Since I haven’t used AI/LLMs for much at all, the answers are yes without question.

If AI were banned I'd just go back to not being pressured into using something that is a mixed bag in terms of usefulness. Yesterday I used an LLM to try to clean up some tech debt in a codebase. The result is so many code changes that it feels like I should vet what strategies it employed and then once confirmed they are good strategies, make the changes myself in a cleaner and more surgical way. Which wouldn't use a fuckton of electricity like the LLM did. The way the LLM did things edited over 100 files and added tons of comments that won't matter 3 weeks from now. Reviewing all that feels like more work than if I did it myself. I guess I could just blindly trust it if I was an idiot. In the end it may have taught me a couple of things but it's unclear if this is worth it.

Lol, they completely over estimate how many people actually use AI I guess? I have used it like 3 or 4 times ever in 2 years. Im pretty sure I will be iust fine. I would much rather see RAM prices return to normal so everything else would be normal.
I used it intentionally right when chatgpt came out like twice. I thought it was a neat trick and show off of the advances im computer science and then never touched it again because its novelty ran its course.
However I do get the occassional annoying auto AI slop that google or whatever does which i actively then tell Ublock to block. I am so sick of this slop being shoved down our throats and into every stupid part of our lives. I wwas looking at appliances yesterday and saw AI powered fridges, fucking kill me.
I'd be 100% fine, and I'm a fucking systems analyst, a job where you'd think AI might actually be helpful.
But honestly, nope it's not. Even for basic data parsing and analysis, it takes more time for me to double check AIs work, understand what it's doing, then correct its mistakes than it would for me to just do it right the first time.
Let me put it another way; a job that takes me two hours on my own would probably take at least 3 hours if I had AI do it, when I factor in the proofing and corrections, plus there's the additional cost of the AI itself, so I have a hard time seeing how it will EVER be more cost efficient to use AI. Especially with ai prices keep going up, and its use raises overall energy prices for everyone.
It rarely saves time, and pretty much never saves money, so I'm kind of wondering what the point is, other than selling a pipe dream to dipshit boomer ceo's that don't understand basic math, but view employees as a wasted expense they want to get rid of

Ding ding ding! The latest memory crunch has been the nonvolatile type, ssds and hard drives, which have never been a bottleneck for ai companies. Training data and model size, while big, are comparatively small compared to the volatile memory needed to run thousands of models concurrently, or compared to a hypothetical hd mass surveillance and voter influence program.

Because you're doing this. The majority of people bull shit their job and made mistakes with confidence long before AI existed. What kept companies functional were the people like you that actually kept stuff functioning. Finding others mistakes, actually verifying information, etc.
Do what works best for you. I know that I can't bull shit jobs like a lot of other people. If I don't understand something, or if I put little effort into something, I get fucking bored. And when I'm bored my ADHD literally will not let me work. I can't even do the minimum and BS with AI or something. I literally can't respond to an email.
I wish I could be like most people and do the bare minimum and be confident. But, I can't.
It's why I hate my field and have left it now. They forced AI on software developers. Which worked for the code monkeys. It made them really efficient and spitting out spaghetti code. But, the people that wanted to maintain code and stability. We were basically thrown out in a lot of companies. We were slowing down "development". Some of them are still there and they are burned the fuck out trying to keep things afloat.
You're not wrong. But you're not the average person. The average person doesn't care about understanding something. They just pick the "best guess" on a multiple choice test of life and are fine with it.
The AI gives them a better chance of picking the right answer. They move on. They don't think about it again and don't care if it was correct or in understanding it.
And the companies, they are profiting from a bubble. They give zero shits about the product they sell. The entire economy is running like Elon Musk promising "the next big thing" every year for 10 years without delivering. It's all just financial speculation.
it's been said that reverse-engineering takes three times as long as writing it on your own. Yet everyone prefers reverse-engineering stupid ai answers instead of thinking for themselves. Make it make sense

Let me bring it further, how many humans could survive 1 week with no phone or Internet ? They probably have never looked something up in a book or gone to a library or wrote a check. Its good to keep all skills sharp and not rely so heavily on billionaire tech. When all this tech was coming into being I thought great, learn that and also learn the standard traditional ways as well. Seems folks forgot that, or they dont want to learn.
Shut down internet access on your typical 20 year old and see how that goes for them. Heck, age doesn't even matter. Do that to a 60 year old they'll still lose it.

I saw an article yesterday about reading being at record lows, especially reading for pleasure. Less than 50% of Americans said they read a book of any kind in 2025 iirc.
You're talking about phones and Internet, but to extend your thought a bit, checks don't work at the scale we run financial transactions anymore, they are scanned and recorded, then data about them is used for settlement, and they have been doing this for decades. But your point stands about phones and the Internet.

At my work, I am using a LLM preloaded with agents to the legalia related to a limited range of my specific lines of work.
I use them. Why and when? When I have to process huge amounts of text mass. Why? Because I have thousands of pages to sift through of various human written content and AI grifting shit.
Do I rely on the LLM answers? Do I ask it to tell me what people said? Do I ask it to tell me what to write or reply?
No. I fucking use them for text processing at the level of spell check, legal paragraphs (which are triple checked) or grammar control. And, as the pure fucking reasons I see LLM as useful: check if I missed anything from real peopling in the river of **** I have to deal with daily so that the signal isn’t lost in the noise.
Your grandma and baby cousin will be heard and replied to if they raise their voice.
What bugs me out are the people who try to use LLM:s to enworsen citizen participation.
My life, work and community without LLM:s will work better. The form we use them for today is so dystopian and horrible that we as public servants have to fence this shit in the way to fight for climate resilience and justice in order to in any way support our local communities and efforts.
Doesn't Word have spell check for decades? If you "triple check" your AI, aren't you just adding more work? If you only need a spell checker, get a spell checker. Having AI spend 20 times the processing power needed for that is still extremely inefficient.
At the level of spell check. Word, as it is, had always since the 90’s had a seriously spotty spell check in other languages than English. LLM:s might improve on grammar and wording, but facts are far beyond their reach.
Don’t confuse intelligence with word and grammar parsing.
We probably don't need to build multiple terabytes of data centers for a better spell checker.
