Hey, sorry for a negative post in this community.

Tim Hortons (it's a fast food brand quite popular in Canada for those who're confused) is partnering up with the Harry Potter IP to launch Harry Potter themed products for some time.

JK Rowling, who's a massive massive transphobe and who has caused a lot of pain to our trans friends earns quite a lot of money from the IP. Every penny you spend on this IP directly contributes to her financial growth.

Please boycott Tim Hortons (at least for the duration of this event if not forever).

Trans rights are human rights, and fuck all individuals and institutions that violate/promote violation of human rights.

I mean, I was boycotting them already but I'll boycott them harder.

[-] BurgerBaron@quokk.au 6 points 3 weeks ago

I wasn't boycotting them, I just rather eat the gravel in their parking lot than their stale bagels.

[-] cloudskater@piefed.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 weeks ago

What were you boycotting them for already? Not saying your wrong, fuck brands and shit, but I'm curious.

[-] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 22 points 3 weeks ago

Well, bad food and shitty coffee lol. But actually, they were bought out by an American company years ago (taco bell I think?) and keep portraying themselves as this great Canadian company. It's just gross and I try not to purchase from shitty companies.

Also, as a general rule because I am lucky enough to live in a town full of great coffee shops, I just prefer local.

[-] cloudskater@piefed.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah all that is true. Their Canadian stuff pissed me off years ago, and I'm not at all shocked that they're actually american.

They merged with burger king and remained Canadian. So its actually the other way around.

Meh, it's debatable but I IMO if it's majority foreign owned, it's not canadian. Looking more into it as I hadn't read about it in a while:

The company's headquarters are in Toronto, but 3G Capital [Brazilian company] remains the biggest player with a 32% stake, meaning major decisions are influenced from beyond Canada's borders. Src

Either way I just don't care for nationalism, so I should have clarified: I don't want shitty coffee just because it claims to be Canadian. I'm annoyed that they use nationalism as a part of their branding and it's pretty much the only thing that has held them up as their quality has gotten worse and worse in the last 20 or 30 years.

My mom worked at Tim's when I was a kid, they made everything in house and fresh. I worked at Tim's as a teenager, we made some stuff in house but mostly it came frozen and we reheated it in essentially giant microwaves. As I was leaving, even the muffins (which were the last of the 'fresh' items) were being switched to frozen garbage.

Then there was the whole thing with them losing their coffee contracts to McD's - so McDonald's actually had the better tasting Tim's coffee and Tim Horton's coffee got truly shit.

Idk sorry about the rant, I just truly do not see the value in that company.

One time I was walking past Krispy Kreme, and I wanted a donut. So I looked in, and saw they were running a Harry Potter promotion. I went in and complained to the cashier that those promo signs are inappropriate, because Harry Potter is racist. The cashier gave Me a free donut.

[-] isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca 13 points 3 weeks ago

And everyone clapped!

(I do believe you, I just think this snarky remark would be funny)

[-] athatet@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 weeks ago

So it worked. You’re now in here advertising for the company.

[-] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

Nah, fuck Krispy Kreme. I hope they go bankrupt. I'm out here advertising the cute donut cashier with purple hair.

[-] modcolocko 2 points 2 weeks ago

unfortunately this had the effect of making me want a krispy kreme donut

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 weeks ago

The cashier gave Me a free donut.

donutus freeziosa!

[-] SCmSTR 1 points 3 weeks ago

I'm pretty sure free donuts is like kk's thing to get you to like them.

[-] snoons@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 weeks ago

I'll make a sign and stand outside one, at least to try to make sure people are informed.

[-] KingThrillgore@lemmy.ml 5 points 3 weeks ago

I'll do you one even better. Timmy's has been on my shitlist since I went there and had, no question, the worst coffee in my life. This is what Canadians say is so great?

[-] NotSteve_@lemmy.ca 11 points 3 weeks ago

This is what Canadians say is so great?

No, most of us hate it too. They just spend an insane amount of money on marketing themselves as all-Canadian which is funny considering they're not even a Canadian company anymore.

[-] luciole@beehaw.org 5 points 3 weeks ago

No, we don't.

[-] koncertejo@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 weeks ago

We don't like it either

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 weeks ago

Tim Horton's people dilute the shit coffee with dairy and sugar to kill the taste. It's coffee for people who hate coffee.

[-] PotatoesFall@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 3 weeks ago

All the Canadians I know also said that their donuts have gone to shit a few years ago

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 weeks ago

But the franchises are everywhere and those fucking red cups are everywhere,

[-] Mycatiskai@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 weeks ago

I already boycott it so much that I don't even use the 2 or 3 gift cards sitting in my junk drawer still full as when they were given to me.

[-] JamesBoeing737MAX@sopuli.xyz 5 points 3 weeks ago

Use them. They earn even more money if you don't. But don't spend anything more.

[-] Mycatiskai@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 weeks ago

The problem with using them is the food is such absolute garbage that indont want to eat it. I used to use them to buy donuts for work but I haven't had a crew of people that I work with to get them for.

Soon I'm starting a new job and there will be a team of guys that I'll be supervising and I will bribe them with treats to get on their good side.

[-] Shanoa 1 points 3 weeks ago

I already heavily avoid buying from there, but now I have good reason to never set foot in one again. Thanks for the heads up! blobcat, salute

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
