I can't stand these USBC cords and now these USBC flash drives are a thing. They end up being a 2-n-1 or you gotta buy ANOTHER adapter for the USBC or whatever needs to be attach to it in order to work. Its just more money for extra work. 😮‍💨😑😑😑

Idk, but I'm upvoting both of you

[-] yucandu@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

alright that's how I'm renaming all my vbuses in Kicad including the silkscreen from now on

i found a power adapter in my closet last week that had it's barrel jack cut off and instead had two wires exposed and had "works for fans" labeled on it lol... no idea why I did that

[-] ignotum@lemmy.world 29 points 1 week ago

You probably did it to make it work with fans or something idk

[-] isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca 4 points 5 days ago

OnlyFans? NotComputers?

[-] xylol@leminal.space 9 points 1 week ago

But why make fans work is the real question

[-] ignotum@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Damn that's deep

Almost as deep as my love for things that make fan work

[-] LordAmplifier@pawb.social 5 points 1 week ago

That's kinda what I did to use a computer fan as a normal fan. I got one of these power adapters that let you pick a voltage, cut off the plug at the end of the cable, cut off the plug on the fan's cable, and connected the two. Maybe that's a dumb way to do it, but it's about as expensive and definitely quieter than getting a proper fan to blow air at my plants so their stems and branches grow strong

This is literally what PD triggers do. They negotiate high power in place of the device, and dump it on Vbus without checking

Powering a device that's designed for a simple barrel jack or 12V battery from a type-c power supply.

Most trigger devices I've seen have barrel jacks or positive and negative terminals as their output, so they don't technically dump high voltage on Vbus, the output side isn't USB.

I've seen a lot that are targeted to misbehaving devices, or proprietary charging standards.

For example, you have a charger with Qualcomm's old fast charge, and a phone with Samsung's, so you use a trigger to negotiate the Qualcomm's setting equivalent to Samsung's and you get fastcharge.

There's also stuff like fnirsi's usb tester, which can trigger fast charge for (you guessed it) testing.

I have an obscure piece of hardware that refuses to negotiate the required power from a power bank I know can handle it. Can I fix it with a lil board like this?!

Depends on the decide and the power bank?? (why are we vagueposting?)

[-] FellowEnt@sh.itjust.works 3 points 6 days ago

I just didn't know this is was a thing, the device is a Pine II controller from Black Forest Motion, which should take 10–24V DC via USBC. Power bank is capable of 12V but doesn't seem to want to negotiate.

[-] edinbruh@feddit.it 2 points 6 days ago

Maybe your controller supports only 10 or 24 and not 12 🤷. I'm not sure if that's a thing.

[-] FellowEnt@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago

Nah it's definitely flexible as it works fine with 12DC power brick, 3-4S LIPOs, just this issue with the USBC...

[-] edinbruh@feddit.it 2 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Maybe it's not running at 12v, but at 5v with higher current, which you can also do. The extreme example of this is the raspberry pi 5, which doesn't have room for voltage regulation, so when it needs extra power, it tries to negotiate 5v at 5.3A (it's a lot).

You can try using an app like "ampere", but that will likely always read 5v because the phone reads the voltage after it's gone through the regulator. You would need an usb tester to know what's actually happening.

It lets you replace a wall wart with USB-C. I have a Bluetooth speaker which uses a 20 volt 2 amp wall plug which is fucking massive and eats up enough space for at least 3 outlets, regardless of the orientation of the plug. Now it's just USB-C powered thanks to a $2 little circuit board, so I can use anything which outputs 20 volts. If I'm so inclined, I can even hook it up to a USB battery bank.

I fukken love me a good USB PD trigger board.

  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
