Been a long time gone, Constantinople. Why did Constantinople get the works?

[-] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 33 points 3 weeks ago

No, I'm not aware of this at all

Maybe he can name lickspittles trumpies

Now I'm even more lost! But I really enjoyed hearing these words in my inner reading voice.

What's interesting is that the name "Istanbul" is still Greek.

it developed in Turkish 16c. as a corruption of Greek phrase eis tan (ten) polin "in (or to) the city," which is how the local Greek population referred to it.

[-] BaroqBard@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

NEEEEEERD!

.... actually I was rolling into the comments to say the same thing. Right on brother

[-] toynbee@piefed.social 16 points 3 weeks ago

Someone should talk to TMBG about this.

[-] DokPsy@lemmy.world 17 points 3 weeks ago

They very clearly stated it was nobodies business but the Turks

[-] toynbee@piefed.social 5 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, but it seemed like they didn't really understand the reasoning behind it, so perhaps someone more authoritative should be consulted.

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 weeks ago

They'll be waiting in Istanbul.

[-] SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 weeks ago
[-] Tartas1995@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 3 weeks ago

Kinda bad comparison.

Beijing was always* beijing. Peking was just a european fever dream.

On the other hand

Constantinople was the offical name and got later renamed Istanbul.

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 weeks ago

~~Peking Duck~~ Beijing Duck

~~Chicken Kiev~~ Chicken Kyiv

[-] ytg@sopuli.xyz 1 points 3 weeks ago

The university is still named that way

[-] kuiskaaja@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 weeks ago

in finnish it's still "peking"

[-] SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 weeks ago

Same in Czech

[-] wraekscadu@vargar.org 3 points 3 weeks ago

Ehhh naming stuff after individuals just sounds very icky to me

[-] mathemachristian 3 points 3 weeks ago

You can take your devs vult and shove it where the sun don't shine. You've shamelessly even named yourself after a colonizer that basically started the british mandate of palestine. Your kind has done unspeakable things in west asia and you will be remembered by history as people that were rotten to the core. Future generations will be baffled as to how humans could come to the stuff that your kind did.
