"I don't do politics"

So you don't buy groceries? Gas? Pay taxes? Own or want to own a home? Have a job? Have insurance?

[-] Virtvirt588@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

To be fair, this kind of behaviour is a product of constant indoctrination - always stowed away. A social science such as this should be introduced and taught in schools.

[-] MrMobius@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 day ago

When someone tells me they don't do politics I always answer: "I see… So you're a conservative then."

[-] FistingEnthusiast@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

I used to think that, but I have experienced a lot of it recently where they're not actually conservative bigots, they're just dumb

To the stupid, politics is scary and overwhelming, because they live in a small world of simple answers to complex problems

Often, this leads to conservative bigotry because social media etc. offers those simple answers

I live somewhere that is small, quiet, simple and beautiful

I have had to reassess my thoughts.

Yes: "I'm not political" does come from those who have privilege, but unlike 'Murica, when they have it explained how they benefit from others suffering, the usual response is (dare I say it...) something of an awakening

[-] HexesofVexes@lemmy.world 40 points 1 day ago

It can also translate to "I am too exhausted by continual political failures to engage with this".

Let's be honest a moment - capitalism sucks (it's really just feudalism with extra steps), communism doesn't really exist in the modern world (we have dictatorships masking as communism, real communism may never have existed), and the future looks to be solid dystopia. Revolution in all its forms gives birth to one of the two systems above.

All in all, engaging with politics these days feels rather like "we're fucked aren't we; but we could get them to use some lube; yes but we'd still fucked and people we like would be dead"

I'm from KY. Most people claim to be non-political but get super mad if you talk shit about Trump.

[-] FistingEnthusiast@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

Yeah, but that's Kentucky...

Which is an idiotic part of an idiotic country

It's really a case of stupid^2

[-] infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

That's when you point out that they care a lot about politics. Or I dunno, on second thought maybe don't make the right more politically aware than they already are.

[-] FistingEnthusiast@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago

I'd figure that they'd get immediately violent

[-] TheHound@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

While you've got the attention of the class: Holding a sign at a passive protest in an already liberal city is not political activism, it is virtue signalling. Go do voter engagement, phone banking, etc.

[-] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 44 points 1 day ago

I think most of the people who say this mean they don't want to talk about politics with you

[-] TotallynotJessica 27 points 1 day ago

Even in those circumstances, I wouldn't say that. The very concept of "not caring" about politics is so cringe that I wouldn't be caught dead endorsing it.

[-] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago

That may be part of the reason they don't want to talk politics.

[-] TotallynotJessica 8 points 1 day ago

Then viewing those people poorly was justified all along.

[-] OwOarchist@pawb.social 6 points 1 day ago

I wish our politics were good enough that I didn't have to care about it.

[-] terranoid@lemmy.cafe 28 points 1 day ago

Sometimes the translation is: "I know you're a rabid fucking tankie and I'd rather not get into an argument when I'm just trying to get through the fucking workday" or "you're clearly a basic bitch establishment democrat and you started blaming 'Bernie Bros' when Hillary lost and your politics disgust me" or so many other things, where I just know politics won't be a fun conversation for either of us

[-] MyBrainHurts@piefed.ca 3 points 1 day ago

I agree and disagree with so much there and love how we come out with the sane, depressingly correct answer

[-] Polisheocket@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

Pretty much my opinion, far left throwing their crazy ideas at, I’ll hard pass usually, sometimes I’ll take the bait

[-] Nonconfrontational@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago

The workers should own the means of production.

[-] DankDingleberry@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

or: i am too exhausted dealing with my own problems so that i cannot entertain everyone elses problems at the same time

[-] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

But then you can't complain once the state comes for you. Cause you did fuck all to help others.
Also you getting fucked is BECAUSE of the politics you choose to ignore.

[-] cockmushroom@reddthat.com 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

It's odd to suggest the state isn't already well after people who feel like that

[-] huppakee@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

That or, "life fucks me so hard i don't have energy to worry about someone else's."

[-] TotallynotJessica 11 points 1 day ago

Dang, if only caring about the oppression of others allowed you to team up to help each other. However, there's no way to help yourself; life will always fuck you this way and it's impossible for solidarity to change that /s

[-] Psionicsickness@reddthat.com 6 points 1 day ago

Yeah, tried that for a while. I live in the southern United States. All the other inmates love their chains. At least I have my solitude.

[-] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago

That exactly is still privilege. Others get fucked same as you AND have to deal with politics on top.

[-] A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

You have to be dumb to not see that some things will benefit yourself as well as others, or, that government & corpos make life worse for others as much as for you.

So I agree with OOP, if you see your income dwindle from just about enough to always slightly less than enough, you cannot afford to ignore politics.

And I mean just having an opinion & acting accordingly, not using already tight resources for ... activism? ... tbf I dunno what exactly they meant with "do politics".

[-] 9point6@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

I assume either privilege or genuine naivety/willful ignorance (based on age, if you're over 30 it's getting a bit late in the game to still just be naive)

We've got maybe a decade left to make some pretty big changes, and for 99% of us, our ability to do absolutely anything about it comes from engaging with politics.

Yes I know for some of you the world feels overwhelming enough and it feels like some things are too big for you to be able to care about. But that's by design, the world is this way to keep you from being able to engage in improving things. Political decisions can ruin your life whether you know about them or not.

All of our living situations are going to keep worsening unless enough of us resist, and every day that passes, resistance is made harder.

"I don't do politics" in 2026 is now equivalent to "I don't care that my life will get worse"

[-] Asfalttikyntaja@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 day ago

Or, maybe you are surrounded with a bunch of people who are all against your views and the only thing which will save you is pretending that you’re not doing politics?

[-] bitteroldcoot@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago

Having dealt with college interns when I was at work, you don’t have to be all that privileged to be clueless. I worked for the army, we were at war with Iran and Afghanistan and Iraq at the time. The interns didn’t know where either country was, nor did they care.

These weren’t kids from rich families. Mostly they were straight off the farm.

[-] InvalidName2@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Also bad: "I don't watch/read the news anymore. So I vote for who my hea(R)t tells me."

[-] MyBrainHurts@piefed.ca 3 points 1 day ago

Unless we're talking about the people who make my clothes. Then, I don't do politics/ethics.

But shitposting online? Then obviously, I'm about politics and you should be too!

[-] patruelis@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Neah, i dont do politics. I just don't have any time for bs. Leave home at 6am get home at 11pm. Same over the weekends. Fuck politics.

[-] takeda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 39 points 1 day ago

Yahh... you having to work two shifts might actually have a lot to do with politics.

You might not do politics, but politics definitely does you.

[-] bstix@feddit.dk 6 points 1 day ago

Why are you living your life like that?

[-] patruelis@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

Because I have a very active fulfilling life. I dont want TV or the news. I last movie I watched was about 10 years ago.

[-] bstix@feddit.dk 2 points 1 day ago

I guess you're lucky if you feel that your time is well spend only doing work and sleep.

Are you self employed by any chance, or simply enjoying doing what you do?

[-] patruelis@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago

No, employed like any other person.

But outside work Im a volunteer firefighter, teach soccer to kids, do a lot if hiking with the local group, swimming at the local club, volunteer for scouts, volunteer for other big organisations. This keeps me very busy and anchored in reality, no time for bs in my life.

If something does not bring me joy, I will not do it, life is too short for that.

[-] OwOarchist@pawb.social 6 points 1 day ago

Because he's getting fucked over by the politics he doesn't care about.

[-] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago

Privileged to be an idiot I guess.

[-] TheMuffinMan@piefed.world 3 points 1 day ago

A good, hard hitting question.

OC, life can be happier and more fulfilling. Find your tribe!

[-] Nonconfrontational@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

Why do you think your life is so hard, lmao?

[-] patruelis@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

I have a very fun life and I want to keep it that way lol.

[-] Zephyr@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

People being more engaged could be a good thing, it can also be a bad thing.
