dimension couldn't be as good as the hype suggests.

What you can look forward to is every single content creator even remotely related to digital entertainment talking about how its the best/worst thing ever, dissecting every single plotpoint, getting enraged/excited over every minor update, endless discussions over the price of the mtx that will generate more revenue than a mid-sized countries GDP.

Even if the game sucks by every objective metric, children and casuals will still throw money at it every chance it gets. The game has to be amazing for me to have any hope.

[-] raven55six@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

That'd be actually fun to see. I wonder what would be happening in gaming world in couple years with the hardware prices.

[-] ironpangolin29@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

It will be. The fans of gtaiv and gtav were children when those games came out. Their brains and personalities were in utero basically.

Grown ass men in their 40s will play gtavi and see how silly and profoundly lame the GTAverse is.

Genz and gen a will be nothing except offended by everything in the game. I have no doubt they're (rockstar) going to pander to the trans community to save a little face.

I'm certain the game will flop, especially because all their design time was proooobbbabbly, building the entire micro economy and microtransaction store that's going to be the centerpiece of the franchise going forward.

Pbbbbbbhhht. Stinker incoming.

they’re (rockstar) going to pander to the trans community to save a little face.

All trailers so far have shown nothing but swaggering toxic male bravado, and an "equal" (but let's be honest, she's second fiddle) female partner who is far from androgenous.

I think GenZ will hate the lack of inclusivity, as I think Rockstar is targeting conservatives as their main audience

[-] InFerNo@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 hours ago

Since it's an exaggerated mirror of society, it will have all elements of society. People analyze these things too much.

[-] thanksforreading@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 hour ago

*Since it was an exaggerated.....

[-] tetris11@feddit.uk 1 points 1 hour ago

you're probably right, but I have a feeling the social commentary side of Rockstar left when Dan Houser and Lazlo went, leaving what I suspect to just be the cruelty behind without the satire...

[-] Paradachshund@lemmy.today 25 points 5 hours ago

I think flop is impossible, but shitshow and disappointment? Now that seems pretty likely.

[-] devaly@ani.social 1 points 2 hours ago

It costed many billions to build, so it has to sell a lot to make a profit.

Some games are successful with millions in sale, but that won't be even close to GTA 6, so it can sell billions and still flop for them

[-] boonhet@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 hour ago

Hasnt it already sold like a billion in preorders though?

[-] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 20 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

I honestly hope somebody leaks it 2 weeks early for free and rockstar just lose a bunch of stock money.

All the people who made GTA 5 are long gone. The game isn't going to be edgy nor will it be pushing the envelope the way all their other games did. Its going to be safe and filled with inclusive dad jokes that suck the air out of the room... with character banter heavily inspired by wannabe MCU dialogue (which is also shit BTW but they emulate it because they want to be as successful as Marvel)

[-] craftrabbit@lemmy.zip 8 points 3 hours ago

Rockstar has historically been very good about making relatable characters with good dialogue in gripping stories. They took 5 years to make rdr 2, which turned out to be good and now another 8 years for gta 6.

It's definitely not a given that the game is gonna be good, but it might very well be a banger. Writing it off already is unfair, I think.

But still, don't fucking preorder games

[-] iocase@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 hours ago

Historically all the people I'm talking about made those games and are now gone, which is my point. I unfortunately don't have high hopes for their next game if their recent writing in GTA5 is any indication...

[-] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 5 points 5 hours ago

Please no, there's not been a decent one in forever, and people just are so hyped

[-] Porygon 6 points 5 hours ago

Nice username

[-] blockheadjt@sh.itjust.works 63 points 10 hours ago

Like CoD and sports games, they will sell well even if they're shit.

[-] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago

Consumerism is a sign of superiority in modern gaming culture.

[-] NuanceDemon@lemmy.world 5 points 6 hours ago

Like the end of saga marvel movies they won't release it until they are 110% confident in it's commercial success.

[-] SoloPhoenyx@lemmy.world 5 points 7 hours ago

Streamers are best friends with AAA devs. Streamers encourage this crap and play innocent/hostile when called out for it. Gamers are willing participants because they'll give them views on YT or bits on Twitch as a reward for supporting the very industry both parties bitch about.

It's one of the reasons I don't consider myself a gamer anymore.

[-] foxwolf@pawb.social 7 points 6 hours ago

Timmy Turner you dumbass, just wish for it. Praying? Really?

[-] JusticeForPorygon 7 points 5 hours ago

God is dead because Timmy Turner killed him

[-] happy_wheels 134 points 13 hours ago

The old Rockstar is dead. Ppl r gonna preorder GTA anyways and defend the company when they get a broken/unfinished product on day one, claiming it can be fixed in the future with updates. Look at cyberpunk 2077 and no mans land.

[-] nobodysreadingthis@quokk.au 8 points 6 hours ago

Except 2077 was fixed. This won't be.

[-] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 5 points 6 hours ago
[-] Jiral@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

I bought both late and enjoyed them both quite a bit. I would neither call best game ever but they were well worth the money at that point. Of course, it did not reach Witcher 3 in epic quality.

[-] TotallynotJessica 5 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

Games can definitely be fixed post launch. Fallout New Vegas was a broken mess, but now it's the most beloved 3D Fallout game and people don't even bring it up in this conversation. With enough ambition, quality, and room to improve underneath the technical issues, games can and have been brought back from from being beta releases.

On the other hand, Rockstar's schemes aren't guaranteed to pay off. RDR2 had a well received single player, but the online mode was an absolute failure compared to GTA Online. Given how people have less disposable income and advanced gaming hardware, GTA 6 might be too much too late. I doubt it'll be a flop, but I also doubt it'll have the success of GTA 5.

I also don't see it having the same relevance in a post culture war era. Even if it plays things relatively safe, it will still be seen as too woke by the right, and too capitalist coded by the left. The liberal center isn't an all encompassing hegemon like it once was, and that's really who the game is made for.

[-] blartcap_@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 9 hours ago

Look at two games that show games can indeed be fixed with updates?

There is this YouTuber that is like crazy for the game, always talking about it, saying that's going to be the best game of the world, that nothing could go bad, that Rockstar is like some kind of elves making ancient jewelry. I just want to see his completely breakdown if the game is shit.

[-] driving_crooner@lemmy.eco.br 6 points 7 hours ago

Remind me of the "pre-review" of Cyberpunk 2077, where Tim Rogers qualify CP77 as the best game not even released yet.

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
